This work has two main objectives. First, it launches an interpretation on the main routes that two black authors from the Caribbean took; Oliver C. Cox and C. L. R. James. For this task, a contrast is made between the initial life of the authors, whose period is marked by their birth in the British colony of Trinidad, in the Caribbean, in 1901 until the publication of their magnum opi; 1948 for Cox, and 1938 for James. The second objective is, by debating with sociological tendencies directed to the study of intellectual trajectories, to argue in defense of the utility of working with categories that place the displacements derived from racial experience – and their resulting dysfunctions – at the beginning of sociological explanation, and not at the end as residues or events. At last, is by taking this into consideration that the article looked for explanations about the disparity of social destinies in both authors, among the links between their social experiences and the kinds of interventions they proposed.
Simultaneous Golgi-Cox and immunofluorescence using confocal microscopy
Visualization of neuronal elements is of fundamental
importance in modern neuroscience. Golgi-Cox
impregnation is a widely employed method that provides
detailed information about morphological characteristics of
neurons, but none regarding their neurochemical features.
Immunocytochemical procedures, on the other hand, can
provide a high degree of biochemical specificity but poorer
morphological details, in particular if compared to Golgi-
Cox impregnation. Hence, the combined use of these two
approaches is highly desirable, especially for confocal
microscopy that can exploit the advantages of both methods
simultaneously. Here we show an innovative procedure
of perfusion and fixation of brain tissue, that allows, by
applying Golgi-Cox impregnation and immunofluorescence
in the same histological section, to obtain high-quality histological material, with a very simple and inexpensive
method. This procedure is based on three simple fixation
steps: (1) a paraformaldehyde perfusion followed by a standard post-fixation to stabilize the subsequent immunofluorescence reaction; (2) the classical Golgi-Cox impregnation and (3) an immunofluorescence reaction in previously impregnated material. This combination allows simultaneous visualization of (a) the structural details (Golgi-Cox impregnated neurons), (b) the antigens’ characterization, (c) the anatomical interactions between discrete neuronal elements and (d) the 3D reconstruction and modeling. The method is easy to perform and can be reproducibly applied by small laboratories and expanded through the use of different antibodies. Overall, the method presented in this study offers an innovative and powerful approach to study the nervous system, especially by using confocal microscopy
Facial Uplift: Plastic Surgery, Cosmetics, and the Retailing of Whiteness in the Work of Maria Cristina Mena
This article analyzes how Mexican American author María Cristina Mena’s short magazine fiction boldly illustrates the emerging U.S. beauty industry as effectively producing whiteness for sale in the neocolonial marketplace. Her representations of Mexican women’s use of cosmetics articulate how the beauty industry both lends structure to and is structured by the idea of race; at the same time, she reminds her audience that the impact of beauty products and services is in large part determined by the political and economic context of the goods themselves. Through the techniques of role reversals, character development and dramatic irony, Mena’s stories portray the U.S. beauty industry as a dynamic trade that exports new forms of whiteness across its southern border. Far from depicting Mexican women as passive consumers in the neocolonial marketplace, however, Mena shows how beauty products and services can be appropriated as limited yet potent acts of resistance. This article was published as Schuller, Kyla.
Critical role of COX-1 in prostacyclin production by human endothelial cells under modification of hydroperoxide tone
We aimed at evaluating the relative contribution of cyclooxygenase (COX) -1 and COX-2 to the synthesis of prostacyclin in endothelial cells under static conditions in the presence or absence of exogenous arachidonic acid and/or altered intracellular redox balance. Selective inhibitors of either COX-1 (SC560 and FR122047) or COX-2 (SC236) concentration dependently (1-300 nM) reduced basal and interleukin (IL) -1beta-induced prostacyclin production in human umbilical vein endothelial cells by 70% or more; compound selectivity was confirmed using a whole-blood assay (IC(50) COX-1/COX-2: 13 nM/930 nM for SC-560; 9 microM/457 nM for SC-236). The observed concomitant formation of isoprostane appeared to be associated with COX enzyme activity, while formation of COX-1/COX-2 heterodimers was detected by immunoprecipitation. In the presence of arachidonic acid and 12-hydroperoxy-eicosatetraenoic acid, either exogenous or provided by platelet activation, or after glutathione depletion, COX-1 inhibition but not COX-2 inhibition concentration dependently decreased prostacyclin production. Both isoforms appear to contribute to basal prostacyclin production by endothelial cells, with COX-2 providing the hydroperoxide tone required for COX-1 activity. Conversely, in the case of intracellular glutathione depletion or enhanced availability of arachidonic acid and hydroperoxides, selective COX-2 inhibition did not significantly affect the production of endothelial prostacyclin. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the effects of cyclooxygenase inhibitors on prostacyclin production

Rationale of the use of COX-2 inhibitors in ENT pathologies [Razionale d'uso dei cox-2 inibitori nelle affezioni ORL]
Upper airways inflammations (rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, polyposis, otitis, pharyngitis, etc) the pathologies most commonly encountered in the daily clinical practice and they represent, because of the high sanitary costs, an important social problem. The Literature suggests that almost all the symptoms, which characterize upper airways inflammations, are induced by the production of prostaglandins by cyclooxigenase (COX); it is obvious the need of a therapeutic action at this level. The non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) block the activity of both COX-1 and COX-2, whereas the selective inhibitors of COX-2 (the coxibs) act only on this isoform. Actually, the therapeutic effects of both NSAIDs and coxibs are due to their actions on COX-2, while the system toxicity of NSAIDs (gastrointestinal perforation or ulcer, reduction of glomerular filtration rate, prolongation of bleeding time) is ascribable to the inference of these drugs with the COX-1. In conclusion, a correct approach to ENT inflammations must implies the use of drugs efficacious against the typical symptoms of the inflammatory process (and specifically the symptom: pain), eventually joined with an appropriate antibiotic treatment; in this context, a selective inhibitor of COX-2 short course treatment offers the double advantage of managing the inflammation and avoiding damages to the gastric mucosa
Abstract : This biographical sketch attempts to quote some images of Otto Maria Carpeaux: various types of biographical constructions, carried out in different contexts by disparate authors under conditions just as distinct. It stems from a critical view of history, allowing for ?other images? fragmented and non-monumental ? to share the space. In dialogue with the montage principle, this sketch has two parts. The first, Possible Images, quotes the images produced during and after the life of the Austrian-Brazilian, who was born in Vienna in 1900, went to Brazil in exile in 1939 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1978. The second part, Possible Montages, presents two possibilities of a biographical exercise: through the allegorical reading of documentary O Velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), understood as an instrument of intervention in the Brazilian dictatorship context and as a biographical retelling of the author?s European experiences; and through my Scrapbook of Critical Images, a record of the encounters in Carpeaux through critical images produced from the caesura of the present
