Pascal Tutorial, 1987
There exists a limited number of tutorials for the Pascal programming language using the Apple Computer. The demand for these tutorials exceeds the supply. In this thesis an attempt was made to rectify this shortage by designing a Pascal tutorial for the Apple computer. This Pascal tutorial is designed to assist with instructing an introductory computer programming course in Pascal, incorporating Apple Superpilot as the authoring language. Emphasis is placed on making the program "user friendly." A person with no previous programming experience should be able to easily execute this tutorial. The information presented as the subject matter of the tutorial will follow the guidelines recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery
Samuel Beckett and the Writers of Port-Royal
It has been observed that ‘the literary influences on Beckett have been far more important than has been acknowledged, and more important indeed, than the philosophical influences’ (Smith 2002: 3). The truth of this statement is evidenced by the description that scholars have given of Samuel Beckett’s relationship to seventeenth century French classicism. To date, critical interest has been limited for the most part to the figure of the philosopher René Descartes on the (fragile) grounds that Beckett was exclusively concerned with the Cartesian imperative of clarity and order, the fundamental dualism between body and mind, and Nominalism.
Together with the assumption that Beckett’s vision was essentially Cartesian, his literary filiation with Pascal was suggested by critics, but only in terms of Beckett’s formal approach to the theatre. In his short article on En attendant Godot in 1953, the playwright Jean Anouilh was among the first reviewers to suggest that Beckett’s drama synthesizes the encounter between ‘classicism’ and a ‘modern’ form of art. It is well known that Beckett retained a lifelong admiration for Pascal – indeed, Pascal was one of his ‘old chestnuts’ (Knowlson 1997: 653). Little attention has been paid, however, to the originality of Pascal’s thought, the specific nature of his prose, and the impact these might have had upon Beckett’s mature work, especially the trilogy and the subsequent short prose. Yet, in the literary and philosophical context of post-war France, Beckett’s filiation with Pascal, their corresponding preoccupations, were evident to his contemporaries, who identified Pascal as an underlying presence in his works
Christianity in the ‘Pensées’ of Blaise Pascal and the reflections of Fulton Sheen. An attempt at comparison
Artykuł analizuje i porównuje apologetyczne metody dwóch znaczących postaci: Blaise’a Pascala (1623–1662) i Fultona Sheena (1895–1979). The article analyses and compares the apologetic methods of two significant figures: Blaise Pascal (1623–1662) and Fulton Sheen (1895–1979). Despite their differing historical and cultural contexts, both thinkers are concerned with defending Christianity, its credibility and its moral significance as a life proposition. Pascal, in his unfinished Pensées, focuses on the intrinsic greatness and misery of human existence, presenting Christianity as a path to transcendence. Sheen, on the other hand, in his book entitled Upward Heart. The Way to Spiritual Peace emphasises the need for self-discipline and self-knowledge as necessary means to achieve inner balance, maturity and peace. The article employs a comparative method to show how each author uses narrative, theology and philosophy to present Christianity as a response to the fundamental human quest for meaning and happiness, highlighting their relevance in the context of contemporary existential and moral challenges
Vasoactive peptides as biomarkers for the prediction of retinopathy of prematurity.
BACKGROUND
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a major complication in preterm infants. We assessed if plasma levels of midregional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (MR-proANP) and C-terminal pro-endothelin-1 (CT-proET1) serve as early markers for subsequent ROP development in preterm infants <32 weeks gestation.
METHODS
Prospective, two-centre, observational cohort study. MR-proANP and CT-proET1 were measured on day seven of life. Associations with ROP ≥ stage II were investigated by univariable and multivariable logistic regression models.
RESULTS
We included 224 infants born at median (IQR) 29.6 (27.1-30.8) weeks gestation and birth weight of 1160 (860-1435) g. Nineteen patients developed ROP ≥ stage II. MR-proANP and CT-proET1 levels were higher in these infants (median (IQR) 864 (659-1564) pmol/L and 348 (300-382) pmol/L, respectively) compared to infants without ROP (median (IQR) 299 (210-502) pmol/L and 196 (156-268) pmol/L, respectively; both P < 0.001). MR-proANP and CT-proET1 levels were significantly associated with ROP ≥ stage II in univariable logistic regression models and after adjusting for co-factors, including gestational age and birth weight z-score.
CONCLUSIONS
MR-proANP and CT-proET1 measured on day seven of life are strongly associated with ROP ≥ stage II in very preterm infants and might improve early prediction of ROP in the future.
IMPACT
Plasma levels of midregional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide and C-terminal pro-endothelin-1 measured on day seven of life in very preterm infants show a strong association with development of retinopathy of prematurity ≥ stage II. Both biomarkers have the potential to improve early prediction of retinopathy of prematurity. Vasoactive peptides might allow to reduce the proportion of screened infants substantially
The Symbolism of the Night that Becomes the Beginning. On the Night-time Obsessions of Pascal Quignard
Tekst poświęcony jest zagadnieniu nocy i jej symbolicznych konotacji w odniesieniu do albumu-eseju Pascala Quignarda Noc seksualna (przeł. K. Rutkowski). W moim szkicu stawiam pytania o inspiracje Pascala Quignarda mrokiem nocy i zajmujące go obsesje ciemności przed narodzinami człowieka. A text dedicated to the night and its symbolic connotations with regard to Pascal Quignard’s album-essay The Sexual Night (translated by K. Rutkowski). The author of the sketch enquires about Pascal Quignard’s inspiration sought in night-time darkness and obsessions of darkness prior to man’s birth. R. Zając points to Georges Bataille and his album The Tears of Eros as an important context of the imagination of the French man of letters. She is interested in the symbolic dimension of both the night and existential situations recurring in Quignard’s world
Boże klauny (u)topione w tradycji romantycznej
The core of the cultural myth of madness is a special treatment of the cognitive perspective of a madman, who “walks before a poet,” destroys established mental conventions, widens the boundaries of cognition, and cuts connections between words and objects that restrain literature. Thanks to the work of Michel Foucault, the author shows changes in the understanding of madness and points out some interpretive shifts between Romanticism and modernity. The author argues that the volume Boże klauny [God’s clowns] by Przemysław Dakowicz is a devaluation of the romantic figure of the “Crazy for God” into a degenerated clown. Dakowicz eagerly refers to biographies of such heroes of the modern world who entirely engaged in issues of art, philosophy, or religion – and stood eye to eye with their own madness: Vaslav Nijinsky, the wife of Thomas Stearns Eliot, Blaise Pascal, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Gunther Liebchen. Importantly, the contemporary crazy-wise do not transcend to spiritual reality, as the romantics did. Therefore, the volume by Dakowicz is weighted down with a symbolic burden of absence, emptiness, and silence. The purpose of the article is to prove that the issue of divine madness in Boże klauny is expanding from a romantic foundation based on general, literary allusiveness, and it refers more to romantic modality than to specific examples.
