    Reading Indonesian and Malaysian Young Adult Novels: Capturing the Image of Young Muslim Women in Indonesia and Malaysia

    A number of novel remaja, which mean young adult novels, written by women writers from Indonesia and Malaysia have been published. Writing competitions held by book publishers and language centers have also encouraged the production of the novels. However, since they address youth as their readers and tend to consider the characters, issues, language, and values that appeal to the modern young adult; therefore, some critics say that the novels only respond to the demands of the reader market and they are less creative and lack of quality. In this paper I demonstrate the value of Indonesian and Malaysian novel remaja by examining four novels which are Siti Zaleha M. Hashim’s Biarkan Kupu-Kupu Terbang (“Let the Butterfly Fly”), Rumah Cinta Kelana (“The Love House of Kelana”), written by Sofie Dewayani, Nisah Haron’s Mencari Locus Standi (“Finding the Defense Locus”), and Jadilah Purnamaku Ning written by Khilma Anis. I argue that those novels do not only explore young adults’ feelings, including romance, fear, sadness, happiness, and challenges, but they also describe important themes which may inspire young readers, such as how young Muslim women deal with their identity formation, living in a single mother family, and polygamy. Novel-novel remaja karya penulis perempuan banyak diterbitkan di Indonesia dan Malaysia. Lomba menulis yang diadakan oleh penerbit buku dan pusat bahasa juga mendorong banyaknya produksi novel-novel tersebut. Namun, karena novel remaja menyasar remaja sebagai pembacanya, novel tersebut ditulis dengan mempertimbangkan karakter, isu, bahasa, dan nilai-nilai yang menarik bagi remaja modern. Sehingga, beberapa kritikus mengatakan bahwa novel remaja hanya menjawab tuntutan pasar pembaca dan kurang kreatif serta berkualitas. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan nilai positif novel remaja yang terbit di Indonesia dan Malaysia dengan menelaah empat novel. Yaitu, Biarkan Kupu-Kupu Terbang karya Siti Zaleha M. Hashim, Rumah Cinta Kelana yang ditulis oleh Sofie Dewayani, Mencari Locus Standi karya Nisah Haron, dan Jadilah Purnamaku Ning ­yang ditulis oleh Khilma Anis. Saya berpendapat bahwa novel-novel tersebut tidak hanya mengeksplorasi perasaan remaja, termasuk percintaan, ketakutan, kesedihan, kebahagiaan, dan tantangan hidup, tetapi juga menggambarkan tema-tema penting yang dapat menginspirasi pembaca remaja. Misalnya, tema tentang bagaimana remaja Muslim perempuan menjalani proses pembentukan jati diri, hidup bersama keluarga dengan ibu tunggal, dan poligami, bahkan juga mengkritisi ketimpangan posisi perempuan di dalam masyarakat

    Young Women Writers from the Pesantren Tradition:\ud Self Initiative, Learning Environment, and the Education System

    The emergence of a new generation of women writers from the pesantren tradition is an interesting issue in the landscape of Indonesian Islam. Especially, after for a long time, the authorship in the pesantren tradition has been dominated by men. This paper provides a brief description of the writing tradition in the pesantren. It examines how the writing tradition has been developed by the students. It also describes the extent to which women are involved in the writing tradition of pesantren and explores some differences between older generations and the new generation. The paper argues that the most influential factor in the writing achievement among young women writers is self-esteem and learning environments including family and pesantren. Self-esteem is partly developed in a learning environment in which the writers can sharpen their writing skills, strengthen their identities, and broaden their minds. The education system in the pesantren can offer valuable programs to support for this career development.</p

    Print Media and Cultural Identity of Santri: Responses of the Pesantren's Young Leaders in Indonesia

    The development of Islamic print media that targets youth as readers has challenged pesantren for selecting appropriate reading materials for students according to its values and tradition. This paper aims to examine the dynamics life of pesantren as fortress for the defense of the Islamic community in dealing with influences coming from outside of pesantren. Analyzing the responses of young leaders of pesantren to print media (books, novels, and magazines) containing Islamic values and symbols, and targeting Muslim teenagers as their readers and consumers, with focusing on how these media might influence the establishment of the cultural identity of santri. My paper will answer two main questions: how do the young pesantren leaders respond on the emergence of many novels and magazines that come into the pesantren? What are the rules and regulations they introduce to preserve the cultural identity of santri? In dealing with the challenge of print media, most of the pesantren where these young pesantren leaders live have an exception regarding book materials as an attempt to form and protect the cultural identity of santri.</jats:p

