    No full text
Event Description What can histories of modern Black media arts teach us about human expressive cultures and the importance of peaceful coexistence? How has art and media served as an instrument of response to the calamities of conflict and as means to articulate strategies of resolution, reconciliation, and solidarity? This presentation explores this topic by examining how Dr. Maya Angelou\u27s philosophical insights about peace and love, and scholar Saidiyah Hartman’s critical interventions within legal studies and archival studies, have been taken up in the work of Black media-makers and artists. Speaker’s Bio: Robeson Taj Frazier is an associate professor of communication in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. He is the director of doctoral studies and director of IDEA (the Institute for Diversity and Empowerment at Annenberg). He is the author of two books, a multimedia/film producer, and has published articles and essays about U.S. Black social movements and political ideologies, globalization, fine arts, popular culture and U.S.-China relations and cultural contact. His most recent book, KAOS Theory: The Afrokosmic Ark of Ben Caldwell (Angel City Press, 2023), explores the creative contributions and philosophical insights of Los Angeles filmmaker and multimedia artist Ben Caldwell and the community arts organization he founded, KAOS Network. Frazier\u27s first book, The East is Black: Cold War China in the Black Radical Imagination (Duke University Press, 2014), analyzes the political and cultural ties cultivated between China and U.S. Black political movements during the Cold War, and the role that travel, media and representation played in this process. His second project, It’s Yours: A Story About Hip Hop and the Internet (2019), is a documentary film that examines how hip-hop artists’ and the broader global hip-hop community’s use of the Internet and digital technologies has revolutionized the music industry and global youth culture

The aspect of leadership has existed since the dawn of time, with scholars conducting extensive studies from various angles and views, which were then produced into literary works. In the Malay Archipelago, Taj al-Salatin manuscript (1603M) is widely known as a masterpiece which highlighted leadership qualities from the Islamic perspective. This study was conducted to identify the author‟s ideas on Islamic leadership in the context of Malay Archipelago, using descriptive method by analysing the manuscript. The findings showed that leaders and leadership are considered as a mandate from Allah S.W.T. Good leaders must be qualified, with higher knowledge and morals than their subjects. Taj al-Salatin introduces the idea that leaders should practice Tasawwuf, which among its practises include constant self reminder of death, rejecting lust and desires, and prioritising remembrance to Allah. In his manuscript, Bukhari al-Jauhari presents the vision, idealism and the idea of "leaders are perfect beings", which embodies the concept of Tauhid and upholds noble character for universal humanity. A leader of a nation should always stand on the grounds of good moral values and the people are led towards creating a peaceful, prosperous and happy nation

The Gnostic Author of Harold Bloom

    No full text
The article contextualizes at first the occurrence of the so-called authorship studies that arose as a kind of reaction to the post-structuralist (R. Barthes and M. Foucault) redefinition of authorship. Harold Bloom then positioned himself in this context. Namely, from the belief that post-structuralist anti-humanist tendencies initiated degenerative processes, and ultimately the disintegration of literature, he placed the canon and the author at the forefront of his literary theory. While much has been written about the first term, the second—the question of the authorship—has been mostly neglected in Bloom studies. Therefore, the article focuses primarily on Bloom’s interpretation of the author. The article tries to show that his understanding of authorship (as well as the canon, after all) derives from the Gnostic tradition (Valentin and Luria). For Bloom, the author is, it is concluded, primarily a genius—one who creates inspired by a “spark,” a pneuma, a divinity at the bottom of one’s own mind, which is actually also a certain form of anti-humanism

Pirasat (hereinafter referred to as PR) is a Javanese manuscript derived from Taj As Salatin (hereinafter referred to as TAS). A sentence was discovered at the beginning of the PR text that informs the manuscript was produced by scriber after hearing TAS text. PR research aims to reveal the path of PR derivation from TAS as an attempt to add on knowledge related to the history of the text. The method used in PR research is comparative literature to review the receptions that emerge from the manuscript that has been done philologically. Derivation of PR is showing that the text was translated directly from TAS, not through an adapted TAS text that was known in Javanese literature, called Serat Tajussalatin (hereinafter referred to as ST). PR has different characteristics that even though it is a translated text, it has been found that PR has different variations of eye physiognomy section, this made PR that had the most variative eye section compared to TAS and ST. PR is a Javanese manuscript from TAS which only contains the 19th chapter of the text, although PR is translated from TAS, PR shows the creativity of the author which is shown by how different section that has been obtained from TAS was added. This is evidence of the response that has been given by the scriber who has heard the text
