Hospital de día en contexto de pandemia por COVID-19: experiencias de adolescentes asistiendo a intervenciones grupales telemáticas
Objective: To explore the experience of adolescent users of the day hospital who were part of the telematic adaptation of the usual group interventions of the day hospital. Background: Day Hospitals are specialized outpatient facilities whose objective is to stabilize the user through intensive treatment while remaining in their family or community. In Chile, there are not enough day hospitals. One way of expanding the coverage is telematic care, which also is adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. However, there are no studies on telematic day hospital services in Chile. Material and Methods: ten users participated in the study (out of 13 users of the intervention). We conducted semi-structured interviews and self-administered surveys between August 2020 and January 2021. Content Analysis was used to analyze the interviews, and the surveys were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: Positive social interactions were particularly valued by the participants (with both peers and therapists). There is a general perception of having improved socioemotional skills and mood. Telematic implementation was considered satisfactory by most participants, and they proposed incorporating more activities to promote deeper interactions with their peers. Conclusion: The core elements of this intervention would be the perception of social support (a possible therapeutic mechanism) and the feeling of having improved social skills and mood (possible primary outcome).Objetivo: explorar la experiencia de adolescentes usuarios del hospital de día que fueron parte de la adaptación telemática de las intervenciones grupales habituales de dicho hospital.
The potter’s skill : perceptions of workmanship in the English ceramic industries, 1760-1800
This thesis focuses on perceptions of workmanship in the English porcelain
and earthenware industries between 1760 and 1800. Research by Berg and
Clifford has demonstrated a new interest in and valuation of workmanship
by contemporaries in the eighteenth century. Yet little is known of what
contemporaries understood workmanship to mean, or be. This thesis
argues that understandings of workmanship affected both the consumption
and production practices of eighteenth-century contemporaries. It does so
by concentrating on six groups of people – industrial tourists, consumers,
retailers, designers, manufacturers and workers. It demonstrates the
different ways in which contemporaries perceived hand skills and tacit
knowledge by examining a range of sources such as letters, prints, trade
cards, travel accounts and objects.
This thesis concludes that meanings of ‘workmanship’ - that combination of
effort, work and skill - were shifting in the second half of the eighteenth
century. For those not employed in manufacturing, reading manuals,
seeing production in action and handling objects all challenged their ideas
of workmanship. These experiences encouraged contemporaries to
question the meaning of innovative products and the manufacturing
techniques used to make them. Similarly, in manufacturing the
development of the design process and the demands of novelty and
standardisation forced manufacturers, designers and modellers to ask how
to achieve ‘excellent workmanship’. At the same time, workers understood
and valued their work in different terms – as a hard-won, social and
physical skill. This thesis argues that for eighteenth-century contemporaries
‘workmanship’ was a complex idea, under challenge from developments in
production and consumption. In so doing it moves the interlinked history
of manufacturing and consumption away from the extant debates of
economic historians and into a different sub-disciplinary space, namely
cultural history; a space that has tended to neglect the cultural aspects of
production
Today’s business landscape requires that companies constantly experiment with their product development and marketing to adapt to an increased digitalization. Companies unable to meet their costumers needs, risk being outcompeted by companies able to actualize growth. In order to survive, startups are faced with the challenge of generating a high growth rate. Due to these circumstances, startups are striving to apply alternative marketing strategies. Growth Hacker Marketing, comprising of creative marketing, experimentation and engineering, has proven itself an effective strategy to generate rapid growth within the tech-industry, Yet, in the academic world, there is limited discussion on the topic. Thus, the purpose of the thesis is to develop an understanding of the strategy and how it differs from traditional ways of executing marketing. The author will take part in interviews with four respondents currently performing the strategy to provide an integrated view on: How does Growth Hacker Marketing differ from traditional ways of executing marketing? To get a deeper understanding of the strategy, the thesis includes an application case presenting conditions a startup is required to pay attention to, in order to apply the strategy successfully. At the end, a statement of how Growth Hacker Marketing differ from traditional ways of executing marketing is presented
A multi-stage genome-wide association study of bladder cancer identifies multiple susceptibility loci.
