Authority and Personality in M.M. Bakhtin\u27s Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity

    No full text
M.M. Bakhtin\u27s fundamental claim in his seminal essay Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity situates verbal action as the most essential constituent of human personality. A careful reading of this text reveals important truths about the relationship between free individual personhood and the nature of the speech utterance. Bakhtin connects the human experience of speech to the life and person of Jesus Christ emphasizing the incarnation and the Trinitarian view of God as essential principles for understanding the creative power of the word and consequent liabilities. Bakhtin develops these theological and philosophical coordinates around a discussion of the author-hero relationship in the novel asserting that the verbal utterance is creatively involved in building and sustaining the inner personhood of those it addresses. Bakhtin\u27s critical conclusion substantiates that from whom a word is received, and to whom the spoken word appeals has weighty influence on the type and character of human personality, and that personality\u27s relationship to authority

Mapping the structure and development of Science using co-citation analysis

    No full text
Co-citation analysis is a unique method used for studying the cognitive structure of science andassessing the research productivity. It is a research tool for examining the intellectual development and structure of the scientific discipline. This paper illustrates principles, techniques and applications of co-citation analysis. It also introduces the newly emerging co-citation analysis softwares, especially SciVal Spotlight and CiteSpace. Co-citation analysis is based on grouping together the papers that are frequently cited in pairs. Combined with single-link clustering and multidimensional scaling techniques, co-citation analysis can literally map the structure of specialized research areas as well as science as a whole

Testing protoplanetary disc dispersal with radio emission

    No full text
We consider continuum free–free radio emission from the upper atmosphere of protoplanetary discs as a probe of the ionized luminosity impinging upon the disc. Making use of previously computed hydrodynamic models of disc photoevaporation within the framework of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray irradiation, we use radiative transfer post-processing techniques to predict the expected free–free emission from protoplanetary discs. In general, the free–free luminosity scales roughly linearly with ionizing luminosity in both EUV- and X-ray-driven scenarios, where the emission dominates over the dust tail of the disc and is partial optically thin at cm wavelengths. We perform a test observation of GM Aur at 14–18?GHz and detect an excess of radio emission above the dust tail to a very high level of confidence. The observed flux density and spectral index are consistent with free–free emission from the ionized disc in either the EUV- or the X-ray-driven scenario. Finally, we suggest a possible route to testing the EUV- and X-ray-driven dispersal model of protoplanetary discs, by combining observed free–free flux densities with measurements of mass-accretion rates. On the point of disc dispersal one would expect to find an M?2? scaling with free–free flux in the case of EUV-driven disc dispersal or an ?* scaling in the case of X-ray-driven disc dispersa

Cultivating Researcher-Sensibility in Novice Designers: Exploring Genre-Specific Heuristics for Game Evaluation in a Design Studio

    No full text
This paper presents an eight-day design studio that teaches heuristic evaluation of games to third-year bachelor students at the School of Design, Southern University of Science and Technology. Through this course, students gain the first-hand experiences of developing heuristics for games through online survey and using them in idea generation and game evaluation. 13 students (working in groups of two or individually) developed 88 heuristics for 8 game genres by analyzing 349 quotes of game reviews collected from online. The heuristics were further developed into questionnaires and tested with invited 51 game players, followed up by post-interviews. The heuristics were also used as inspirational tools to help the students generate design ideas in an ideation exercise. Results of the students’ work indicate usefulness of the heuristics as evaluative and inspirational tools. In the discussion, we reflected on the challenges encountered by the students over the course and how dealing with these challenges could reveal further directions of teaching research methods in HCI studios.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Design Aesthetic

Functions of Exponential Growth in a Half-Plane, Sets of Uniqueness, and the Müntz–Szász Problem for the Bergman Space

    No full text
We introduce and study some new spaces of holomorphic functions on the right half-plane (Formula presented.) In a previous work, S. Krantz, C. Stoppato, and the first named author formulated the Müntz–Szász problem for the Bergman space, that is, the problem to characterize the sets of complex powers (Formula presented.) with (Formula presented.) that form a complete set in the Bergman space (Formula presented.) where (Formula presented.) In this paper, we construct a space of holomorphic functions on the right half-plane, that we denote by (Formula presented.) whose sets of uniqueness (Formula presented.) correspond exactly to the sets of powers (Formula presented.) that are a complete set in (Formula presented.) We show that (Formula presented.) is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, and we prove a Paley–Wiener-type theorem and several other structural properties. We determine both a necessary and a sufficient condition on a set (Formula presented.) to be a set of uniqueness for (Formula presented.) thus providing a condition for the solution of the Müntz–Szász problem for the Bergman space. Finally, we prove that the orthogonal projection is unbounded on (Formula presented.) for all (Formula presented.

Pilot evaluations of a non-verbal startle and surprise management method, tested during airline recurrent simulator training

    No full text
Aviation safety organizations have recommended that airline pilots are trained for startle and surprise. However, little information is available on useful training interventions. Therefore, a training intervention trial was executed during airline recurrent simulator training. The method consisted of a slow visual scan from the side-window, over the instruments, ending with facing the other pilot. Following a recorded video instruction, 38 airline pilots in two-pilot crews performed a training scenario in which they could apply the method. Data on application and evaluation of the method were obtained from each pilot. Few pilots actually applied the method (18.4%), and many gave low ratings to applicability of the method in the scenario, as well as in operational practice. Results show that a startle management method, as well as manner in which it is trained, should be carefully evaluated before being implemented in training practice
