Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region

A letter written to Dr. Hu Shih, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Chinese Embassy, Washington, D. C., from T. N. Carswell, dated March 30, 1942. Carswell advises Shih that The First Baptist Church in Abilene is to receive from its members a gift offering for hungry China noting that a brief statement from Shih, dealing with the conditions in his country, would be genuinely helpful in the presentation of the appeal

Phagocytosis of GAS AP1 is reduced in the presence of hu-C4BP and hu-FH.

<p>(<b>A</b>) Binding of hu-FH and hu-C4BP decreases opsonophagocytosis of GAS strain AP1 <i>in vitro</i>. Strain AP1 was incubated with bone marrow derived macrophages from wild-type BALB/c mice in the presence of wild type, heat inactivated wild type (BALB/c HI), hu-C4BP, hu-FH or hu-C4BPxFH tg serum. Uptake of AP1 in BALB/c (wild type) serum was set to 100%. (<b>B</b>) and (<b>C</b>). Binding of hu-FH and hu-C4BP decreases opsonophagocytosis of AP1 <i>in vivo</i>. BALB/c and hu-C4BPxFH tg mice were injected i.p. with Carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester (CFSE)-labeled GAS strain AP1 (<b>B</b>; 5 BALB/c and 8 hu-C4BPxFH tg mice) or its isogenic mutant GAS strain BM27.6 that lacks expression of M protein (and therefore protein H) and neither binds hu-FH or hu-C4BP (<b>C;</b> 6 BALB/c and 5 hu-C4BPxFH tg mice). Phagocytic index was calculated as the product of the % of neutrophils in the peritoneal cavity and % of those neutrophils containing CFSE labeled GAS (see also <a href="http://www.plospathogens.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.ppat.1005043#ppat.1005043.s003" target="_blank">S3 Fig</a> where these measurements are shown separately). Results are expressed as Mean ± SEM of at least three independently performed experiments. Statistical analysis: 1way ANOVA with Dunnetts post-test (<b>A</b>) and students t-test (<b>B</b>-<b>C</b>).</p

Hu-NSG mice have viremia and clinical signs of disease after DENV infection.

(A-C) Hu-NSG mice were infected subcutaneously with 106 PFU DENV/mouse. Viremia (n = 17 DENV infected) (A), temperature change (n = 25 DENV infected, n = 10 control) (B), and erythema change (n = 25 DENV infected, n = 10 control) (C) were measured throughout the infection. Data are represented as the mean number of RNA copies per milliliter of serum (A), mean change in temperature (°C) from baseline (B), or mean change in erythema index (O.D.) from baseline (C). Error bars are 1 SEM. (B-C) Statistical significance was determined using a two-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons t-test (with Holm-Sidak correction). Statistical significance next to the virus strain name indicate that that infection was significantly different from the UV-inactivated control as assessed by two-way ANOVA. Significance at a specific timepoint indicates that the condition at that timepoint was significantly different from the UV-inactivated control via t-test but that the overall infection was not significantly different via ANOVA. * p<0.05; **p<0.01; *** p<0.005; ****p<0.001.</p

A possible mechanism of superconductivity in high-T-c cuprates

    No full text
This paper derives a generic T-c formula by using the long-range phase coherence condition in quantum phase fluctuation of the order parameter. Taking the two-local-spin-mediated interaction (TLSMI) proposed by Liu and Chen [Phys. Rev. B 58 (1998) 8812] as a Cooper pair potential, and the T-c formula, this paper explains five basic experimental facts in high-T-c cuprates. The aim of this paper is to show that TLSMI is a possible pairing mechanism of superconductivity in high-T-c cuprates. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
