How well do climate models simulate atmospheric teleconnctions over the North Pacific and East Asia associated with ENSO?
During the El Nio and La Nia mature phase, atmospheric teleconnections over the North Pacific and East Asia vary considerably on sub-seasonal time scales, and are strongly phase-locked to the sub-seasonal evolution. In this study, we investigate how well climate models that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) simulate the sub-seasonal evolution of teleconnections over the North Pacific and East Asia associated with El Nio-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In the observations, there is a prominent anticyclone anomaly over the Kuroshio extension region (i.e. Kuroshio anticyclone), which significantly affects East Asian climate in the early winter (November-December) of El Nio years. However, in January, the Kuroshio anticyclone suddenly disappears, and a cyclonic flow dominates over the North Pacific. It is found here that the CMIP5 models simulate the overall extratropical teleconnection patterns, but they fail to reproduce some of these sub-seasonally-varying features in atmospheric circulation. For example, the models tend to simulate a weaker Kuroshio anticyclone in the early winter during El Nio phases, and fail to capture the abrupt decay of the Kuroshio anticyclone in the late winter. We demonstrate here that these systematic errors in ENSO teleconnection can be explained by systematic errors in tropical precipitation associated with ENSO. That is, negative precipitation anomalies over the western North Pacific (WNP) are too weak in the models compared to that in the observations, and their amplitude tends to be strengthened from December to the following January, while they are weakened in the observations. In addition, analyses on the inter-model diversity strongly support that relative magnitudes of WNP and central Pacific precipitation anomalies are critical for determining sub-seasonal evolution of ENSO teleconnections over the North Pacific and East Asia.113Nsciescopu
Rotation of Graphene on Cu during Chemical Vapor Deposition and Its Application to Control the Stacking Angle of Bilayer Graphene
© 2022 American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.Control of the stacking angle (θS) of bilayer graphene (BLG) is essential for fundamental studies and applications of BLG. Especially, the use of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to grow high-quality BLG requires this control, but methods to achieve it are not available. Here, we found that graphene rotates during the CVD process, and this action can be exploited as a new strategy to control θS. The rotation of graphene was revealed by the population changes of AB-stacked BLG and 30°-twisted BLG upon the growth time change; this change can only be explained by rotation of graphene. The rotation is largely affected by the edge state of graphene which can be tuned by growth temperature. The rotation was observed through experimental results combined with theoretical calculation. The rotation can be blocked or accelerated by controlling the growth temperature, by which highly selective growth of AB-stacked BLG or 30°-twisted BLG can be achieved.11Nsciescopu
Chinese Children’s School Experiences Represented in Picture Books
In a graduate level children’s literature class, Eun Hye, the second author, was facilitating the discussion of the importance of multicultural children’s literature from an assigned reading of Rudine Sims Bishop\u27s “Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors” (1990). As Lin, the first author, was engaged in the discussion by sharing different childhood experiences, one student, who was adopted from China by Americans as a toddler, said that she found herself rarely represented in picture books while growing up in the U.S. We both felt bad because we grew up in China and Korea respectively, surrounded by many children’s books representing children like ourselves. However, when we each came to the United States in our 20s to attend higher education, we quickly learned that there is a limited number of books portraying Chinese and Korean children living in the United States. At different time periods, we both developed intellectual interests toward critically examining how these two groups of children (Chinese and Korean) have been portrayed in multicultural children’s books
Stabilization of Naphthalene Diimide Anions by Ion Pair Formation in Nonaqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries
In redox flow batteries, a compelling strategy for enhancing the charge capacity of redox-active organic molecules involves storing multiple electrons within a single molecule. However, this approach poses unique challenges such as chemical instability by forming radicals, elevated energy requirements, and unsustainable charge concentration. Ion pairing is a possible solution to achieve charge neutrality and engineer redox potential shifts but has received limited attention. In this study, we demonstrate that Li+ can stabilize naphthalene diimide (NDI) anions dissolved in acetonitrile and significantly shift the second cathodic potential close to the first. Our findings, supported by density functional theory calculations and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, indicate that dimeric NDI species form stable ion pairs with Li+. Conversely, K+ ions exhibit weak interactions, and cyclic voltammograms confirm significant potential shifts when stronger Lewis acids and solvents with lower donor numbers are employed. Galvanostatic examinations reveal a single voltage plateau with Li+, which indicates a rapid redox process involving doubly charged NDI2- with Li+. These aggregated ion pairs offer the additional benefits of hindering crossover events, contributing to excellent cyclability, and suppressing undesirable side reactions even after 1000 redox cycles.11Nsciescopu
Father Andrew Mullen 1790-1818: a study in early nineteenth century spirituality
