Private Museums and Their Legacies: The Case of Ronald S. Lauder and Adele Bloch-Bauer's Neue Galerie
abstract: The Neue Galerie in New York City includes some of the most impressive and culturally-specific artwork from Ronald S. Lauder's private art collection. The Neue's permanent exhibitions showcase pieces from the Wiener Sezession (Vienna Secession) and Wiener Werkstätte (Applied Arts of Vienna) in an environment that also employs replicas and period specific motifs to evoke the interiors of the private homes in which affluent fin-de-siècle Viennese art patrons lived, displayed influential modernist work, and held culturally important salons. Gustav Klimt's celebrated Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) is arguably the museum's most prized artwork. It serves as an icon that immortalizes Ronald Lauder as private collector. The figure of Adele Bloch-Bauer has also become an important emblem, whose story epitomizes the complexities of Jewish identity and its influence upon Viennese modern art. This thesis explores how the Neue Galerie's physical layout represents a specific model of modernism. By focusing on the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, I urge a rethinking of the museum's relationship to modern art as an interpretation of the past. The themes that surround Adele Bloch-Bauer I have shaped Lauder's agenda as the leading private collector of the art of fin-de-siècle Vienna.Dissertation/ThesisM.A. Art History 201
The Enlightenment pedagogy aimed to discuss the means of educating the human being both for good and intellectual independence, based on the principles of moral laws and of the supreme good. Thus, philosophy at that time has set the total responsibility of man for his acts as a parameter of its pedagogy, which entailed the indispensability of an education that has undergone a positive transformation in human nature, based on the maxim of moral judgement. Initially adept at such proposal, Heinrich von Kleist, right after his famous "Kantian crisis", began to contest the Enlightenment education model from a skeptical bias, since, for the author, the Kantian criticism showed the failures of this pedagogy according to a new view of reality. From this new perspective, the notions of freedom and morality assumed a new characterization, since it became impossible for Kleist to determine the results of these educational projects on human conduct. In face of this scenario, we will analyze in this paper two exemplary texts of how the author transposes such discussion into literature: in "Allerneuster Erziehungsplan", Kleist inverts the logic of this education by proposing a "school of vice", whereas in "Der Findling", the author contests the bourgeois moral values of family and supreme good, leading to a text full of violence and evil

Percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale in migraine with aura, a randomized controlled trial.
AIMS
Migraine with aura and patent foramen ovale (PFO) are associated. The Percutaneous Closure of PFO in Migraine with Aura (PRIMA) trial is a multicentre, randomized trial to investigate the effect of percutaneous PFO closure in patients refractory to medical treatment.
METHODS
Migraine with aura patients and PFO who were unresponsive to preventive medications were randomized to PFO closure or medical treatment. Both groups were given acetylsalicylic acid 75-100 mg/day for 6 months and clopidogrel 75 mg/day for 3 months. The primary endpoint was reduction in monthly migraine days during months 9-12 after randomization compared with a 3-month baseline phase before randomization. The committee reviewing the headache diaries were blinded to treatment assignment.
RESULTS
One hundred and seven patients were randomly allocated to treatment with an Amplatzer PFO Occluder (N = 53) or control with medical management (N = 54). The trial was terminated prematurely because of slow enrolment. Eighty-three patients (40 occluder, 43 control) completed 12-month follow-up. Mean migraine days at baseline were 8 (±4.7 SD) in the closure group and 8.3 (±2.4) in controls. The primary endpoint was negative with -2.9 days after PFO closure vs. -1.7 days in control group (P = 0.17). Patent foramen ovale closure caused five adverse events without permanent sequelae.
