This study examines the institutional characteristics of Japan's regional housing systems and public perceptions within the context of the mandatory compliance with national energy-saving standards beginning in 2025, focusing on how these factors influence the adoption of energy-efficient housing. Analysis of regional housing initiatives in 19 prefectures revealed three types: (1) those combining national and local subsidies, (2) those relying solely on local subsidies, and (3) those relying solely on national subsidies. This study clarifies that differences in institutional design significantly affect adoption levels. Tottori Prefecture operates the “NE-ST” high-performance housing standard, supported by both local subsidies and national programs. Nagasaki Prefecture relies solely on national subsidies and has relatively low performance requirements. According to a survey in Tottori Prefecture, NE-ST homes receiving subsidies accounted for 14% of new homes built in fiscal year 2024, while 32% of new homes met NE-ST performance standards without subsidies. This indicates progress in regional adoption supported by local government policies and technical capabilities. In contrast, despite the launch of the Nagasaki-style housing system in 2023, Nagasaki Prefecture has limited institutional incentives and low resident perceptions. Surveys targeting Nagasaki residents (FY2023: 1,223 respondents; FY2024: 1,619 respondents) showed rising home purchase intentions among residents in their 20s and 30s. Residents aware of mandatory energy efficiency requirements exhibited significantly higher purchase intentions. However, perceptions of Nagasaki-style housing remained below 10%, suggesting insufficient adoption. These results suggest that the existence of subsidies from local governments, high performance standards, and targeted information provision significantly influence the adoption of housing in the region. To promote adoption, it is necessary to emphasize the health and comfort benefits of insulation and airtightness, and to strengthen public relations activities targeting younger generations and individuals with high energy-saving perceptions.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.17-24; 2026departmental bulletin pape

In response to the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, Ishikawa Prefecture established three types of temporary housing: conventional, community-building, and hometown-return. Community centers and lounge rooms were attached based on the size of each housing complex. A private community center was built in Marine Town Complex No. 1, which has MH facilities. For the row-house style wooden temporary housing classified as community-building type, cases are increasing where, after serving their purpose as emergency temporary housing, they are repurposed as public housing. Regarding residential comfort evaluations, dissatisfaction with room size, layout, and shape was higher in wooden temporary housing units due to the unit's shape. Since the number of household members corresponding to each unit type varies, residents sometimes feel there are not enough rooms or insufficient storage space. In MH units, there were no items showing high dissatisfaction levels like those seen in wooden temporary housing. However, due to the MH's characteristic elongated shape, many expressed dissatisfaction with room size, layout, and shape. Similar opinions were obtained for wooden temporary housing, suggesting that planning should consider not only room size but also shape. Regarding the use of shared facilities within the housing complex, such as community centers and lounge rooms, while their location received high ratings, usage frequency showed that “0 times per month” was the most common response for both, accounting for over half of the responses. The next most common response was “1-2 times per month,” indicating that many residents do not use these facilities. Events were the most common purpose for use. Although multiple events are held, as indicated on the housing complex information board, the target audience is narrow, resulting in low attendance. Regarding the plaza, it became clear that residents do not currently recognize it as a plaza.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.25-32; 2026departmental bulletin pape

This study compares the registration and circulation status of akiya bank, relocation support systems, and the attributes and actual living conditions of migrants in Unzen City and Minamishimabara City, both located on the Shimabara Peninsula, to identify the characteristics and differences between the two cities. Analysis revealed that in vacant house distribution, Unzen City showed a high contract rate of approximately 80%, with demand concentrated in convenient areas. In contrast, Minamishimabara City had a contract rate of only about 50%, indicating significant regional disparities in contracts. Regarding support systems, Unzen City has established comprehensive programs including living and childcare support, while Minamishimabara City's system focuses primarily on vacant house renovation subsidies. Comparing migrant attributes, Unzen City saw migration by families raising children and those moving for business purposes, whereas Minamishimabara City attracted migrants across a wide age range, with a notable number moving for agricultural purposes. Furthermore, the factors prioritized in housing selection were shown to correspond with regional characteristics. These results suggest that differences in geographical conditions, industrial structure, and program implementation may influence the circulation of vacant houses and the settlement patterns of migrants in both cities. Moving forward, it is necessary to examine the utilization of vacant houses and migration policies for the entire Shimabara Peninsula through a survey of Shimabara City.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.57-63; 2026departmental bulletin pape

