Catastrofe e meraviglia.

The article aims to investigate a few philosophical notions underling Anna Maria Ortese’s work. In the case of this writer, it is possible to speak of an ethical, political, and theological dimension that, rather than being unrelated to her literary production, takes shape through fiction. The article focuses in particular on Le piccole persone, a collection of letters, articles and short essays, reading it in close connection with narrative examples. In this regard, L’infanta sepolta, a lesser-known work than the novels, offers a privileged point of view on the author’s poetics, making manifest some of its salient traits. Among them, the recourse to the marvelous takes pride of place, for it becomes the bearer of symbolic and semantic contents, as the place of expression of an otherness that preserves its own untranslatability. The article thus aims to show that the irreducible figure of the marvelous in Ortese embodies a deeply complex philosophy, which shows affinities with the reflection of twentieth-century thinkers and theologians (Simone Weil, Edith Stein), but also with the mystical tradition (especially Teresa of Ávila). Through such a poetics, the author succeeds in probing with power and originality the major issues of the twentieth century: evil, history, cosification, exploitation, the relations between the human and the nonhuman, the destruction of the other

"Negari tamen non potest Venetos Ius Civile Romanorum colere et venerari": Venetian Law and ius commune between the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
In the mid-Seventeenth century, Arthur Duck noted that the Venetians lived according to their own customs and laws, without adopting the Ius Civile Romanorum. The author, however, remarked that in modern Venice those same Roman laws were renowned and to some extent followed. The present contribution investigates this issue through an analysis of judicial practice in both criminal and civil matters. As we will see, the authority of ius commune in criminal matters was often evident and sometimes explicit, whereas in civil matters Roman laws were applied only insofar as they reflected natural justice and equity
A newly discovered novel and its transnational author: Maria Severn by Francisca Wood
This article focuses on a transnational Portuguese woman of letters, Francisca Wood, and her novel Maria Severn (1869), initially serialized in the pioneering weekly periodical that she directed, A Voz Feminina, later renamed O Progresso (1868–69). It draws on preliminary archival research to provide new biographical information on Wood, which sheds fresh light on her progressive convictions and British connections. Using as source text what appears to be the only surviving copy of Maria Severn in book form — recently discovered in the British Library — I examine the role of Wood as cultural mediator and suggest that the incontrovertible originality of her novel may stem from her creative assimilation of Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot
Abstract : Cardenolídeos such as ouabain and digoxin are known for their efficacy in treating congestive heart failure as antiarrhythmic drugs. Recently, new pharmacological activities have been found (antiviral and antitumor) to these "old" drugs. Given the growing interest in research and development of this group of compounds, as potential chemotherapeutic agents, this work aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects on tumor cells of three cardenolides (glucoevatromonoside, digitoxigenin monodigitoxoside and convallatoxin) previously selected for its potent cytotoxic action. Initially, they were screened in tumor cell lines of different origins and all of them showed potent action at nanomolar concentrations in all cell lines tested, particularly in lung tumor cells (A549). This cell line was then selected for further investigation to detect the kind of cell death caused by these three cardenolides. Glucoevatromonoside (GEV) was the most promising compound, and also investigated in U937 cells (histiocytic lymphoma). All these compounds block G2/M phase, whereas the convallatoxin increased the number of cells in subG0 phase. GEV was able to inhibit the expression of important proteins related to cell cycle, such as Cyclin B1 and p53. Beyond that, this compound caused cell cycle blockage in subG0 phase in U937 cells, demonstrating dependent cell type effect. The effect of cell death caused by GEV was also cell type dependent. In U937 cells, GEV showed a caspase dependent cell death while it is independent of caspase in A549 cells. Digitoxigenin monodigitoxoside did not show a significant percentage of cell death in A549 cells. Convallatoxin increased the number of pyknotic nuclei and Annexin-V positive cells, setting apoptotic cell death in A549 cells. Furthermore, the three compounds are capable of inhibiting cell migration and invasion in A549 cells as well as to reduce the expression of some proteins as MMP2, MMP9 and FAK (focal adhesion protein), which are essential in the process of metastasis. Moreover, GEV was able to inhibit the expression of important kinases, usually over expressed in tumor cells.. Taken together, these data suggest that these compounds, especially GEV can be considered promising candidates for the development of a pharmaceutical form to be used in the treatment of lung cancer
The Encounter between the West and the Arab World in the Age of Nahdah (Renaissance). The Translation Movement in the Arab Literary Reviews
Employee Engagement : Sporting goods retail stores in Gävle
