Large transformations with moderate strains of tensile membrane structures
Beatini, Valentina/0000-0002-6916-9897; Royer Carfagni, Gianni/0000-0003-4879-9846Using a classical non-linear theory, we analytically investigate possible ways for transforming the shape of a curved elastic membrane while keeping it tensioned and moderately strained. This is a critical issue because, as a rule, membranes must be considerably stretched in order to avoid wrinkling and slackening. If the final configuration is fixed, the membrane can be cut and formed according to the final shape, but this cannot be done if more configurations, considerably distant from one another, have to be achieved. Nevertheless, we propose large transformation movements that can be obtained starting from flat membranes while maintaining their strain as limited. We discuss in detail the paradigmatic example of the hyperbolic-paraboloid-shaped membrane. These opportunities are suitable for applications of transformable architecture because they do not require excessive tensioning, compatible with the strength of materials used for this kind of structures.Italian "Dipartimento della Protezione Civile" under project ReLUIS-DPCThe author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: G.R.C. acknowledges the partial support of the Italian "Dipartimento della Protezione Civile" under project ReLUIS-DPC 2014-2018
The Gap between Research and Practice: Achieving Effective In-Service Training for Teachers Working with EBD Students
A Study of the Concurrent Validity between the Boxall Profile and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire
The aim of the study is to establish the level of concurrent validity between the Boxall Profile, a diagnostic instrument used by teachers and teaching assistants in nurture groups, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, a widely used screening instrument in the fields of education, mental health and social work. 202 children and adolescents attending nurture groups in England, aged 3-14 years, participated in the study. . These consisted of142 boys and 60 girls and came from 25 schools in 8 LEAs. School staff completed the Boxall Profile and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for all pupils. . The results show a high degree of concordance between the two instruments, with both measures appearing to identify similar behavioural characteristics in the same children. Scores in specific domains of the Boxall Profile are shown to predict performance on particular sub-scales of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. These preliminary findings support the validity claims of the Boxall Profile, indicating that it is a reliable tool for both diagnostic and research purposes
Jean Royer, a ’minor candidate’? The presidential campaign of the mayor of Tours (April–May 1974)
As the mayor of Tours (1959–1995), a deputy for Indre-et-Loire (1958–1973, 1976–1997), and a former minister (1973–1974), Jean Royer came fourth in the first round of the 1974 presidential election. He was both the most minor of the major partisan candidates, and the most prominent of the minor candidates. Distancing himself from party politics and claiming the legacy of General de Gaulle, Royer distinguished himself by his conservative discourse and campaign themes against a wider backdrop of major social reforms. His presidential campaign was first and foremost a personal adventure supported by a small team. His low score did not allow him to weigh in during national political debates, but he did manage to find a place in the political mediasphere. His campaign was marked by its focus on moral issues, its defence of shopkeepers and craftsmen, and the constant heckling his speeches received. As the author of a law on supermarkets and hypermarkets, Jean Royer had a much greater influence at the local level than at the national level, thus embodying a political current which figures like Philippe de Villiers, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, and Christine Boutin would later inherit
Una filosofia prima della filosofia. Royer-Collard, Jouffroy, Cousin
Focusing
on the debate with conservative counterrevolution on the one hand and the revolutionary
philosophy of the subject on the other, French liberalism in the first half of the
XIX century (Royer-Collard, Jouffroy, Cousin) proposed not a philosophy of politics
but, rather, a politics of philosophy with a view to stabilizing postrevolutionary society.
In reconstructing this politics of philosophy, the Author concentrates on the
rehabilitation of philosophy as rational discourse (against the counterrevolution), on
the recovery of the networks of social knowledge produced by common sense (against
the philosophy of the Revolution) and, above all, on the theory of impersonal reason
developed at the Sorbonne after its reopening at the beginning of the Restauration. The
philosophy of the doctrinarians is presented as a crucial moment in the strategy of a
«governmental liberalism» of the kind that French liberals were aiming for
FILOSOFIA, POLITICA E MORALE NEL PENSIERO DI PIERRE PAUL ROYER-COLLARD (1763-1845)
This work presents an analysis of the philosophical and the political thought of Pierre Paul Royer-Collard (1763-1845), a politician and intellectual who lived during the French Restoration and the July’s Monarchy.
I have traced an intellectual biography of the author, to show the influence of his different experiences as a public man (deputy, professor, State counsellor) on the construction and the development of his thought.
His philosophical and political ideas have been considered from the intellectual context of their creation, and analysed in all their parts and purposes.
His theory of perception has been accurately traced, as well as his idea of common sense, his critiques to the philosophy of the idéologues and the place of his thought in the French spiritualism.
All the elements of his political thought have been analysed: his idea of the institutions (King, government, Chambers), the electoral system, the intermediate powers, the Church, the education system, his idea of representative government, of democracy, of legitimacy, and of the relationship between politic and society. The legacy of the French Revolution and the political thought of Royer-Collard has also been considered. A comparative analysis, with the thought of Guizot and the French Doctrinaires to find the proper place of his political ideas in the context of the French Liberalism of the Doctrinaires, has also been done.
The moral inspiration of his conceptual system, which is bound between his philosophy and his political ideas, has been accurately analysed
« Lugubres démêlés des trois couleurs [...] sous le régime de la liberté » ou le plaidoyer de Barbault-Royer, 1796
International audienceBarbault Royer, a dedicated journalist and fervent republican, became embroiled in the political controversies surrounding the colonial issue during the Directory period, with the publication of his testimony titled Du gouvernement de Saint-Domingue, de Laveaux, de Villatte, des agents du Directoire (1796). This text is particularly illuminating on the "color prejudice" that developed in the Caribbean. The author, a man of color, condemns the brutalities and even crimes committed against the "mûlatre" community of Saint-Domingue. How are his fervent belief in Liberty and ideal of republican integration shaken by the realities on the ground?
Avalanching of the dune face: field observations and equilibrium theory
A field experiment to study dune erosion was conducted on the Sand Engine near Kijkduin, the Netherlands, from November 7th 2021 to January 7th 2022. Two artificial unvegetated dunes were constructed near the high water line, and experienced significant erosion through avalanching during three storms. This paper aims to identify what drives dune erosion through avalanching by using the collected data and equilibrium theory. Results suggest that the cumulative volume eroded through avalanching during a single high water is positively correlated with the profile mismatch between the pre-storm profile and a ‘storm equilibrium profile’, described by a 2/3rd power law, an empirical coefficient A, and the total water level. This mismatch is quantified by calculating the area integral of the profile that is acquired when the upper 35 m of the pre-storm profile is subtracted from the upper 35 m of the equilibrium profile. Avalanching commences when this mismatch becomes larger than approximately 0, after which 1 m3/m of sediment erodes from the dune face for every 3 m3/m mismatch. In addition, during one event avalanching occurred even though the elevation of the total water level did not exceed the initial elevation of the dune toe. This implies that a total water level that exceeds the initial elevation of the dune toe is not a requisite for avalanching and a collision regime to occur, which contradicts conventional definitions of dune erosion regimes. These results have implications on risk assessment of storm conditions on dune erosion.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Coastal EngineeringEnvironmental Fluid Mechanic