    Competing Identity and Culture: The Formation of Forum Lingkar Pena and Komunitas Matapena in Indonesia

    This study focusses on the genealogy of the Forum Lingkar Pena and Komunitas Matapena movements, which have produced novel Islam remaja (Islamic youth novels) and novel pop pesantren (pesantren popular novels). Using Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, I analyze the field where Forum Lingkar Pena and Komunitas Matapena discourses are disseminated, particularly among Muslim youth in Indonesia and how Islamic popular culture is represented through these novels and the dynamic of Muslim youth community in struggling for meaning in the Indonesian literary field in general. This research found that establishment of FLP and Komunitas Matapena can be described through three main ideas. Firstly, these communities encountered the massiveness of popular culture by offering a medium that supports identity formation for Muslim youth. Secondly, there is a link between the idealism promoted by Muslim organization movements and the establishment of FLP and Komunitas Matapena, and this link determines their forms and cultural products.     The new global genres of "chick lit" and "teen lit" in the early twenty-first century led to the rise of a new generation of Muslim women writers in Indonesia. They gained public attention, particularly from teen readers, by publishing Islamic novels and popular pesantren (Islamic boarding school) novels. Focusing on two online platforms for digital literature, the Komunitas Bisa Menulis and Halaqah 1001 Aksara as case studies, this study employs online observation of the platforms, content analysis of the works, and interviews with three young Muslim women writers from the pesantren tradition to explore their experiences of embracing socio-religious changes and technological developments in Indonesia. The article aims to answer three questions. Firstly, how and why do Muslim women writers from the pesantren tradition choose to publish their works on online platforms? Secondly, what are the predominant themes, genres and ideological messages present in their writing? And finally, to what extent do these platforms benefit women in developing their professionalism

    Problematika Pembelajaran PAI di SMA Darul Hijrah Puteri Martapura : (Studi Kasus pada Pembelajaran Materi Fiqh Ibadah)

    Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI) memiliki peran penting dalam membentuk karakter dan pemahaman keagamaan peserta didik. Namun, di SMA Darul Hijrah Puteri Martapura, pembelajaran PAI, khususnya pada materi Fiqh Ibadah, menghadapi berbagai problematika. Kendala utama yang ditemukan meliputi keterbatasan fasilitas pembelajaran berbasis teknologi, metode pengajaran yang masih didominasi oleh ceramah dan hafalan, hal ini dikarenakan Fiqh Ibadah itu dalam proses mengamalkan dan memahami. Jadi, sebagai bentuk dari pembelajaran Fiqh Ibadah yang motivasinya pada siswa masih rendah. Selain itu, di pondok pesantren jadwal mengenai pembelajaran PAI ini tidak dikhususkan karena sudah masuk pada materi pelajaran yang lain, contoh pelajaran tentang tauhid, akidah, fiqh ibadah, dan sejarah. Maka secara garis besar, PAI yang dimaksud ini berbagai kumpulan tujuan untuk memberikan pembelajaran agama Islam, karena SMA Darul Hijrah berkiblat pada pendidikan nasional. SMA Darul Hijrah tidak tertuju pada satu fiqh ibadah saja karena pembelajaran PAI masih dikatakan secara umum jika berkiblat pada pendidikan nasional sementara dalam ruang lingkup PAI di Madrasah sangat beda per mata pelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi yang melibatkan guru PAI, kepala sekolah, serta siswa sebagai subjek penelitian. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan model interaktif Miles dan Huberman, yang mencakup reduksi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan kesimpulan untuk memperoleh gambaran yang komprehensif mengenai permasalahan yang diteliti. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa problematika utama dalam pembelajaran Fiqh Ibadah meliputi kurangnya metode pembelajaran inovatif, keterbatasan media pembelajaran, serta asesmen yang belum sepenuhnya mengakomodasi aspek afektif, kognitif dan psikomotorik siswa. Untuk mengatasi hal tersebut, disarankan penerapan metode pembelajaran berbasis proyek dan diskusi kelompok, pemanfaatan media digital secara terbatas dan terkontrol, serta peningkatan kompetensi guru dalam menyusun strategi pembelajaran yang lebih interaktif