This thesis is laid out in three parts: Part I. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death. Part II. The burial of Andrew Mullen and the immediate cult to him This is based on documentary evidence. Part III. Most of this part is a catalogue of testimonies taken from 1993 onwards. Then there is the conclusion on the popular devotion to Andrew Mullen stressing the theological aspect of the subject. In the course of writing the thesis it was decided to separate the documentary evidence from the oral tradition. This was advantageous in developing the thesis, and the documents provided a secure basis for the oral tradition. Two pieces of information were found in March 1997. They are death notices: 2 January 1819, The Leinster Journal and 7 January 1819, The Car low Morning Post. There is a slight discrepancy between the two on the date of his death. Also this discrepancy shows a slight difference from the date of the tombstone
Eurasian winter temperature change in recent decades and its association with Arctic sea ice loss
The surface air temperature in the northern mid-latitudes during winter showed a significant cooling trend from the late 1990s to the early 2010s, in spite of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. This unexpected cooling, which was particularly strong across Eurasia, has been partly attributed to Arctic sea-ice loss. Here, the statistical relationship between Arctic sea-ice loss and surface air-temperature change during winter in Eurasia, which is often referred to as the warm Arctic–cold Eurasia pattern, is re-evaluated by using a break-point trend analysis and maximum covariance analysis. A significant time-lagged covariability is observed between the Arctic sea-ice concentration over the Barents–Kara seas and the Eurasian surface air temperature during winter, with the former leading the latter by approximately two months. More importantly, the timing of an abrupt decline in the autumn Arctic sea ice that occurred in the late 1990s is coincident with the beginning of the Eurasian winter cooling. This concurrent trend change is statistically significant and robustly found in both the break-point analysis and maximum covariance analysis. These results suggest that both the interannual variability and decadal trend change seen for the surface air temperature during Eurasian winters are likely influenced by regional sea-ice changes over the Barents–Kara seas
Relationship between handgrip strength and pulmonary function in apparently healthy older women
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between handgrip strength and pulmonary function.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of a representative sample of older Korean women.
SETTING: The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling women aged 65 and older without chronic diseases or pulmonary disease (N=605).
MEASUREMENTS: Handgrip strength was measured using a digital hand dynamometer, and pulmonary function was tested according to guidelines of the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society using a spirometry system. Impaired pulmonary function was defined as a lower limit of normal (LLN) or less of forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for impaired pulmonary function according to handgrip strength quartile were calculated using multiple logistic regression analysis.
RESULTS: Mean FVC and FEV1 gradually increased in accordance with handgrip strength quartiles (all P <.001). After adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol ingestion, aerobic physical activity, resistance exercise, household income, and education level the odds of impaired pulmonary function were greater for participants in the first quartile of handgrip strength (≤19.25 kg) than for those in the fourth quartile (25.31-37.30 kg) (FVC LLN: OR=3.46, 95 % CI=1.52-7.88; FEV1 LLN: OR=2.62, 95 % CI=1.12-6.15).
CONCLUSION: Handgrip strength was positively associated with pulmonary function in a dose-dependent manner. Given the health implications of pulmonary function, timely detection of weaker handgrip strength in older people may be useful in assessing potential pulmonary function impairment.restrictio
In social psychology, environment and social processes are intricately linked. Every space has a part of influence on the way we view social relationships. Urban dystopias are not a rare occurrence in South-Korean contemporary literature, but if there exists an author who makes of the city a recurring antagonist in her work, it is Pyun Hye-young. Pyun Hye-young’s city is dirty, ruined, cruel and disgusting: physically confined, her characters are placed in extreme situations which highlight their fear, their loneliness and their powerlessness. This dystopia-like city becomes a way for Pyun Hye-young to rethink human relationships and the mental health of her characters, as she offers an example through her first novel, Ashes and Red
The Blockchain–Sustainability Nexus: Can This New Technology Enhance Social, Environmental and Economic Sustainability?
With the rise and fall of the prominence of Bitcoin, blockchain technology,
which provides public online ledgers used for the verification and recording of
transactions, has started to become the center of attention for diverse parties in the
global financial system. This chapter explores the nature of blockchain and discusses
how it may contribute to, or obstruct, sustainability. To this end, first, blockchain
technology is introduced. Next, a short discussion on sustainability is presented,
including how it is defined, measured, reported, and understood in theoretical
frameworks. After that, the 2015 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
are briefly explained. This is followed by a systematic literature review, which
highlights the scarcity of literature linking blockchain to sustainability. Finally, the
author offers her own reflections on the potential of blockchain to revolutionize the
financial services industry and weighs up the pros and cons vis-a-vis sustainable
