Environmental innovation and R&D cooperation: Empirical evidence from Spanish manufacturing firms

    No full text
This paper explores the relationship between firms’ R&D cooperation strategies and their propensity to introduce environmental innovations. Previous literature has supported that environmental innovations differ from other innovations as far as externalities and drivers of their introduction are concerned, highlighting mainly the importance of regulation to trigger them. Using data from the Community Innovation Survey on Spanish manufactur- ing firms (PITEC), this paper investigates specificities that affect rather how they are developed, and in particular the higher importance of R&D cooperation with external partners. The econometric estimations, controlling for selection bias, suggest that environmental innovative firms cooperate on innovation with external partners to a higher extent than other innovative firms. Furthermore, cooperation with suppliers, KIBS and universities is more relevant than for other innovators, whereas cooperation with clients does not seem to be differentially important. Finally, the results bespoke of a substitution effect between cooperation activities and the internal R&D effort

Rede CEDE

Editorial: Agrobiodiversity, Community Participation, and Landscapes in Agroecology

The current model of conventional agriculture on the planet, originated in the so-called “Green Revolution” (GR), has generated positive and negative effects during its more than 80 years of application, starting in the 1940s. Among the negative effects are the accelerated loss of biodiversity and agrobiodiversity. Different alternative farming systems propose managing the agrobiodiversity of agroecosystems (farms) to face many of the problems generated on monoculture farms (e.g., soil and genetic erosion, emergence of genetic resistance in pests and weeds, as well as public health problems associated with the use of agrochemicals), which are characteristic of the current conventional model (Vandermeer and Perfecto, 2005; Pollan, 2007)

Polynomial approximation on Lissajous curves in the d-cube

For a∈Z>0d we let la(t):=(cos⁡(a1t),cos⁡(a2t),⋯,cos⁡(adt)) denote an associated Lissajous curve. We study such Lissajous curves which have the quadrature property for the cube [−1,1]d that ∫[−1,1]dp(x)dμd(x)=∫0πp(la(t))dt for all polynomials p(x)∈V where V is either the space of d-variate polynomials of degree at most m or else the d-fold tensor product of univariate polynomials of degree at most m. Here dμd is the product Chebyshev measure (also the pluripotential equilibrium measure for the cube). Among such Lissajous curves with this property we study the ones for which maxp∈V⁡deg(p(la(t))) is as small as possible. In the tensor product case we show that this is uniquely minimized by g:=(1,(m+1),(m+1)2,⋯,(m+1)d−1). In the case of m=2n we construct discrete hyperinterpolation formulas which are easily evaluated with, for example, the Chebfun system ([6])

Johnson noise thermometers (JNT) measure the equilibrium electrical noise, proportional to thermodynamic temperature, of a sensing resistor. In the correlation method, the same resistor is connected to two amplifiers and a correlation of their outputs is performed, in order to reject amplifiers' noise. Such rejection is not perfect: the residual correlation gives a systematic error in the JNT reading. In order to set an upper limit, or to achieve a correction, for such error, a careful electrical modelling of the amplifiers and connections must be performed. Standard numerical simulation tools are inadequate for such modelling. In the literature, evaluations have been performed by the painstaking solving of analytical modelling. We propose an evaluation procedure for the JNT error due to residual correlations which blends analytical and numerical approaches, with the benefits of both: a rigorous and accurate circuit noise modelling, and a fast and flexible evaluation with a user-friendly commercial tool. The method is applied to a simple but very effective ultralow-noise amplifier employed in a working JN