We conducted a multi-stage, genome-wide association study of bladder cancer with a primary scan of 591,637 SNPs in 3,532 affected individuals (cases) and 5,120 controls of European descent from five studies followed by a replication strategy, which included 8,382 cases and 48,275 controls from 16 studies. In a combined analysis, we identified three new regions associated with bladder cancer on chromosomes 22q13.1, 19q12 and 2q37.1: rs1014971, (P = 8 × 10⁻¹²) maps to a non-genic region of chromosome 22q13.1, rs8102137 (P = 2 × 10⁻¹¹) on 19q12 maps to CCNE1 and rs11892031 (P = 1 × 10⁻⁷) maps to the UGT1A cluster on 2q37.1. We confirmed four previously identified genome-wide associations on chromosomes 3q28, 4p16.3, 8q24.21 and 8q24.3, validated previous candidate associations for the GSTM1 deletion (P = 4 × 10⁻¹¹) and a tag SNP for NAT2 acetylation status (P = 4 × 10⁻¹¹), and found interactions with smoking in both regions. Our findings on common variants associated with bladder cancer risk should provide new insights into the mechanisms of carcinogenesis
The Legacy of Iconoclasm: religious war and the relic landscape of Tours, Blois and Vendôme, 1550-1750
This study explores the process of physically rebuilding, renewing and reinventing the relic landscape in the regions around Tours, Blois and Vendôme following the widespread iconoclastic damage of the French religious wars. The author takes a long-term perspective exploring developments over two hundred years, from the mid-sixteenth through to the mid-eighteenth centuries. The book explores what the physical renewal of the landscape can tell us about evolving beliefs and practices concerning relics during the Catholic Reformation and what reconstruction activities reveal about the meaning and experience of relic veneration. It pays particular attention to how the relic landscape evolved through relic translations and how communities that oversaw relic shrines remembered the iconoclastic acts of the religious wars through liturgical and ritual commemorations, memorials, artistic renderings, oral traditions and written accounts.Publisher PD
Author Correction: Burdens of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease attributable to sugar-sweetened beverages in 184 countries (Nature Medicine, (2025), 10.1038/s41591-024-03345-4)
Correction to: Nature Medicinehttps://doi.org/10.1038/s41591-024-03345-4, published online 6 January 2025. In the version of the article initially published, in the eighth paragraph of the Discussion, the text “Among large nations, the largest increases in SSB-related T2D burdens were in Mexico, Thailand and the United Kingdom, and in CVD burdens, Colombia, Nigeria, Thailand and Russia. These changes align with rises in SSB consumption in these nations12. Similarly, declining SSB-related cardiometabolic burdens in Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom (for CVD) are consistent with their decreasing SSB consumption from 1990 to 202012” was incorrect and has now been updated to “Among largely populated nations, the largest increases in SSB-related T2D incidence was in Colombia, USA and Argentina; and in CVD incidence, Nigeria, Russia, Colombia and Thailand. These changes generally align with rises in SSB consumption in these nations, except in the US where slight declines in SSB consumption were offset by increased burdens of diabetes 12. Similarly, declining SSB-related cardiometabolic burdens in Turkey, Brazil, and the United States and the United Kingdom for CVD are consistent with their decreasing SSB consumption from 1990 to 202012.” Additionally, Supplementary Data 1 and 2 have been updated to remove decimals in values greater than 100. These corrections have been made to the HTML and PDF versions of the article. © The Author(s) 2025
Endogenous circulating sex hormone concentrations and colon cancer risk in postmenopausal women: a prospective study and meta-analysis
Background
Observational studies have consistently reported that postmenopausal hormone therapy use is associated with lower colon cancer risk. However, epidemiological studies examining the associations between circulating concentrations of endogenous estrogens and colorectal cancer have reported inconsistent results.
