    An Investigation of the Structure, Pinning and Magnetoresistance of Domain Walls in Ni81Fe19 Planar Nanowires

    The research and development of Ni81Fe19 thin films and planar nanowire structures has attracted considerable interest in recent years; in terms of improving the fundamental understanding of the basic physical processes and also for the development of potential applications. Example applications include sensors and the data storage devices. The optimisation of such devices requires detailed knowledge of the thickness dependence and microstructural influences on the magnetic and magnetoresistance properties, along with a thorough understanding of the effect of geometrical confinement on domain wall (DW) structure and pinning behaviour in nanowire structures. The out-of-plane structural properties of thermally evaporated Ni81Fe19 thin films on pre-oxidised silicon substrates have been investigated using x-ray scattering techniques and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These techniques have been used to provide information on the out-of-plane lattice parameter, the presence and degree of texture and also to quantify the width of the SiO2/Ni81Fe19 interface. Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry, differential phase contrast TEM imaging, micromagnetic simulations and anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements (AMR) have been used to make a detailed study of the thickness dependence of the magnetic behaviour of both thin films and nanowire structures. The resistivity of thin films produced in this study is found to exhibit a higher value and lower mean free path than has previously been reported in the literature, which is attributed to the presence of a microstructure characterised by a small crystallite grain structure. The AMR is strongly thickness dependent for t < 10 nm, and tends toward zero for t < 7 nm. It is suggested that this is due to strain at the SiO2/Ni81Fe19 interface, which changes the magnetostriction and is related to the AMR by spin-orbit effects. The structure and pinning behaviour of DWs has been systematically investigated as a function of nanowire width, thickness and notch geometry. Although the wall structure is sensitive to the nanowire cross-sectional area, the DW depinning behaviour is relatively insensitive to notch geometry and instead is highly sensitive to wall type and chirality. A detailed model has been developed to make predictions for the AMR of individual DWs in nanowires. The model incorporates experimentally derived thickness dependent resistivity parameters and detailed DW spin structures from micromagnetic simulations. The magnitude of DW resistance is sensitive to wire width and the AMR ratio, and is found to be extremely sensitive to the magnitude of the magnetoresistance

    MOT International London are delighted to present Reality Flickers, a new work by Katrina Palmer for her first solo exhibition with the gallery. Death, sex, loss and sculpture collide in Palmer’s new installation. The melodrama begins with an encounter between the protagonist, Reality Flickers, and the Heart Beast, otherwise known as ‘the dog’, ‘the fucker’, ‘the trickster’. All that remains is a retrieved oversized steel locker and the reverberant narrative in its walls. In Reality Flickers found and imagined objects provide the catalyst for obscure internal narratives and critical speculation. Combining writing, installed audio recording and live performance, Palmer’s practice relocates sculpture within shifting, capricious worlds and fictional spaces. Katrina Palmer (b.1967) lives and works in London. She was recently awarded the 2013 Artangel Open Commission, for a new project which will excavate an undisclosed place in England through writing and installation. She is also the author of The Dark Object, a series of connected stories about power relations in a fictional art school. Additional forthcoming projects include a new commission for the 2014 Whitstable Biennale and her next book, The Fabricator’s Tale, to be published by Book Works in 2014.     Truth and reconciliation at the grassroots : community truth processes in the Southern United States

    Includes bibliographical references (leaves 94-98).Truth commissions are implemented in order to "deal with the past" in the context of a transition in government from authoritarian to democratic rule. At the center of a truth commission is a truth process that attempts to establish the experience of gross human rights abuse at the hands of the state, and does so in a way which places the victims of such abuse at the center of the process, through valuing victim testimony as "truth." It is done with the assumption in mind, that in order for a society, or community, to have healthy relations in the future, violent past experiences must be faced and dealt with. Communities at a local level have imitated the structure, goals and procedures of truth commissions in projects that have been termed "Unofficial Truth Projects." This thesis compares three case studies of unofficial truth projects which have taken place in the Southern United States in the past few years: The Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Greensboro, North Carolina, which sought to establish a community reconciliation process 25 years after what has come to be known as the "Greensboro Massacre"; and two civil-society based truth processes, the Katrina National Justice Commission and the International Tribunal on Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which seek to establish truth and gain reparations for human rights abuses which have taken place in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The author considers various projects in a comparative manner, and through examining their histories, structures and ideological make-up, analyzes the processes in terms how these factors affect the ability for the project to: gain legitimacy as a truth process, generate resources and support, acknowledge victims' experiences, and engage the community in reconciliation efforts. The author also echoes the calls for a shift in paradigm in reconciliation and transitional justice literature, which would allow for a space to exist for truth processes that may be unofficial and fall outside a context of a formal transition. Such processes could still greatly benefit communities living in post-conflict contexts and with histories of racial and political violence, such as many communities in the Southern United States

    In 2006, typhoon Xangsane disrupted a multiagency health needs study of 4,982 individuals in Vietnam. Following this disaster, 798 of the original participants were reinterviewed to determine prevalence and risk factors associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Posttyphoon prevalences were PTSD 2.6%, MDD 5.9%, PD 9.3%, and GAD 2.2%. Of those meeting criteria for a disorder, 70% reported only one disorder, 15% had two, 14% had three, and 1% met criteria for all four disorders. Risk factors for posttyphoon psychopathology differed among disorders, but generally were related to high typhoon exposure, prior trauma exposure, and in contrast to Western populations, higher age, but not gender

    ChatGPT-based Learning And Reading Assistant (C-LARA – pronounced “Clara”) is an AIbasedplatform which allows users to create multimodal texts designed to improve reading skillsin second languages. GPT-4/ChatGPT-4 is central to the project: as well as being the corelanguage processing component, it has in collaboration with a human partner developed thegreater part of the codebase.Following on from the initial progress report, released in July 2023, we focus on new workcarried out during the period August 2023 – March 2024. The platform is far more usable. CLARAis now packaged with a wizard-style interface (“Simple C-LARA”) that allows the nonexpertuser to create a complete illustrated multimodal text by entering a prompt and approvingdefault choices a few times, and the software is deployed on a fast dedicated server maintained bythe University of South Australia. Other substantial new pieces of functionality are support for“phonetic texts”, where words are automatically divided up into units associated with phoneticvalues; “reading histories”, which support the combination of several texts into a single virtualdocument; and the social network, rudimentary in the first version, which now includes supportfor friending, an update feed, and email alerts.To investigate the AI’s abilities as a language processor, we present an experiment where wecreated six texts for each of five languages, using the same prompts for each language, andevaluated the accuracy of the language processing. We also give the results when some of theexperiments were repeated five months later with a newer version of GPT-4, in the case ofEnglish revealing a dramatic reduction in error rates. A small questionnaire-based study probesusers’ subjective views of C-LARA projects they have created: in general, people are pleasedwith the results, to the extent that they are often sharing them.With regard to GPT-4/ChatGPT-4’s software engineer role, we present a breakdown of thevarious modules and functionalities, indicating the AI’s contribution. It is capable of writing thesimpler modules on its own or with minimal human assistance, and only had serious problemswith a small number of top-level functionalities, in particular “Simple C-LARA”, which directlyor indirectly involved most of the codebase.We describe initial use cases, including trialling of C-LARA in a school classroom, integratingit into the experimental CALL platform Basm, and creating multimodal texts in the Oceaniclanguages Drehu and Iaai. A short section summarises our policy on ethical issues concerningthe crediting of the AI as an author. The appendices present examples illustrating use of theSimple C-LARA and Advanced C-LARA versions of the platform, list functionalities and codefiles, and reproduce conversations with the AI about various aspects of the project
