Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Essas discussões estão apoiadas na semiótica pierciana e nos estudos de percepção visual (Gestalt).Abstract:This paper is intended to show that the object of investigation and the phenomena complexity in Geosciences require the use of visual language and cause its inevitable sharing with the oral language. In elementary teaching (ages 11-14), Geology is highlighted as a historical science, stressing its reasoning of starting from the effects in order to reach the phenomena causes, emphasizing logic and historical narrative, spatial reasoning and visual language. Students are encouraged to develop historical narrative, interlacing the verbal (narrative) and non-verbal (drawings) language. Two stories are presented, along with their corresponding drawings showing that the students have developed ‘visual thought’ determined by the necessity of structuring the organization and representation of visual concepts in drawings. In addition to this, the students have developed a narrative logic in which the parts have been adjusted according to notions of the final story. The theoretical framework for these ideas is Peirce´s semiotics and studies of visual perception (Gestalt).Key words: Science teaching. Geosciences teaching. Visual language. Visual perception.
This paper aims to foster the idea that Geology and Geosciences themes and field work are quite important for the cognitive development of secondary school pupils of the 5th to 8th grades (11 to 14 years of age) and have a role distinct from that of physics, chemistry and biology at this level. One of the distinctive features is the field work, having an interdisciplinary approach, is able to favor the building of a more integrated and broader view of the socio-environmental issues by showing: 1. the relation among environment, geology and society; 2. the relation between specific fields of knowledge; 3. the pedagogical integration and organization of the subject or course. In addition, I discuss the approach to socio-environmental themes in an interdisciplinary view, the training of reflective teachers and constructivism, which comprises the basic framework for independent, critical people with their own ethical and moral evaluation, capable of taking part in confronting the problems faced at present by humanity as a result of the state of globalization, technological domination and socio-environmental crisis. These assumptions, and the need to make them operational to ensure the training of teaching staff, lead us to the discussion on the concepts of nature and education, which involve: new attitudes and values with regard to the relationships between human-beings and Earth; Geology as a historical science, interpreting and encompassing nature; revitalizing field work; school as one of the social environments for the construction of knowledge; and the exercise of the interdisciplinary studies. These assumptions also lead us to the discussion on the teaching training role, teachers as critical professionals, in order to favor critical attitudes, independence, respect for diversity, the cooperative attitude and transformer action towards a fairer society more integrated with nature
Narratives and drawings (images) with geosciences themes in primary and secondary schools
This article discusses narratives and drawings with geosciences themes within teaching at the conclusion of two in-service teaching projects in the primary and secondary school. The spotlight is in the developing activities by teachers of Portuguese, Geography and Art. These teachers developed interesting connections between reading and observation by building narrative texts, narrative descriptions, visual and visual-verbal representations (drawings) of objects of geosciences events. The historical explanations in Geology/Geosciences open a range of learning and teaching practices, which have been hardly ever been used in primary and secondary school. These practices which compose geosciences school explanations deal with images, perception and synthesis in their relationships between objects and spaces. This reasoning has been built and defined connected to casual reason and historical narratives, it becomes a more generalized concept in the special and historical context. In this case, the processes of knowledge construction are continuous and discontinuous among contextualization, decontextualization, synthesis and analysis.O artigo discute narrativas e desenhos no ensino de temas geocientíficos nos resultados de dois projetos de formação continuada no Ensino Fundamental. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