    No full text
Background/Aim: In advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) combinations (ICI-ICI) and ICI plus tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) combinations (ICI-TKI) are standard first-line therapies. However, real-world data directly comparing these approaches remain limited. This study aimed to compare treatment outcomes between ICI-ICI and ICI-TKI therapies. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 58 patients who received first-line ICI-ICI therapy (ipilimumab plus nivolumab) or ICI-TKI therapy (pembrolizumab plus axitinib, avelumab plus axitinib, nivolumab plus cabozantinib, or pembrolizumab plus lenvatinib) for advanced RCC at Nagasaki University Hospital (March 2018 to June 2024). Primary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival, and objective response rate (ORR). Safety profiles were also evaluated. Results: We included 36 patients in the ICI-ICI group and 22 in the ICI-TKI group. The median follow-up was 17.5 months. The median age of patients in the ICI-TKI group was significantly older than that in the ICI-ICI group (74 vs. 66 years, p<0.001). The median PFS was 30 months in the ICI-ICI group and 25 months in the ICI-TKI group. The median overall survival was 51 months in the ICI-ICI group and 49 months in the ICI-TKI group, with no significant difference observed for either endpoint. The ORR was also similar between the groups. Notably, two complete responses occurred in the ICI-ICI group. The treatment discontinuation rate due to grade ≥3 adverse events was not significantly different between the ICI-ICI and ICI-TKI groups (30.6% vs. 40.9%). Conclusion: Across all International Metastatic RCC Database Consortium risk groups, PFS, OS, and ORR showed no significant differences between ICI-ICI and ICI-TKI therapies. Treatment selection should consider patient-specific factors. Validation through larger prospective studies is warranted. In Vivo, 40(1), pp. 389-397; 2026journal articl

In recent years, digital nomads have rapidly emerged as a new type of mobile workforce, with their long-term stays bringing both economic opportunities and social pressures to host regions, particularly peripheral and island areas. This study evaluated the suitability of Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan—which comprises numerous islands—by constructing a composite "Digital Nomad Location Score" using the Japan MESH3. The score integrates five perspectives: communication environment, transportation access, community, tourism, and cost of living. Spatial datasets were obtained through scraping and open data sources, converted into metrics such as average stay costs and accessibility values for each indicator, and then stratified using the Jenkens natural segmentation method. Regarding the weighting of indicators, we referred to Zhang et al.'s Digital Nomad-Friendly indicators while excluding factors related to natural landscapes, which were judged to have limited variation within Nagasaki Prefecture. We then renormalized the weights for the remaining indicators and applied them. This revealed a high level of suitability in central Nagasaki, Sasebo, and major port areas. In contrast, island regions exhibited moderate scores, while mountainous and peripheral areas demonstrated low scores. This finding indicates a substantial degree of regional heterogeneity in the overall scores within the prefecture.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.118-125; 2026departmental bulletin pape

In this study, a web-based visualization system was developed to monitor vehicle movement and driving conditions using location data acquired from Ichigojam and GPS sensors installed in vehicles. Data accumulated from previous Ichigojam-based logging experiments were processed to calculate speed, elevation, and timestamp conversions, which were then displayed through a user interface for post-analysis. In addition, a real-time monitoring mode was implemented to retrieve the latest GPS data block and visualize driving conditions, with updates executed once per second. The management system enables integrated analysis of vehicle behavior, including stored data review, speed evaluation, and stop detection, thereby adding practical value to field data collected from vehicles.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.126-131; 2026departmental bulletin pape

