Flat tree-level inflationary potentials in the light of cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data

    No full text
We use cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data to test a broad and physically well-motivated class of inflationary models: those with flat tree-level potentials (typical in supersymmetry). The non-trivial features of the potential arise from radiative corrections which give a simple logarithmic dependence on the inflaton field, making the models very predictive. We also consider a modified scenario with new physics beyond a certain high-energy cut-off showing up as non-renormalizable operators (NRO) in the inflaton field. We find that both kinds of models fit remarkably well CMB and LSS data, with very few free parameters. Besides, a large part of these models naturally predict a reasonable number of e-folds. A robust feature of these scenarios is the smallness of tensor perturbations (r < 10^{-3}). The NRO case can give a sizeable running of the spectral index while achieving a sufficient number of e-folds. We use Bayesian model comparison tools to assess the relative performance of the models. We believe that these scenarios can be considered as a standard physical class of inflationary models, on a similar footing with monomial potentials

Modelling bonding failure effects in deteriorated concrete elements of bridges

    No full text
Nowadays, the seismic study of corroded reinforced concrete elements is a matter of increasing concern, in particular as regards links such as bridges in infrastructural networks. As the first step in an ongoing research, a prestressed concrete bridge overpass (continuous two spans with one central pier between the bents) was selected to perform response spectrum seismic analyses considering corrosion degradation. This was based on the development of a finite element model of the structure and allowed the assessment of the degrading seismic capacity of the reinforced concrete bridge pier at different periods caused by general and pitting corrosion. For this purpose, corrosion models from existing literature were used. An unchecked factor of this first research step is that corrosion can also affect bonding between the longitudinal reinforcing bars and concrete, thus increasingly reducing ductility and safety performance. Moreover, in a corroded structure bond strength and confinement capacity can also decrease due to the transverse reinforcement area loss, and concrete cover cracking and spalling. The new step developed in this work focuses on the bonding failure effects due to corrosion processes and how this affects the seismic performance of the deteriorated pier. The analysis is based on the introduction and validation of an empirical model for the assessment of the remaining bonding in corroded concrete elements with respect to experimental results

Bridge damage assessment under traffic and environmental variability: A case study on Yonghe cable-stayed bridge

    No full text
Bridges are essential components of civil infrastructure that must operate safely and reliably. Traditional methods for assessing structural health rely on the concept that changes in a structure's dynamic response may indicate potential damage. However, variations due to operational and environmental factors (like traffic and temperature) can also contribute to these changes. This makes damage detection more challenging, as a bridge may still be safe while exhibiting changes in its dynamic response due to these factors. If these effects are not properly accounted for, it could lead to false positive alerts. This article proposes a methodology for detecting and localizing damage in bridges subjected to traffic loads and environmental variability. Acceleration signals from accelerometers placed on the deck of a cable-stayed bridge in China were analyzed as part of a real monitoring effort. This data bank enabled the implementation of the algorithm on real signals in both undamaged and damaged scenarios. Variational Mode Decomposition is used to decompose the signal into Intrinsic Mode Functions. The Hilbert Transform is then employed to extract instantaneous frequencies, which represent damage-sensitive features in this context. Furthermore, environmental effects are removed from the damage-sensitive features using Principal Component Analysis. Finally, damage detection and localization are achieved using a statistical analysis able to confirm the previous data processing. An unsupervised clustering algorithm (K-means) is used to detect changes between the undamaged state and the damaged one. The results demonstrate the method's effectiveness when applied to real-world scenarios, suggesting its potential application in structural health monitoring

Bond deterioration effects on corroded RC bridge pier in seismic zone

The effects of corrosion focusing on the consequences of bond strength deterioration for a reinforced concrete bridge pier in a seismic affected area are examined in this research. A bond degradation model based on the local bond stress-slip model presented in FIB Model Code 2010 is chosen. A motorway overpass object of a previous study, which considered the rebars cross-section reduction effect only, has been selected to assess the seismic capacity of the corroded pier in the time domain when bond degradation due to corrosion is also taken into account. The modification of strength capacity and ductility of the structural element is analyzed and the effect of corrosion during the whole service life of the structure is obtained. It is concluded that the effect of bond degradation is more critical for the safety of the pier than the effect of rebars cross-section loss

On The Selection Of The State Space In Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics

    No full text
We address here the question of the choice and interpretation of state variables in the thermodynamical description of systems arbitrarily away from equilibrium. It is presented a discussion of the topic in the framework of informational statistical thermodynamics, an approach based on Gibbs algorithm for nonequilibrium dissipative systems, which provides mechano-statistical foundations to phenomenological theories of irreversible thermodynamics. The theory is applied in the case of a particular system consisting of the mobile carriers in a highly excited photo-injected plasma in semiconductors. The concepts and results thus obtained are tested against experimental data in time-resolved and time-integrated optical laser spectroscopy. It is shown how nonequilibrium thermodynamic variables are evidenced and measured in such experiments. It is also discussed the influence on them of the inclusion of dissipative fluxes among the basic variables.2481-2111137De Groot, S.R., Mazur, P., (1970) Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics, , North Holland, AmsterdamGlansdorff, P., Prigogine, I., (1971) Thermodynamics of Structure, Stability, and Fluctuations, , Wiley-Interscience, New YorkNicolis, G., Prigogine, I., (1977) Self-organization in Nonequilibrium Systems, , Wiley-Interscience, New YorkTruesdell, C., (1969) Rational Thermodynamics, , McGraw-Hill, New York 2nd enlarged ed., Springer, New YorkMuller, E.G.I., Ruggieri, T., (1993) Extended Thermodynamics, , Springer, BerlinJou, D., Casas-Vázquez, J., Lebon, G., (1988) Rep.