Title: Employee Engagement - Sporting goods retail stores in Gävle. Level: Second cycle, Final assignment for Master Degree in Business Administration Author: Maria Claudia Sun Han Cordova and Camille Besnault Supervisor: Maria Fregidou-Malama and Pär Vilhelmson Date: 2013 - May Purpose: This study examines employee engagement. For that matter, we investigate the factors that influence employee engagement in sporting goods retail stores, and the impact of relationships interactions between the team and the manager. Method: This study was conducted through a deductive approach. The data was collected from two sporting goods retail stores: Stadium and Intersport, located in Gävle, Sweden; through questionnaires for both store’s employees, and face-to-face interviews to the store managers and employees. Finally, data was analyzed with the programs Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Result & Conclusions: We found out that sporting goods retail store’s employees were mainly motivated by personal factors, job satisfaction factors and intrinsic factors, such as belongingness to the team. It appears that employees give significance importance to the relationship they have with their manager and coworkers. We also found out that the relationship with the customers has a huge impact on employee engagement. Suggestions for future research: This research was conducted in a geographic area in a specific country (Sweden). Additionally, it is based on the sporting goods retail market. Thus, it could be interesting to extend this research to others sectors and markets, or to do the same research in another country. Contribution of the thesis: While theories about employee engagement consider the relationship between employees and co-workers, and employees and manager as important for employee engagement, we empirically discovered that the relationship between employees and customers influences employee engagement significantly. Key words: Job satisfaction, employee engagement, sporting goods retails, motivation, relationships
The watercolors copies of Etruscan tomb painting in the Museum of Etruscan and Italic Antiquities at the Sapienza University of Rome. The copies of the Etruscan tomb paintings preserved at the Museo delle Antichità Etrusche e Italiche, Sapienza University of Rome, were purchased in the 1950s by Massimo Pallottino from Francesca Fioroni Barlanti, daughter of the first owner, Vincenzo Fioroni. They have formed part of the collection of the university museum since its foundation in 1955. The 61 panels, which relate to the 24 tombs of Tarquinia, the Tomba della Scimmia of Chiusi and the Tomba Golini I of Orvieto, have remained unpublished to date. With regard to the Tarquinia series, it is believed that they were drafted between 1911 and 1912, based on the application of the newly developed technique of using photographic reproductions to support the work of copyists. The otherwise unknown Elio D’Alessandris is recorded as the painter of these works in the archive documents, as is his relationship with the Roman Academy of Fine Arts, although the nature of this relationship is not specified. The author of the copies of the tombs at Chiusi and Orvietto has, on the other hand, still not been identified. The importance of the Sapienza Museum series stems from the fact that it records the complete inventory of painted tombs known in Tarquinia at the beginning of the twentieth century
Abstract: The paper analyses the poem “Os dias de então”, by Claudia Roquette-Pinto (Margem de manobra, 2005, p. 85-86) from the point of view of dramatic monologue genre, based on Jane Roche-Jaques (2020) and Shira Wolosky (2001). Voice fictionalization processes (COMBE, 2009/2010), just as lyric addressment (CULLER, 2015; SERMET, 2019) are also considered in order to understand the effects of the orchestrated voices in the poem. There is a leading voice in “Os dias de então”, identified as Zelda Fitzgerald’s by the author. Zelda’s speech was translated and adapted by Roquette-Pinto from a part of a letter to Scott Fitzgerald. The languor and tenderness of this subjective voice in prose is crossed by other voices in verse which are impersonal, anonymous and bring up violent content. The reader testifies subterranean links between the leading voice and the other utterances through brutality and impact, in the poem’s bigger arrangement. Such links and references are rarefied and unstable, which is often noted in Claudia Roquette-Pinto’s poetry. Biographic information (MILFORD, 2013; BRYER et al, 2002) and confluences between lettering and lyric genres (SILVA, 2002; ADORNO, 2003) are brought up in the article in order to understand the arrangement of utterance articulation, as well as the social construct that moved them. Keywords: dramatic monologue; lyric addressment; contemporary poetry; voice; Claudia Roquette-Pinto
Abstract: Volto Semana que Vem (I’ll be back next week) is a book of memoirs in which Maria Pilla, an author from Rio Grande do Sul, builds a fragmented narrative based on her life story and political activism, imprisonment and exile, going through Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Cincinnati, Paris, and Buenos Aires. Arranged by dates, the fragments go back and forth between different regions and periods, establishing spatial and temporal connections to the many lives that were interrupted by acts of political intolerance and violence that made their presence felt in Brazil and Latin America from the 1950s to the 1990s. Placed somewhere in between personal and collective narrative, this exile marked mobility gives us an opportunity to pay attention to the openness of space and time (deterritorialization/anachronism) and suggests that the intervals between these displacements show, at the same time, past and future in “their/our” present wish for reparation. Keywords: Memory; Dictatorship; Anachronism; Fiction; History; Maria Pilla
