No full textSkripsi ini berjudul “That Clause Sebagai Noun Clause dalam Novel Eragon karya Christopher Paolini: Satu Kajian Sintaktis”. Sumber data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diambil dari satu buah novel yang berjudul Eragon karya Christopher Paolini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis fungsi dari penggunaan that clause, serta fungsi gramatikal dari konjungsi that pada that clause. Metode yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini adalah metode deskriptif analisis. Data yang telah dikumpulkan dianalisis berdasarkan teori noun clause dari Quirk (1985), dan Klammer (2000). Sedangkan teori mengenai fungsi gramatikal that dianalisis berdasarkan teori dari Leech (1989). Hasil dari skripsi ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) fungsi dari that clause diantaranya sebagai subjek, objek langsung, pelengkap subjek, pelengkap ajektif, dan sebagai apositif. (2) Fungsi gramatikal konjungsi „that‘ seluruhnya adalah sebagai penanda subordinatif yang mengawali that clause

The theoretical aim is the analysis of Anglo-American adventurous fantasy literature and its mythological background. Special attention is dedicated to the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien, whose lifework inspired Paolini. A single chapter describes life and work of Ch. Paolini. In the following chapters we can find the typology of the main characters, their function and characteristics, the role of the environment and the interpretation of the main motifs. AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE DIALOGUES IN THE NOVEL ENTITLED “ELDEST” BY CHRISTOPHER PAOLINI
Get PDFThis research paper is entitled “An Analysis of Figurative Dialogues in the Novel Entitled “Eldest” By Christopher Paolini”. In this paper, the writer attempts to answer the two research questions, they are : 1) What kinds of figurative language that are used in the dialogues of the novel entitled “Eldest” by Christopher Paolini?, and 2) What kinds of translation methods that are used in translating the figurative dialogues in the novel entitled “Eldest “?.
In conducting the research, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method to analyze all the selected samples in order to classify and explain them. In the novel, the writer found fourteen out of sixteen types of figurative language in 251 dialogues. Those fourteen types of figurative language found in the novel are: Idiom(106 items or 42.06%), Simile(33 items or 13.10%), Personification(26 items or 10.32%), Onomatopoeia(19 items or 7.54%), Synecdoche(16 items or 6.37%), Hyperbole(16 items or 6.37%), Imagery(7 items or 2.78%), Metaphor (6 items or 2.40%), Paradox(6 items or 2.40%), Irony(5 items or 2.00%), Metonymy(4 items or 1.64%), Alliteration (3 items or 1.20%), Symbol(1 item or 0.40%), and Assonance(3 items or 1.20%). In addition, the writer also analyzed the methods that were used by the translator in translating the figurative language. Those methods are: Communicative translation method (114 items or 46.53%), Literal(54 items or 22.04%), Free(41 items or 16.73%), Word-for-word (23 items or 9.40%), Idiomatic(10 items or 3.97%), Faithful(3 items or 1.22%), Semantic(0 item or 0%), and Adaptation(0 item or 0%).

No full textThe thesis deals with the interpretation of the popular fantasy tetralogy by contemporary American writer Christopher Paolini, The Legacy of the Dragon Riders (Inheritance Cycle), especially with the role of the supernatural and fantastic beings. The theoretical starting point will be an introduction to the different types of fantastic characters in English and American adventure fantasy literature for the young readers. One chapter will be devoted to the life and works of Ch. Paolini. The following chapters will focus on the typology of supernatural characters in The Legacy of the Dragon Riders (from dragons through elves to urgals and dwarves), their function, characteristics (typical traits) and the relationship to the hero, as well as on the role of the setting and an analysis of the main themes. The thesis will also include a reflection on Paolini's inspiration, especially with regard to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. In this respect, it will also attempt to briefly highlight the importance of fantastic ("ancient") language and its connection to the theme of power

No full textThe objective of this research is to find out how the unit shift occurs in the translation. The theory that used in this research is based on translation shift by J.C Catford. This research is conducted upon unit analysis, a novel by Christopher Paolini, Brisingr and its Indonesian Translation by Poppy D. Chusfany. The writer used the descriptive qualitative method to get the objective of the research, by reading and comparing both English as the source language and Indonesian as the target language, then marking and classifying where the unit shift occurs in translation and explain the occurrence of unit shift in the data analysis. The types of unit shifts found in the translation of Brisingr are shift from phrase into word, shift from morpheme into phrase, shift from word into phrase, and shift from morpheme into word. The heroism concept presented into several characters such asdragon rider. Hence, the object of this research presents the dragon rider character found in the novel Eragon by Christopher Paolini and His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik. Theoretical basis used to presenting concept heroism is the theory monomyth proposed by Campbell (1949). Then Heroism is linked to characterization by Kennedy and Gioia (2010) which presents the way of think and act. While theoretical basis used to analyze the problem solving is proposed by Marzano (1988). Lastly, theoretical basis to comparing the topics is proposed by Bassnett (1933). The research concentrates on comparison of the change of life experienced by dragon rider characters. The research also expands the relation of life changes to problem solving responses which is not only as a part of psychological fields but also included the change of life elements in it. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method in doing this research. The researcher found that both characters have the same pattern of life. A lot of aspects prove the change of life of hero is similar as it considered by heroism concept. The obstacles they have been through changes their life in the way of thinking, acting and problem solving ability. Then the different situation they have will raise them up to several levels of improvement, change their life differ physically and mentally
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