CONCLUSION
In patients with refractory migraine with aura and PFO, PFO closure did not reduce overall monthly migraine days
Lithium for the Maintenance Treatment of Bipolar I Disorder: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Discontinuation Study
Full author list omitted for brevity. For the full list of authors, see article.OBJECTIVE: This study examined the role of lithium in the maintenance treatment of pediatric patients with bipolar I disorder (BP-I). METHOD: Participants aged 7 to 17 years who presented with a manic or mixed episode received 24 weeks of lithium treatment in one of two multiphase studies, the Collaborative Lithium Trials (CoLT 1 and CoLT 2). Responders were randomized to continue lithium or to be cross-titrated to placebo for up to 28 weeks. The primary outcome measure was relative risk of study discontinuation for any reason. RESULTS: A Cox regression analysis found that those who continued treatment with lithium (n = 17) had a lower hazard ratio compared to those who received placebo (n = 14) (p = .015)]. The vast majority of discontinuations were due to mood symptom exacerbations, with most of these occurring in the placebo-treated group. Discontinuation for other reasons occurred at similarly low rates across both group. Most adverse events were mild to moderate in severity, and only one study participant was discontinued from the trial owing to a serious adverse event (aggression). There was no statistically significant difference with respect to weight gain in participants receiving lithium compared to those receiving placebo. CONCLUSION: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Discontinuation Trial builds support for the role of lithium as a maintenance treatment in pediatric patients with bipolar disorder and for the safety and tolerability of 28 weeks of maintenance lithium treatment. Collaborative Work with Medical Images Proceedings JENC7 A. Horsch 222-1
Medical care and research are highly specialised and distributed. Computer supported collaboration using local and wide area networks can essentially help to bridge the communication gaps between the various actors in health care and medical research. Hereby the full integration of medical image data plays a key role due to the fact that most decisions are made looking at images, e. g. an X-ray, an MRI, a photographic picture, an ECG curve and so on. In this paper three running pilot projects are presented which implement and evaluate different kinds of computer supported collaboration at a university hospital with emphasis on medical images: (1) A medical informatics research and development collaboration in endoscopy between image analysis experts and clinicians at different institutions. (2) A patient treatment collaboration between the physician at the nuclear reactor performing the radiation and the radiation planning experts at the Clinic of Radiation Therapy. (3) A medical resea..
Self-referential memory in autism spectrum disorder and typical development: Exploring the ownership effect
Owned objects occupy a privileged cognitive processing status and are viewed almost as extensions of the self. It has been demonstrated that items over which a sense of ownership is felt will be better recalled than other items. As autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterised by an impaired self-concept, people with ASD may not demonstrate this ownership effect. Two experiments were conducted which replicate Cunningham, Turk, Macdonald, & Macrae (2008). In Experiment 1, neurotypical adults completed a card sorting task and cards belonging to the ‘self’ were better remembered than cards belonging to the ‘other’. In the second experiment, adults with ASD recalled self- and other-referent items equally well. These results shed light both on the nature of the self-concept in ASD and the relationship between sense of self and the ownership effect
Treatment response and remission in a double-blind, randomized, head-to-head study of lisdexamfetamine dimesylate and atomoxetine in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
A secondary objective of this head-to-head study of lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (LDX) and atomoxetine (ATX) was to assess treatment response rates in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and an inadequate response to methylphenidate (MPH). The primary efficacy and safety outcomes of the study, SPD489-317 (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01106430), have been published previously
Experimental alteration of allanite at 200°C: the role of pH and aqueous ligands
International audienceAbstract Allanite is a major host of rare earth elements (REEs) in the continental crust. In this study, reaction mechanisms behind allanite alteration are investigated through batch experiment runs on natural allanite grains in carbonate-bearing hydrothermal fluids at 200°C, with initial acidic (pH = 4) or alkaline (pH = 8) conditions and with different aqueous ligands (120 mmol kg −1 of F, Cl, P or S). Time-series experiment runs in F-doped systems at different durations between 15 and 180 days reached a steady state at 120 days. The pH efficiently controls the allanite alteration process, with initial high pH, alkaline conditions being more reactive (75% alteration compared with 25% under acidic conditions). The ligand also significantly influences the alteration process under initial acidic conditions with the P-doped system (70%) almost non-reactive for the Cl- and S-doped systems (<5%). In the alteration rim, REEs are mainly redistributed in REE-bearing phases either as carbonates (F-doped) or phosphates (P-doped). The relatively flat REE-normalized patterns of the recovered experimental fluids suggest a fractionation of light rare earth elements (LREEs) over heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) during the course of the alteration reactions. It is proposed that secondary REE mineral precipitation at the reaction front creates a local disequilibrium in the solution and a steep chemical gradient promoting allanite dissolution and thus its alterability
