Plumbing, electricity, acoustics : sustainable design methods for architecture / Norbert Lechner.
Includes index.xi, 289 pages :Discover sustainable methods for designing crucial building systems for architects.
This indispensable companion to Norbert Lechner's landmark volume Heating, Cooling, Lighting: Sustainable Design Methods for Architects, Third Edition completes the author's mission to coverall topics in the field of sustainable environmental control. It provides knowledge appropriate for the level of complexity needed at the schematic design stage and presents the most up-to-date information available in a concise, logical, accessible manner and arrangement. Although sustainability deals with many issues, those concerning energy and efficiency are the most critical, making an additional goal of this book one of providing architects with the skills and knowledge needed to create buildings that use electricity and water efficiently. Guidelines and rules-of-thumb are provided to help designers make their buildings use less energy, less water, and less of everything else to achieve their primary objectives.
In addition, this book:
Addresses ways to reduce electricity usage through more efficient lighting systems and appliances and by incorporating automatic switches and control systems that turn off systems not in use.
Covers the design of well-planned effluent treatment systems that protect against potential health hazards while also becoming a valuable source of reclaimed water and fertilizer
Provides coverage of fire protection and conveyance systems, including very efficient types of elevators and escalators and designs that encourage the use of stairs or ramps.
Complete with case studies that illustrate how these systems are incorporated into large-project plans, Plumbing, Electricity, Acoustics is an indispensable resource for any architect involved in a sustainable design project
The competitiveness of entrepreneurial firms from a network perspective
This book sheds light on how the competitiveness of entrepreneurial firms can be understood from a relational perspective. The relational perspective complements internally focused approaches to explain firm competitiveness. Through the review of publications of the author, it will be shown how the relational view extends the classic notion of strategic management and how different types of networks matter in time for the competitiveness of firms but also how the spatial distribution of relationships matter for firms. The latter leads also to an investigation of the nature of clusters and how they are born and developed but most importantly how differential firm performance within clusters can be explained (allowing firms to develop a competitive advantage). If we consider that the network model is relevant for the development of entrepreneurial firms, the question arises what the limits of this model are and what the consequences are for firm development. Moreover, while research stretches the positive effects of networks, the negative effects are somehow under-researched. Research is presented that sheds some light on network liabilities. Understanding networks as an organizational configuration, the perspective is extended to other organizational configurations that drive firm competitiveness: they include research on teams as sub-units and small business groups. Concluding remarks will finally link the idea of competitive advantage to entrepreneurship
This article examines one of the central approaches
in Norbert Lechner’s theory, who was
one of the most emblematic intellectuals in
Latin America’s studies of political subjectivity.
Based on the diagnosis of a State crisis due to its
functioning as an instrument of domination, the
author conceives it as form and historical reason.
That is, as an imaginary referent that mediates
the social relations between everyday praxis
and institutionality. For him, it is in the microphysical
spaces where the hegemonic struggle,
which must be represented by a general interest,
unfolds. Without this mediation and ethical
content, the State becomes a simple reproductive
device of capitalist relations. Therefore, we
propose that the search for a historical perspective
within the conceptualization of the State
constitutes one of the bases that support Norbert
Lechner’s theory of political subjectivity.
The Old World and the New: Negotiating Past, Present, and Future in Anglo-American Humour, 1880-1900
BOB NICHOLSON, in a transatlantic comparison of late-Victorian usage of history in newspaper joke columns and comic novels, observes a struggle on the part of Britain to come to terms with America’s increasing economic and cultural superiority. Thus, joke writers and literary humorists tended to “juxtapose images of the American future with those of an idealised British past” and emphasised the “centrality of history to British national identity at a time when the country’s future was beginning to look increasingly uncertain.” This uncertainty may also be observed in the fact that British humorists turned to the past in the attempt to reaffirm British superiority, yet the popular reception of transatlantic humour at the same time indicates an acceptance of modern American culture in Britain
Serializing the Past in and out of the Leisure Hour: Historical Culture and the Negotiation of Media Boundaries
This article explores the media transfer between books and periodicals by example of historical narratives serialized within the Religious Tract Society’s family magazine Leisure Hour (1852-1905). A look at the travelling of texts and ideas between these two media shows that the RTS not only negotiated media boundaries but operated at the intersection of other categories, such as class and gender, linked to the reputation of the different media as well as modes of representation and approaches to history. In a combination of book history and periodical studies under a historical culture perspective, the article focuses on three case studies: (1) the transition from book into periodical serial and the (re)appropriation of history for a working-class audience; (2) the collection of a periodical series into book form and the author’s boundary-work under the regulation of the RTS; (3) the transfer of material features in the creation of monthly parts and shift in historical genre.
ultrasoundtransmission velocity of the alveoarbone at patients with dental implants
Ultrasound Transmission Velocity measurement on female patients with treated periodontal diseases and implants
R. Mengel, P. Hadji, P. Kann, B. Lechner
The aim of the clinical study on female patients with treated periodontal diseases and implants was the determination of the bone mineral density from mandibula and maxilla using a Ultrasound Transmission Velocity (UTV, DBM Sonic 1200, Italy) measurement. 20 edentulous patients with GAP and GCP (average age: 55,5 years, all non-smokers) got 74 implants (MK II, Nobel Biocare, Zürich, Swiss and Osseotite 3i, West Palm Beach, FL, USA) inserted. After integration of the implants’ superstructures the patients have been controlled in a 3-month-recall over a period of 2 to 5 years. In each session the clinical parameters on teeth and implants were recorded. Radiological check-ups with dental X-rays were made before implantation, after integration of the superstructures and 1, 3 and 5 years later. The determination of the bone mineral density was measured by UTV 3 years after integration of the superstructures and controlled by computerized X-ray densitometry, too. The clinical examination showed a loss of attachment of 0.15mm (teeth) and 0.41mm (implants) per year. The bone loss averaged out at 0.21 % (teeth) and at 0.15mm (implants) per year. UTV diagnostics gave hints of osteoporosis (1435 m/s) by two patients and of osteopenia (1516 m/s) by 4 women. The analogical Dual X-ray (DXA) values were T-scores ≤ -2.5 for osteporosis and T-scores -1.5 to -2.5 for osteopenia. The patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia showed no difference concerning clinical and radiological results on teeth and and implants in comparison to healthy patients. The UTV scores were compared to DXA-data statistically and showed good correlation. The intraoral measurement of Ultrasound Transmission Velocity seems to be a non invasive, sufficient alternative for bone density measurements of the alveolar ridge due to the high correspondency between the UTV and DXA data
