    Quarantine Architecture

    No full text
The deadly COVID-19 virus is wreaking havoc throughout the globe. In the past two years, architects had to rethink certain forms of spatial organization to contain the spread of the pandemic. This thesis explores how pandemics and deadly diseases were dealt with and shows the forgotten design principles of the past. To prevent infectious diseases from coming ashore and affecting cities, several institutions were established throughout the Netherlands. Quarantine stations are created as architectural representations of isolation with impenetrable areas at a country entrance. This leads to the main question adressed in this thesis: How were Dutch quarantine stations for humans organized from a geographical and architectural point of view? This study first looks at the origin of quarantine stations. Furthermore, research is done into the legislation and policy in the Netherlands. This part explains the reason for building Quarantine Stations in the Netherlands. Finally, Quarantine Station Heijplaat and two additional Dutch stations are researched as a case study.AR2A011Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Upscaling Dementia Architecture: A study about aging in place with dementia

    No full text
Despite the predicted increase in the number of dementia patients, the Dutch government has opted against building any extra nursing facilities in the future. Individuals, families, healthcare institutions, and society as a whole may suffer as a result of persons with dementia remaining in their homes or neighborhoods that are unsuitable for their needs.Making existing neighborhoods dementia-friendly will result in a safe and inclusive living environment, which is required to accommodate the rising number of dementia patients and avoid future issues. Architectural solutions and small-scale initiatives can help reduce the progression of dementia and enhance the quality of life. Meaningful and supportive settings in neighborhoods or households improve health. Giving people environmental control and fostering strong communal bonds positively impacts their well-being. Implementing these procedures guarantees that the elderly with dementia can live in their own homes for as long as possible.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

    No full text
Purpose The study aimed to evaluate the possible preventive effect of two concentrations (3 and 5% w/w) of Eugenia jambolana (EJ) extract against 5-FU-induced mucositis. Method Sixteen adult rats were separated into four groups: two control and two preventive groups. Animals in Groups 1, 2, and 3 were injected intraperitoneally with 60 mg/kg/day of 5-FU on Day 1 followed by 150 mg/kg/day on Day 5. The rats in Group 4 (negative control) were given physiological saline at the same times and doses. Furthermore, on the fifth day of the study, the cheek and sublingual mucosa were irritated by external superficial scratches using the tip of an 18-G needle, followed by the application 15 mu L of 20% acetic acid, after which 3 and 5% EJ w/w gels were applied topically for animals in Groups 2 and 3, respectively. Results The weight and the mucositis scores were recorded. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory markers and biochemical tests were analyzed. Significant differences were found between the study groups in weight loss, clinical mucositis scores, mortality rates, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory parameters. Conclusion The preventive effect of 3% gel was significant, with no mortality rate, making it an option for preventive strategies

In this study, Tarık Buğra's stories were discussed in terms of expression techniques and it is consisted of two main parts. At the begining part; The writer's life, storytelling and works are analyzed. The training environment, education and art life are basic elements which are determined the quality of the works. Moreover, this chapter, based on author's monographic studies on his life and his interviews with him. For that reason it is very significant in terms of getting some clues about writing attitude. His life and environment are effective on attitudes against nature and universe. The Author shows that he is contacted with history, futurity, objects and relationship with people in his works and it has impact on expression, wording and writing technique. In the second part, we examined author's 57 stories one by one in terms of narrative techniques. However, we preferred to give an examples from the stories under expression techniques instead of opening a subheading for each story therefore this section's subtitles are constituted narrative techniques. We have found that Tarık Buğra has benefited from total of ten (10) expression techniques in his stories and these techniques are demonstrated by examples for how to using and it is exhibited an electic attitude at the same time. Key Words: Tarık Buğra, expression(narrative) techniques, Story(Works)

Impact of high-concentration office-type bleaching agent on physical properties of different types of bulk-fill composites

    No full text
Abstract Background This study investigated the effect of a 45% carbamide peroxide-containing office-type bleaching agent on the microhardness (MH) and surface roughness (SR) of flowable and paste-type bulk-fill composite resins. Methods This study used two bulk-fill composite resins, 3 M Filtek Bulk-Fill (paste) and Estelite Bulk-Fill Flow (flowable). Twenty disc-shaped specimens were prepared and divided into two groups according to the type of bulk-fill materials. All samples were stored at room temperature for 24 h with artificial saliva. Initial MH and surface SR values were measured. High-concentration office-type (HCOT) bleaching agent was applied to the samples for 30 min, and then the same procedure was repeated after one week. Following completion of bleaching procedures, final MH and surface SR values were evaluated. The MH values were analyzed by ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests was used for SR values with a significance of 0.05. Results A statistically significant difference was found between the MH values of the groups before and after bleaching (p = .002). SR value of 3 M Filtek Bulk-Fill was found statistically higher than Estelite Bulk-Fill Flow after or before bleaching treatment. Statistically significant difference was found SR value of 3 M Filtek Bulk-Fill when compared to before and after bleaching procedures (p = .024). Conclusions Bleaching with high-concentration office-type material significantly reduced the MH of both bulk-fill composites. While HCOT was applied, Estelite Bulk-Fill Flow did not cause a significant change in surface SR. In contrast, the SR value of 3 M Filtek Bulk-Fill was statistically higher. Therefore, if bleaching with a high-concentration office-type bleaching material is planned, it is recommended not to use 3 M Filtek Bulk-Fill as a restorative material, or it may be recommended to renew existing composite resin restorations after bleaching treatment

Estimation of the Probability of Informed Trading Models Via an Expectation-Conditional Maximization Algorithm

    No full text
The estimation of the probability of informed trading (PIN) model and its extensions poses significant challenges owing to various computational problems. To address these issues, we propose a novel estimation method called the expectation-conditional-maximization (ECM) algorithm, which can serve as an alternative to the existing methods for estimating PIN models. Our method provides optimal estimates for the original PIN model as well as two of its extensions: the multilayer PIN model and the adjusted PIN model, along with its restricted versions. Our results indicate that estimations using the ECM algorithm are generally faster, more accurate, and more memory-efficient than the standard methods used in the literature, making it a robust alternative. More importantly, the ECM algorithm is not limited to the models discussed and can be easily adapted to estimate future extensions of the PIN model. © The Author(s) 2025.Hakan Bugra Erentug; Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAK, (122K637)Social Science Citation Inde

WRITING TIME FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THREE NOVELS: THE NOVEL OF YABAN, KUCUK AGA, YORGUN SAVASCI

    No full text
There are some elements in the novel. These elements are: the event, characters, place and time. The novel is a harmonious procession of these elements. The element of time is quite important. There is also a saying that the novel is an art of time. There are usually four different kinds of time in a novel The first one is the time in which the novel is actually ( physically) written. The second is the time of narration in which the story takes place. The third is the time of the narrator, and the fourth is the time of the reader in which a novel is read.. The time in which the events of the novel are taking place also reflects the intention of the author in the sense that the author portrays this specific time period through his or her own intentions. The novel is never free of such intentions therefore it is always bound to be understood along with the intention of the author. In this sense the time in which the author writes becomes quite crucial In the length of this study, three novels shall be discussed accordingly, which are: Yaban by Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoglu, Kucuk Aga by Tarik Bugra and Yorgun Savasci by Kemal Tahir
