Nishi Amane and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel : speculation on Natural Law (性法) and Utility (利)
論文NISHI Amane (1829-97) is known as an enlightenment philosopher in Meiji period Japan. He suggested lots of new terminologies, such as 哲学 (philosophy), 主観 (subjective) and 客観 (objective), and introduced European philosophy and logic. Many researchers have so far pointed out that NISHI was influenced by J.S, Mill and Auguste Comte concerning his enlightenment thoughts. But nobody analyzed the connection between NISHI and Hegel.
This paper clarifies that NISHI kept a strong interest in Hegel's pantheism until he noticed the importance of utilitarian morals and psychology. Positivism and utilitarianism was resulted from his hard struggle to overcome Hegel's pantheism in order to establish his unique "unified science".
We can trace his thinking process in these five texts, 国民気風論, 性法略, 性法説約, 人世三宝説 and 利学. These texts show us that NISHI made efforts to find three treasures (三宝); 健康 (health), 知識 (knowledge) and 富有 (wealth) to teach Japanese people natural laws which were essential for them to catch up with the Europeans. According to the misunderstanding of 性法 and 利 and beside the public image of NISHl as an enlightenment philosopher, we can hardly grasp NISHI's real intention to propose three treasures. Through reexamining the meaning of three treasures (三宝) we can understand how deeply NISHI was influenced by Hegel and how hard he struggled to overcome the European's disdain of Asians.departmental bulletin pape

慢性腎臓病、急性腎障害の生体肝移植後の予後に対する影響
Background and aims: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) have been discussed as complications following living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).
The aim of this study was to clarify the relationships among CKD, AKI, and the prognosis after LDLT. Methods: This study included 118 patients who underwent LDLT in our department. A low eGFR (<60 mL/min/1.73 m2) was regarded to indicate CKD. AKI 1 and AKI 2 were characterized by an increase in the serum creatinine level of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/dL, respectively, within one wk after LDLT. We investigated the risk factors for and the relevance of CKD and AKI on the prognosis. Results: AKI 1 was associated with sepsis and intra-operative bleeding (p = 0.0032, p = 0.001). AKI 2 was associated with sepsis and hepatitis C infection (p < 0.001, p = 0.027). A pre-operative eGFR of 60–89 and diabetes were the risk factors for the development of CKD in POY 2 (p = 0.018, p = 0.002). AKI 2, sepsis, and diabetes were
the risk factors for the patient death within one yr after LDLT (p = 0.010, p = 0.002, p = 0.022). AKI 2 and sepsis were the risk factors for death within two yr after LDLT (p = 0.005, p = 0.018). Conclusions: Recognizing the risk factors and careful management for preventing both AKI and CKD may improve the prognosis of patients following LDLT.
MORI ÔGAI : THE PHILOSOPHY OF VITA SEXUALIS
pdfMori Ôgai (1862-1922), one of the most famous writers of Meiji Japan, is hardly considered as a philosopher. In my opinion, he should be considered as one if his contemporaries such as Nishi Amane (1829-1897) or Inoue Testsujirô (1855-1944) are to be considered as philosophers. For even though he never wrote any book of philosophy in life, he shows a great quality of a philosopher in his literary works such as Vita Sexualis (1909), Môsô (Dilusions, 1911) or Kano-yôni (As if, 1912).
Some people think Ôgai is a mere positivist, but if we read his works carefully, we find him more philosopher than he seems to be. In Vita Sexualis whose hero is a professor in philosophy, the author presents an ambiguous position. On one side, he shows a real zeal for self-knowledge; on the other, he remains as a sophist. In Môsô, the author exposes the problem of being as well as of truth in a way that only a genuine philosopher is able to do it. And in Kano-yôni, he tries to justify his ambivalent position in front of his society, in the name of "philosophy of as if'. Thus till the end of his life, he continues to play the role expected of him as if he had never been preoccupied by any philosophical question. Ôgai explains his great interest in philosophical problems by the influence of neo-confucianism, but in my opinion, it is rather his cultural shock in the West that made a definate effect on his philosophical awakening. This does not mean that his discovery of philosophy is due to the western influence he received in Europe, but that it is due to his disconnection from his own society. Of course, Philosophy discovered by him will die when he gets back to his country, where he is obliged to play the role given to him by his society. We can hear a sad voice of a philosopher in his literary works, a sort of weeping of a man who had to transform philosophy into a sort of sophism.conference pape
The community composition of diatom resting stages in sediments of the northern Bering Sea in 2017 and 2018: the relationship to the interannual changes in the extent of the sea ice
In the Bering Sea shelf, annual changes in the sea ice extent are large. In this study, we compare the viable diatom resting stages in sediments during the summer of 2017 when the sea ice retreat was late and 2018 when the sea ice retreat was early. South of St. Lawrence Island, the germinating cell number was 10-100 times greater in 2018 than it was in 2017. The taxonomic composition also showed large annual differences: Fragilariopsis/Fossula spp., which are ice algae species, were abundant in 2017, but Thalassiosira spp. dominated in 2018. Satellite observations confirmed that sea ice diminished before the ice-edge bloom in 2018, but sea ice remained until the ice-edge bloom in 2017. This study shows that the community composition of viable diatom resting stages is largely affected by the timing of the sea ice retreat
Role of Xanthurenic Acid 8-O-β-d-Glucoside, a Novel Fluorophore that Accumulates in the Brunescent Human Eye Lens¶
Role of xanthurenic acid 8-O-β-D-glucoside, a novel fluorophore that accumulates in the brunescent human eye lens
We have been able to identify a blue fluorophore from the low-molecular weight soluble fraction of human adult nondiabetic brunescent cataract lenses as xanthurenic acid 8-O-β-D-glucoside (XA8OG) (excitation = 338 nm and emission = 440 nm). To determine the role of this fluorophore in the lens, we have examined its photophysical and photodynamic properties. We found XA8OG to have a fluorescence quantum yield (Φ) of 0.22 and a major emission lifetime of 12 ns. We found it to be a UVA-region sensitizer, capable of efficiently generating singlet oxygen species but little of superoxide. We also demonstrated that XA8OG oxidizes proteins when irradiated with UVA light, causing photodynamic covalent chemical damage to proteins. Its accumulation in the aging human lens (and the attendant decrease of its precursor O-β-D-glucoside of 3-hydroxykynurenine) can, thus, add to the oxidative burden on the system. XA8OG, thus, appears to be an endogenous chromophore in the lens, which can act as a cataractogenic agent