This study investigates the effectiveness of physical environmental support, specifically the use of "jigs," in overcoming physical barriers faced by DIY beginners when using electric power tools. Building on previous research that focused on information support, this study evaluates how jigs influence processing accuracy and psychological burden through a controlled experiment involving plywood cutting with a jigsaw. The results demonstrate that the use of jigs significantly improves cutting precision (reducing standard deviation and maximum deviation) and minimizes individual skill disparities compared to freehand operation. Psychologically, the physical guidance provided by jigs reduced anxiety regarding tool handling and significantly enhanced self-efficacy by ensuring successful execution. The study suggests that jigs function as an interface that bridges the gap between high-power tools and unskilled users, highlighting the importance of integrating physical environmental support with instructional materials to foster safer and more autonomous DIY practices.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.94-101; 2026departmental bulletin pape

Remdesivir as a potent antiviral against prototype and current epidemic Oropouche virus strains (BeAn19991 and PE-IAM4637)

    No full text
The Oropouche virus (OROV), an orthobunyavirus transmitted by biting midges, is the causative agent of Oropouche fever, which has caused multiple outbreaks in South and Central America. During the most recent epidemic in 2023–2025, >25,000 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported in Brazil, and no licensed antivirals have been reported to be effective date. In this study, we generated a recombinant OROV-expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (rOROV/GFP) to facilitate rapid and sensitive antiviral evaluation. Growth kinetics demonstrated that rOROV/GFP replicated less efficiently than wild-type rOROV and that the historical prototype strain (BeAn19991) exhibited higher replication efficiency than the recent epidemic isolate (PE-IAM4637) in both Vero E6 and Huh7 cells. Using this system, we evaluated the antiviral activity of ribavirin, favipiravir (T-705), and remdesivir against OROV. All three compounds inhibited OROV replication in a dose-dependent manner, with remdesivir showing the greatest potency (IC₅₀ values of 0.31 µM). Taken together, our findings highlight remdesivir as a promising candidate for the treatment of Oropouche fever caused by OROV. Furthermore, we established rOROV/GFP as a powerful tool for antiviral drug screening.Virus Research, 363, art. no. 199680; 2026journal articl

Due to prolonged economic stagnation and the declining birthrate combined with an aging population, it has become increasingly difficult to provide public services at traditional levels, and local communities are expected to take on part of this responsibility through mutual support. In this context, the concept of the “New Public Commons” has gained attention. This study focuses on greening activities such as maintaining parks and flowerbeds along roadsides. Specifically, it examines the “Koyagi Tulip Festival” held in Koyagi-machi, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, along with the associated activity of planting tulip bulbs. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the effects of these activities on community development. The findings indicate that the Koyagi Tulip Festival—which originated from resident-led initiatives and later incorporated governmental involvement—plays a significant role in promoting community-based town planning. It was also found that these activities provide opportunities for strengthening relationships among residents. In this region, where the aging rate is particularly high, the festival and related activities offer valuable opportunities for communication among older adults. Moreover, attaching a festival event to the greening activities has increased public visibility, which in turn enhances participants’ motivation. In addition, the fact that welfare facilities such as day-service centers visit the site as part of their own event programs highlights the role of the area as a place of relaxation for the community. Residents have also expressed expectations that these continuous activities will contribute to regional revitalization.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.41-48; 2026departmental bulletin pape

This study examines the role of coworking spaces in promoting migration to remote islands, focusing on Fukue Island in Nagasaki Prefecture. Based on interviews with facility staff, user surveys, and behavioral observations, we analyzed user interactions and spatial influences. Findings reveal that coworking spaces function not merely as workspaces but as hubs connecting migrants and local residents. Particularly in spaces equipped with food and lodging facilities and staffed by permanent personnel, the exchange of housing and employment information is facilitated. Appropriately designed and managed spaces can strengthen ties with the community and contribute to promoting migration.長崎大学大学院工学研究科研究報告, 56(106), pp.49-56; 2026departmental bulletin pape