Measurement of the D+/- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions
The asymmetry in the production cross-section \sigma of D+/- mesons, A_P = (\sigma(D+) - \sigma(D-))/(\sigma(D+) + \sigma(D-)), is measured in bins of pseudorapidity \eta and transverse momentum p_T within the acceptance of the LHCb detector. The result is obtained with a sample of D+ -> K_S pi+ decays corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1, collected in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on \eta or p_T is observed
Pascal DeAngelis to Albert Britt, June 13, 1919
In a letter to Albert Britt on June 13, 1919, Pascal DeAngelis announces the release of the newest .22 caliber rim-fire rifle. He informs Britt this project involved seven years of work and consultation with rifle experts, such as Captain T. K. Lee, Captain C. L. Gilman, Lieutenant Colonel Townsend Whelen. Mr. DeAngelis recommends Horace Kephart view and describe this rifle for a review in “Outing” since he is one of the most well-known gun experts. He asks Britt for Kephart’s address to send him the rifle.(Copy.)
SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION.
UTICA, NEW YORK. U.S.A.
June 13, 1919.
Mr. Albert Britt, Editor,
Outing Publishing Company,
1*1-145 West 36th Street,
New York City.
Dear Sir:
Replying to your courteous letter of the 4th inst., we are about
to announce the appearance of the most seriously designed .22
caliber rim-fire repeating rifle that has ever been manufactured.
The rifle is the result of seven years experimental work in the
factory, guided and checked by suggestions and criticisms from
the ablest and most highly respected firearms, authorities of the
country. We have had the close co-operation and assistance of
Captain T. K. Lee, formerly of the Corps of Rifle Demonstrators,
Ordnance Department, USA, who has been international small-bore
champion for many years, and is unquestionably the finest smallbore shooter in the world. Captain C. L. Gilman, USA- former
Secretary of the Western League of the N.R.A., Lieut. Col.
Townsend Whelen, USA, author of the book "American Rifles'* and
the highest military firearms authority in the country,
Lieut. Col. D. C. McDougall, USMC, Major J. J. Dooley, USMC,
Major H. L. Smith, USMC, Major W. D. Smith, USMC, and others too
numerous to mention.
We should be delighted to submit one of these rifles to the writer's
old friend, Mr. Horace Kephart, for critical review to be published
in OUTING. Mr. Kephart is one of the highest firearms authorities
in the world, and easily ranks with the men mentioned above. We
feel that it is a decided honor both to the Savage Arms Corporation
to have the rifle criticised and reviewed by Mr. Kephart, and to
Outing to have a man of Mr. Kephart's distinction as a contributor.
We should very much prefer, however, not to have this rifle or any
other arm of our manufacture criticised editorially by a man of
markedly less ability, experience and reputation, whose favorable
criticism would carry no weight with the well informed shooting
public, and whose unfavorable criticism would be of no value in
producing any suggestions or changes, or any modifications which
would not be desirable.
In other words, we would be delighted to have anything we make
submitted to Mr. Kephart, knowing that his criticism would be fair
and impartial, based on the widest experience and knowledge of his
subject, and entitled to the greatest respect. We should not have
the temerity to suggest any change or modification in any criticism
that Mr. Kephart should write, no matter how unfavorable it might be
to our own product. If our arms have weak points, we have no right
to have fair criticism "soft pedaled," but we would dislike to
submit a firearm for editorial criticism to anyone whose standing
or ability does not entitle him to recognition as an authority.
If you will be good enough to give us Mr. Kephart's address, we
would be glad to ship the rifle to him for critical review.
Very truly yours, T**^%±3&L«**r

On the Calogero-Moser space associated with dihedral groups
International audienceUsing the geometry of the associated Calogero-Moser space, R. Rouquier and the author have attached to any finite complex reflection group several notions (Calogero-Moser left, right or two-sided cells, Calogero-Moser cellular characters), completing the notion of Calogero-Moser families defined by Gordon. If moreover is a Coxeter group, they conjectured that these notions coincide with the analogous notions defined using the Hecke algebra by Kazhdan and Lusztig (or Lusztig in the unequal parameters case). In the present paper, we aim to investigate these conjectures whenever is a dihedral group
First observation of Bs → J/ψf0(980) decays
Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the hadronic decay is observed. This CP eigenstate mode could be used to measure mixing-induced CP violation in the system. Using a fit to the π+π− mass spectrum with interfering resonances gives . In the interval ±90 MeV around 980 MeV, corresponding to approximately two full f0 widths we also find , where in both cases the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively
