Healthy challenging design education for engineers

    No full text
Teaching design skills to engineering students has long been one of the main building blocks of the bachelor curriculums at the TU Delft faculties of Industrial Design Engineering and Architecture & the Built Environment. We observe that our students achieve high-level (design) competencies during their study time at TU Delft. But we also observe that design education goes together too often with over-aroused students and ambitious teachers, leading too often to higher levels of student stress. With the support of the Dutch 4TU Centre for EngineeringEducation, we asked first-year bachelor IDE and ABE design students about their perceived levels of arousal and the factors within the design education learning environment, which contribute to a positive or negative study experience. This paper will show our understanding of our design education pedagogies, our model of spheres of influence, and potential coping strategies for students and tutors. We indicate five spheres of influence for our design students: the student self, design tutors, classmates, the learning environment, and society at large. Each sphere consists of various potentially stressful factors. The coping strategies we propose focus on helping students to find ways to become aware of their feelings and thoughts, the meaning they give to them, and the kinds of behaviors and (short-term and long-term) consequences which follow from there. We also emphasize the role of the community of teachers and students to help individual students assess those (potentially) stressful situationsconstructivelyGreen Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Spatial Planning and StrategyMarketing and Consumer Researc

Application of shearography and the percussion method for the structural inspection of wall paintings: A case study of St. Christopher in Maria Church, Nisse

    No full text
Structural delamination in mural paintings is a complex phenomenon and is considered among the most frequent types of damage. In conservation practice, the most common technique to identify structural detachments is the percussion method. Full-field optical techniques based on interferometry, such as shearography, can provide a more scientifically substantiated evaluation of the condition of heterogeneous structures of wall paintings. The empirical nature of the percussion method was observed during the condition assessment of two medieval wall paintings in Maria Church, Nisse, the Netherlands. It can be argued that, to allow the formulation of specific treatment needs for structural delamination in wall paintings, accurate defect mapping and characterisation is needed. The application of shearography was believed to provide a holistic representation of the condition of the structure of the wall painting depicting St. Christopher in Maria Church. Preliminary comparison of the methods involved revealed a degree of matching between results obtained. Discrepancies, i.e. areas deemed extremely vulnerable during percussion testing that were not detected by shearography, are debatably caused by the misinterpretation of the acoustic response during percussion testing or the inability of shearography to detect in depth structural defects. Further research regarding shearography should focus on providing more information about the depth of structurally delaminated areas within the heterogeneous layered structure of wall paintings.Structural Integrity & Composite

Three-dimensional spectral measurements of paint samples using optical coherence tomography

    No full text
In this study, we describe a method for measuring the spectral reflectance of a paint layer at both the surface and in the volume of the paint layers. We first present a fringes model which illustrates the possibilities for spectral reconstruction using a Short-Time-Fourier-Transform algorithm. We investigate the remaing percentage errors and identified that there is a strong fluctuation along the wavelength range of the spectrometer. Then, we demonstrate the validity of our approach experimentally by measuring the spectral reflectance of a paint layer using a custom-made visible light optical coherence tomography system. There, we reconstruct the spectral reflectance of a paint layer by probing the surface and a depth range below the surface. Finally, we show the importance to include a wavelength sensitive correction in the reconstruction for taking into account the spectral shape of the light in the reference path of the interferometer. This work is part of the Down To The Ground project, in which the results of the OCT inspection will be used directly by a consortium of technical art historians and conservators.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Structural Integrity & Composite

    Il James di Putnam

    No full text
This paper reconstructs Hilary Putnam’s position concerning James’ philosophy by analyzing those aspects which have represented a major contribution to the evolution of the Putnamian Realism. After accurately describing the affinity between Wittgenstein and James which guides Putnam’s interest in James’ Pragmatism, the author revises the ethical, epistemological and metaphysical themes from which the most fruitful aspects of Pragmatism emerge. Some of these are: the conjunction between antidogmatism and antiscepticism, the procedural conception of knowledge and truth, the critique to physicalist reductionism and to common sense realism, and, finally, the thesis of the importance of the practical dimension in the development of philosophical analysis. This way, the currentness of the Jamesian battle against the dichotomic logic that rules our theoretical tradition is highlighted

The aim of this study was to identify the main factors of mental workload, which are induded in the (NASA-TLX) instrument, incidents in the Magistrates Court in Santa Catarina, in terms of their activities. The pressure of society, the main characteristic inherent to the profession of the Magistrate requires promptness and insight in the interpretation of laws and causes beyond the concern with productivity, great effort to the duties with neutrality. Research techniques used were the instrument of NASA-TLX subjective evaluation and measurement of physiological indicators such as heart rate, breathing and blood pressure. The qualitative research was conducted with fifteen (15) Judges of the Court of Santa Catarina to determine which factors of mental workload bring consequences for the health of Magistrates and confront them with the results of the application of NASA -TLX and the physiological indicators. Questionnaires with closed questions and focused exclusively on socioeconomic aspects were completed by the subjects, as well as the forms of the method of subjective evaluation of NASA-TLX, so that it be applied in its entirety. Before starting the trial session, physiological parameters were measured and after the completion of the session, another measurement was performed. The data were gathered in statement tables in order to get a visual representation of all the information, and consequently an overview of the data. We used the technique of triangulation, which allows the interaction of different sources of evidence to support the constructs, in order to detect convergences or divergences in information. Subsequently, we performed a detailed analysis of the data collected in order to explain the evidence that must be embasadas with the existing theory. Limitations of the study were significant, referring to the small number of studies on the subject and the data system of the Medical Officer of the Judiciary by Catarina does not appear in its records the distances to health care Magistrates, since it could to make a bridge between the clearances for psychosomatic disorders category in the study. The sample size does not represent that the statistical significance, was another limitation found, besides the non-clinical testing, the object of the literature review, was a point not raised in the study, as well as conducting the evaluation of magistrates in one opportunity, as well as the non-extension of the study to other servers. In addition to the many factors that may have affected the results of the research, the physiological measures may have been influenced by lifestyle, disease history, medication use and adherence to treatment. From a qualitative standpoint, the results of this study with the Judges during the trial session, are representative and show the mental demand is affected to a great extent. The burden of mental work can resonate so expressive and striking the disease process category that is usually associated with the load variations and results in modifications or changes to the overall work performance. In the measurement of physiological indicators was high in the results of most of the Magistrates, especially blood pressure, which showed higher sensitivity in that activity. Knowing that Hypertension - HTN is one of the most important public health problems in Brazil and one modifiable risk factor, concerted efforts will be needed, as well as implement measures that encourage prevention and health promotion of the Magistrates and that incorporate some changes in habits. It can be inferred then, that the similarity of the results suggest a trend of correlation between overload and increased blood pressure results may have been affected by innumerable factors and lifestyle habits such as sedentary lifestyle, stress, smoking, previous disease, overweight, food , among others, which demand a deeper scientific investigation
