Ireneusz Kania : a man whose dharma is "gawking at the world"

    No full text
The subject of the essay is the author`s commentary on the selected texts of Ireneusz Kania and some interviews with him. These texts are included in the volume Metaphysical Debt. The commentary is limited to Buddhist threads. Ireneusz Kania frankly declares that Buddhist topics are very close to him and explicitly states that Buddhism provides the greatest knowledge about human nature and reality. Kania talks about himself that his dharma is "gawking at the world"; we can say that this becomes his individual path of knowledge

Philosophy of Western Music: A Contemporary Introduction

    No full text
This is the first comprehensive book-length introduction to the philosophy of Western music that fully integrates consideration of popular music and hybrid musical forms, especially song. Its author, Andrew Kania, begins by asking whether Bob Dylan should even have been eligible for the Nobel Prize in Literature, given that he is a musician. This motivates a discussion of music as an artistic medium, and what philosophy has to contribute to our thinking about music. Chapters 2-5 investigate the most commonly defended sources of musical value: its emotional power, its form, and specifically musical features (such as pitch, rhythm, and harmony). In chapters 6-9, Kania explores issues arising from different musical practices, particularly work-performance (with a focus on classical music), improvisation (with a focus on jazz), and recording (with a focus on rock and pop). Chapter 10 examines the intersection of music and morality. The book ends with a consideration of what, ultimately, music is.https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/mono/1147/thumbnail.jp

The relationship of meiotic checkpoint regulation, synapsis, and crossing over in Drosophila melanogaster

Proper chromosome segregation is achieved through three important meiotic events. The first is synapsis, where a proteinaceous structure, the synaptonemal complex (SC), forms between homologous chromosomes and juxtaposes them together. Then, recombination, which is initiated by programmed double strand breaks (DSBs) introduced into DNA that leads to a crossover event. Chiasmata, which are physical markers of where an exact exchange of genetic material occurred between homologous chromosomes during crossing over, are important to maintain the genetic integrity and variability of offspring. Zip3, a conserved meiotic protein found in budding yeast to humans, has been found to be required for crossing over. Furthermore, previous studies in budding yeast (Zip3) and C. elegans (ZHP-3) have shown the homologs to be crossover markers. However, the exact mechanism as to how Zip3 combines synapsis and recombination to promote crossing over is unknown. In Drosophila melanogaster, there are two homologs of Zip3, Zip3 related protein on the third and X chromosome (Z3rp3 and Z3rpX). Because Drosophila currently does not have a way to visualize crossovers, this study involves determining the function of Z3rp3 and Z3rpX during meiotic recombination and if they are crossover markers. HA-tagged transgenes were constructed to express the protein of each homolog. Z3rp3 HA and Z3rpX HA transgenes revealed an abnormal localization pattern, resulting in them not being good crossover markers. However, the transgenes displayed dominant negative effects on meiosis, indicating they had another important function on the process. Loss of function mutants created in z3rp3 and z3rpX showed that they not only had separate functions on the events of meiosis leading to proper chromosome segregation, but also that they seemed to be redundant, since the z3rpX z3rp3 double mutant exhibited the most severe phenotypes on synapsis, recombination, and crossing over. Overall, z3rp may be playing similar roles in the communication between SC formation and recombination events as in budding yeast and C. elegans, but in different contexts. Thus, I have results that provide new insights into the functional features of z3rp in Drosophila that confirms its role in crossing over.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Sanese Kania White-Brow

Ida I Dewa Agung Istri Kania: Raja, Feminisme, dan Pahlawan dari Klungkung

    No full text
The feminism movement in the field of classical literature in Bali is known to rise after a female au- thor struggling from the Dutch intervention. This female figure was Ida I Dewa Agung Istri Kania. She had compiled several literary works through her criticism and “lango”, either herself or accompanied by her pupils. The forms of her works are kakawin, kidung, geguritan, and tutur. The most popular work is Kakawin Pralambang Bhasa Wewatekan. This Kakawin tells about death body burning cere- mony (Patiwa-tiwa and Baligya). It describes the entrance of Dutch into Bali and the struggle to fight against in Kusamba, Klungkung. There is also a story concerning the memorandum of understanding between Klungkung, Gianyar, Bangli, and Payangan. These stories come along with several other sto- ries behind some factual events made in Kusamba, Sweta Lombok, Tabanan, as well as in Klungkung. It is very interesting that the phenomenal Ida I Dewa Agung Istri Kania is analyzed on the sociology of literature viewpoint. It is supposed to have significance for the younger and future generations, at least in Bali. The Balinese society must be proud of having their own hero, King, who is an author of the classical works. She is a mirror, figure to take as an example of nobleness for the nation, particularly the younger female generations

    No full text
A pension system is a crucial factor which shapes social and economic processes, because its aim is to provide income during retirement. This paper is concerned with pension systems in terms of the processes occurring during the accumulation and use of retirement capital in conditions of risk generated by financial and fiscal crises. The author aims to identify the impact of the effects of systemic risk on the implementation of pension system objectives and on the realisation of the idea of sustainable socio-economic development. Obstacles to achieving the goals of the pension system may lead to a substantial reduction in other state expenditures because of the need to satisfy the current financial needs at the expense of subsequent generations. Theoretical considerations are illustrated by empirical studies on the influence of the financial and fiscal crisis on the Polish pension system. For this purpose, financial data relating to pension funds and the public finance system for years 1999-2012 was used.Jan Kaczmarzyk: [email protected]; e-mail: Piotr Kania: [email protected] Jan Kaczmarzyk – Wydział Finansów i Ubezpieczeń, Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny w Katowicach; Dr Piotr Kania – Wydział Finansów i Ubezpieczeń, Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny w Katowicach;4(70)15016

It accompanies many diseases. This sensory experience is burdensome and significantly reduces the quality of life. The mechanism of itching is complex. It involves receptors, the histaminergic and non-histaminergic pathways, cytokines, neuropeptides, neurotransmitters, proteases, and enzymes. External factors such as temperature or capsaicin also influence itching. Aim of the study This review presents the current state of knowledge regarding therapy in the treatment of itching. Also aims to show that it is a complicated process. Pruritus is a very bothersome sensory sensation and is a common symptom. Material and methods This review was based on scientific books on human physiology and dermatology were used, which are listed in the bibliography and available data collected in the PubMed and Google Scholar database. Using key words: itch, management, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, pruritus, therapeutics, treatments. Conclusion The latest research on itching has led to a better understanding of this complex mechanism. As a result, there is a possibility of discovering new, innovative treatment methods that are targeted at specific elements of this process or work systemically. Understanding the broad etiology assists in identifying the cause and in implementing an appropriate therapeutic strategy. Further research will enable improvements in treatment and enhance patient comfort. Key words: itch, management, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, pruritus, therapeutics, treatments