Methods
We investigated the associations between circulating concentrations of estrone, estradiol, free estradiol, testosterone, free testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), progesterone, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) with colon cancer risk in a nested case–control study of 1,028 postmenopausal European women (512 colon cancer cases, 516 matched controls) who were non-current users of exogenous hormones at blood collection. Multivariable conditional logistic regression models were used to compute odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the association between circulating sex hormones and colon cancer risk. We also conducted a dose-response meta-analysis of prospective studies of circulating estrone and estradiol with colorectal, colon, and rectal cancer risk in postmenopausal women. All statistical tests were 2-sided.
Results
In the multivariable model, a non-statistically significant positive relationship was found between circulating estrone and colon cancer risk (OR per log2-1 unit increment = 1.17, 95%CI = 1.00–1.38; ORquartile4-quartile1 = 1.33, 95%CI = 0.89–1.97, Ptrend = 0.20). Circulating concentrations of estradiol, free estradiol, testosterone, free testosterone, androstenedione, DHEA, progesterone, and SHBG were not associated with colon cancer risk. In the dose-response meta-analysis, no clear evidence of associations were found between circulating estradiol, and estrone concentrations with colorectal, colon, and rectal cancer risk.
Conclusion
Our observational and meta-analysis results do not support an association between circulating concentrations of endogenous sex hormones and colon or rectal cancer in postmenopausal women
FUN Azores: a FUNctional Trait Database for the Meio-, Macro-, and Megafauna From the Azores Marine Park (Mid-Atlantic Ridge)
Trait-based approaches that complement taxonomy-based studies have increased in popularity among the scientific community over the last decades. The collection of biological and ecological characteristics of species (i.e., traits) provides insight into species and ecosystem vulnerability to environmental and anthropogenic changes, as well as ecosystem functioning. Here, we present the FUN Azores trait database, describe our approach, evaluate its scope, compare it to other marine trait databases, and explore the spatial distribution of its traits with “functional maps.” While most of the available trait databases to date contain essential information to understand the functional diversity of a taxonomic or functional group, our ecosystem-based approach provides a comprehensive assessment of diverse fauna (i.e., meio-, macro-, and megafauna) from benthic and pelagic environments in the Azores Marine Park; including ridges, seamounts, hydrothermal vents, and the overlying water column. We used a collaborative approach involving 30 researchers with different expertise to develop the FUN Azores database, which contains compiled data on 14 traits representing morphological, behavioral, and life history characteristics for 1,210 species across 10 phyla. The “functional maps” show a distinct distribution of the two most common size classes, suggesting different communities with different functionalities. The following traits had the best scoring coverage (i.e., \u3e95% of OPEN ACCESS EDITED BY Peter Convey, British Antarctic Survey (BAS), United Kingdom REVIEWED BY Sarah Faulwetter, University of Patras, Greece Kai Horst George, Senckenberg am Meer Wilhelmshaven, Germany *CORRESPONDENCE Neus Campanyà-Llovet [email protected] RECEIVED 21 September 2022 ACCEPTED 29 May 2023 PUBLISHED 27 July 2023 CITATION Campanyà-Llovet N, Bates AE, Cuvelier D, Giacomello E, Catarino D, Gooday AJ, Berning B, Figuerola B, Malaquias MAE, Moura CJ, Xavier JR, Sutton TT, Fauconnet L, Ramalho SP, Neves BdM, Machado GM, Horton T, Gebruk AV, Minin K, Bried J, Molodtsova T, Silva MA, Dilman A, Kremenetskaia A, Costa EFS, Clarke J, Martins HR, Pham CK, Carreiro-Silva M and Colaço A (2023) FUN Azores: a FUNctional trait database for the meio-, macro-, and megafauna from the Azores Marine Park (Mid-Atlantic Ridge).
