To rediscover their public value universities can learn from the free culture movement

No full text
The culture of acceleration and quantification that arguably defines contemporary academic research is closely related to the information society in which we live and the technologies that support it. In this post Dafne Calvo, argues that the democratic decentralised principles of the free culture movement provide a blueprint for how academics and academic institutions might create an alternative to the accelerated academy

FINUDA and Hypernuclei Production at DAFNE

No full text
The DAFNE project at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) is an e+e- collider with electron and positron beams accelerated to 510 MeV by a Linac injector. DAFNE is designed to reach a top luminosity L 1033cm-2s-1, that is, to produce 4 × 103 F(1020)s-1. The hypernuclear research program at DAFNE relies on low-energy kaons, 16MeV, being produced by F-meson decays at rest: F K- K+ with a B.R.49%. In the initial stage, DAFNE will operate at a L 1032cm-2s-1, however the number of F produced, and the large geometrical acceptance of the FINUDA detector, 3sr, will allow a strong hypernuclear physics program to be pursued

Get PDF

Empirische Untersuchung in Grundschulen in Großpolen

DaFnE (German abbreviation: Deutsch als Fremdsprache nach Englisch – German after English) is an approach to teaching German as a third language to students who have already learned English. This methodology, which combines a first language (L1) with English as a second language (L2) and German as a third language (L3), is gaining popularity in Poland. This article contains both theoretical background and empirical research related to DaFnE. The first part introduces relevant definitions, aims of the DaFnE method and a short history of Tertiary Language Learning. The second part discusses teaching materials, which were created by the author of the article and used during empirical research in primary schools in the region of Greater Poland. Additionally, the paper includes results of surveys among the students and interviews among the German teachers

Private enterprise and digital participation: business model and the right to petition on Change.org

This research aims to approach the role of Change.org as an electronic petition platform in Spain, where there are no alternatives managed by public authorities. By a qualitative content analysis and a semi-structured interview, we research the business model of the page, in order to examine its data protection policy, its user verification system and, in a broader perspective, the legal framework in which it works. Results show the project is not related to Spanish law, it has a weak authentication system and its benefits are based on cost per acquisition

The (in)visible barriers to free software: Inequalities in online communities in Spain

Get PDF
Free culture communities support self-learning, peer production, and the distribution of knowledge generated without any restrictions. However, free culture communities are not isolated from the social inequalities of the outside world. Understanding (in)visibility as the (in)ability to address internal under-representation within these communities, this research aims to analyse their member profiles and their perception of this issue. To this end, an online questionnaire was administered to 290 communities and interviews were conducted with members of 37 of these previously surveyed communities. The respondents and interviewees acknowledged that technopolitics requires a broad knowledge of the technical implications of their values, which makes access to and participation in a community more difficult. They also criticised the gender bias of their communities and, last but not least, pointed to other inequalities relating to the sexual orientation, socioeconomic level, or ethnic origin of the members of their communities

Deep Anatomical Federated Network (Dafne): an open client/server framework for the continuous collaborative improvement of deep-learning-based medical image segmentation

Get PDF
Semantic segmentation is a crucial step to extract quantitative information from medical (and, specifically, radiological) images to aid the diagnostic process, clinical follow-up. and to generate biomarkers for clinical research. In recent years, machine learning algorithms have become the primary tool for this task. However, its real-world performance is heavily reliant on the comprehensiveness of training data. Dafne is the first decentralized, collaborative solution that implements continuously evolving deep learning models exploiting the collective knowledge of the users of the system. In the Dafne workflow, the result of each automated segmentation is refined by the user through an integrated interface, so that the new information is used to continuously expand the training pool via federated incremental learning. The models deployed through Dafne are able to improve their performance over time and to generalize to data types not seen in the training sets, thus becoming a viable and practical solution for real-life medical segmentation tasks.Comment: 10 pages (main body), 5 figures.

Get PDF
