Jacob Burckhardt e Aby Warburg: da arte à civilização italiana do Renascimento
Between the works of Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897) and Aby Warburg (1866-1929) there are intricate relationships that, examined closely, can illuminate the historiography generated by the Italian art of the Renaissance. This essay looks at the point of contact between the two authors by comparing Burckhardt’s later texts and Warburg’s earlier ones.Between the works of Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897) and Aby Warburg (1866-1929) there are intricate relationships that, examined closely, can illuminate the historiography generated by the Italian art of the Renaissance. Deep sclerectomy versus trabeculectomy: a morphological study with anterior segment optical coherence tomography
PurposeTo investigate the intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering mechanisms of deep sclerectomy (DS) with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).MethodsIn a prospective cross-sectional study, AS-OCT parameters were compared between DS, trabeculectomy and control cases. Association with IOP and success (IOP?16?mm?Hg without medication) was investigated.Results18 DS (15 patients), 17 trabeculectomy (16 patients) and 15 controls (15 patients) were examined. Successful had a taller intrascleral lake (IL) and thicker conjunctival/Tenon's layer (CTL) than non-successful cases (513.3 vs 361.1?µm, p=0.027 and 586.7 vs 251.1?µm, p<0.001, respectively). CTL thickness correlated with IOP (r=?0.6407, p=0.004). CTL thickness was significantly different between controls, DS and trabeculectomy (mean (SD): 203.3 (62.6) vs 418.9 (261.9) vs 604.1 (220.7)?µm, p<0.0001). Successful trabeculectomy cases had a taller bleb cavity (BC) than non-successful cases (607.5 vs 176.7?µm, p=0.041). CTL microcysts were detected in 50% of DS and 52.9% of trabeculectomy cases (p=1).ConclusionsTrans-conjunctival aqueous percolation was identified as a novel DS drainage route. DS had a fluid reservoir below the scleral flap, the IL, in analogy to the trabeculectomy BC. A postoperative tall IL and a thick CTL were associated with good outcome
Czy aby Maciej mi przytaknie? O statusie aby w pytaniach rozstrzygnięcia
The subject-matter of this article is the status of the expression aby in the semantic structure of yes/no questions. Two possible solutions to the problem emerge from available lexicographic approaches: in some dictionaries the word aby is considered to be an inseparable part of an idiomatic interrogative form, while in others it is described as a bilateral, semantically independent unit of language. The author shows that in the past the word in question was a particle having a very wide range of use. In contemporary Polish its distribution is restricted to volitional contexts, but it still satisfies the condition of proportionality; therefore it should be interpreted as a lexical unit of Polish. The subject-matter of this article is the status of the expression aby in the semantic structure of yes/no questions. IMAGEM, ARTE E PATHOSFORMEL EM ABY WARBURG
This article addresses the ideas on image, art, and Pathosformeln in Aby Warburg’s studies, observing that these concepts are mixed in most of his work, whose amplitude extends to his written works, his library, and his Atlas of images. We think that this mix is crucial in his interdisciplinary historical-artistic research approach, investigating various visual supports as testimonies of men in time. Warburg advocated the thematic, spatial, and methodological extension of ‘our art science’ and resumed Jacob Burckhardt’s tradition of communion between Art History and Culture History. In the wake of details that revealed coexistences, contradictions, and ‘inverted meanings’ of recurring and reactive traditions at the same space-time, he broke with the West and East barriers and reinterpreted the notions of classical, ancient, and Renaissance itself. In an interdisciplinary research key that considers art in its context, he went further with his proposal of a cultural science and the “task of considering a work of art not only as a mirror of historical life, but also as a means of orientation in the celestial cosmos.”(WARBURG, Aby. O legado do antigo. Escritos inéditos. Campinas, SP: Ed. Aproximações entre a “atividade fenomenológica” de Gilda de Mello e Souzae o “método” de Aby Warburg / Approximations between the “phenomenological activity” of Gilda de Mello e Souza and the “method” of Aby Warburg
We argue that, in opposition to the strictly formalist analysis of images, both intellectuals point in their analysis to a rescue of social life for the understanding of art, long as advocated by the Swiss art historian Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897).Keywords: Gilda de Mello e Souza. The five Biblical compendia of Johann Jacob Schmidt
Johann Jacob Schmidt, a pastor in eighteenth century Pomerania, was an author of five Biblical compendia intended as a help for a detailed study of the Bible. With the focus of the Holy Land, Schmidt provided in these compendia detailed description of the geography, history, customs, and natural knowledge including astronomy and medicine of Biblical times to show the veracity of the Bible and its relevance to any reader of any time, particularly in spiritual matters.Johann Jacob Schmidt, im 18. Obtuse, Flitting by, and Nevertheless There – Image Archives in Practice
Over the past thirty years, the status of the archive as well as the state of what we call “documentary” have dominated discussions in and around photography. Although it is now commonplace to presume the objectifying gesture of documentary photography, the complex question of how, as a working artist/photographer, to approach the archive has not yet been adequately addressed. The purpose of this research is to raise questions about how, after the critique of the documentary image, the artist/photographer addresses, indeed, finds the archive. I am starting with the assumption that the archive is not only a place of storage but also a place of production, where our relation to the past is materialised and where our present writes itself into the future; thus, accordingly, I understand the archive as a place of negotiation and writing.
After the problems of the archive have been identified theoretically, the practice in the archive still encounters challenges and contradictions. This project explores those difficulties that remain within the practice in and around the archive, even after the critique has been stated. It is not about simply extending the critique, but finding an archive and the practice with it.
I am approaching these questions as a practitioner. As an artist and photographer, I am concerned with two practices in relation to archives: working with existing archives, and making work that will itself be archived. The point raised by those two activities is not to find or create another institutional archive per se, but to develop an archival practice in which the set of problems that the archives produce is in fact part of the process one engages in. Hence the work is a theoretical and practical set of experiments that may never be complete and conclusive
Imagens. Aby Warburg. Pós-vida das imagens. Imersão em grupos indígenas. Anthropology and surviving imagein the work of Aby WarburgAbstract This article seeks to consider the anthropological studies relevance for the warburguiana proposal of afterlife or survival of the images. The Warburg immersion in human groups and different periods of history analysis are going to constitute the crux of the proposed study. Taking into account the bibliographical research and the assumption that images are important anthropological and cultural documents, for this work will be taken into consideration the theory proposed by the cited author, that there are certain pictorial elements that recur throughout history. This fact will be recorded by him from anthropological studies of images made between and about and on the Hopi and Pueblo indians, in a period in which he lived among them. Such considerations allow us to evaluate the clear influences and consequences provided by the anthropology visual in the works of Aby Warburg. Keywords: Anthropology. Images. Aby Warburg.
