The Act of Translation : The Case of Juan Goytisolo's A Cock-Eyed Comedy

    No full text
What defines the act of literary translation is the striving towards a final version that will be published. This movement towards words on a page encompasses re-readings, multiple research, re-draftings and possible collaborations with author and publisher, all framed by contract, copyright and the inevitable deadline. In this paper, the tasks of the translator will be analysed in the context of a work-in-progress -my translation of a recent novel by Juan Goytisolo, A Cock- Eyed Comedy, to be published by Serpents Tail in September 2002. The paper will focus on the interpretive moves of the translator within a determining process of writing. The translator is not a depersonalised subject but a critical, historical and emotional subjectivity. The different layers of consciousness are above all galvanised by the re-creation of the original text: a musical, verbal architecture whose making is no adequately captured by most of the concepts currently in vogue within Translation Studies.

Occupying the museum: Denkmal 53 at Tate Modern

One of two major essays in the two volume catalogue of the recent work of the Belgian artist Jan de Cock. It makes a study of the large installations at Tate Modern, summer 2005 using the Freudian concept of object-cathexis in order to analyse the work’s libidinous and aggressive attachment to the museum as an institution and as a specific set of spaces. It compares de Cock’s strategies to those of Donald Judd and Marcel Broodthers. This essay is significant for showing how the concept of cathexis can be widely applied across architecture and sculpture. It is original in the sense that it is the only existing analysis of de Cock’s work to use a psychoanalytic methodology. It is executed with rigour in that the essay stems from discussions between the author and the artist that were modelled on clinical psychoanalytic practice. There is also a high degree of originality through input from the author and the artist, particularly in the way in which the text is located throughout the book as an ‘unconscious text’, that appears in all the other texts on de Cock’s work, and then wraps around the cover of the book to name it, before returning to the status of subtext (thus the 127 pages). The book is a unique and highly creative encounter between author and artists that initiates new forms of expression and dialogue to graphically and temporally capture the ‘pulsation of the unconscious’ (Lacan, Four Fundamentals of Psychoanalysis). This process opens up the text to visual and spatial displacements that act as homologues to the functioning of the conscious and unconscious ambitions of the artist. Cutting'aesthetic teeth' : Flannery O'Connor's habit of art

Assessment of habitat suitability for the globally threatened Cock-tailed Tyrant Alectrurus tricolor (Passeriformes: Tyrannidae)

Corresponding author: Pier Cacciali; Email: [email protected] Tyrant Alectrurus tricolor (Vieillot, 1816), a Vulnerable South American grassland specialist, is facing substantial habitat loss due to land-use change by agricultural and forestry expansion. This study aims to assess the current distribution and suitable habitat availability for Cock-tailed Tyrant using species distribution modelling (SDM) and recent distributional data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Occurrence data from 1,583 records, mapped by season and habitat type, were used to generate a MaxEnt model with a high predictive accuracy (AUC = 0.974). Results revealed three main distributional clusters: one in Brazil, another spanning Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina, and a separate group in the Bolivian lowlands. Seasonal analysis found no significant distributional shifts, supporting previous findings of the species’ non-migratory behaviour. Key environmental contributors to habitat suitability included ecoregion type, precipitation, and vapour pressure. The predicted suitable habitat covers approximately 177,753 km². These findings underscore the urgent need for conservation efforts focusing on critical grassland habitats, particularly within the Cerrado, Southern Cone Mesopotamian grasslands, and Beni savanna biomes. Sustainable land-use practices, grassland restoration, and periodic habitat reassessments are essential to preserve Cock-tailed Tyrant populations and support the biodiversity of South American grasslands. Contains fulltext : 76506.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)This dissertation starts with a critical analysis of the scientific projects with signing chimpanzees, which were set up to see if chimpanzees could learn a human language. These projects consist of the research by the Gardners, the Fouts and the Terrace group. After the results of these projects are presented, the problems of setup, method and interpretation of which this type of research suffered, are discussed. Then a new study is presented in full detail about the recent signing behaviour of these chimpanzees. It was carried out by the author with the famous signing chimpanzees at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute of Central Washington University, among whom the well-known chimpanzee Washoe. Four videotaped corpora from 1992 to 1999 consisting of 3,448 chimpanzee sign utterances were examined. These were analyzed with regard to the individual signs the chimpanzees used, the combinations of signs that they made, and the communicative intentions underlying each chimpanzee sign utterance. The results of this study were as follows. The chimpanzees predominantly used object and action signs. There was no evidence for semantic or syntactic structure in combinations of signs. Longer combinations showed repetition and stringing of object and action signs. The chimpanzees mostly signed with an acquisitive motivation. Requests for objects and actions were the predominant communicative intentions of the sign utterances, though naming and answering also occurred. This recent sign use shows multiple differences with (early) human language. The Discussion of the dissertation presents the implications of this study for the nature of the signing of apes and for ape language research in general. The chimpanzee sign use is also compared with the use of lexigrams by the bonobo Kanzi.KU-Nijmegen, 17 april 2003Promotor : Derksen, A.A. Co-promotor : Cock Buning, T. de603 p
