The Mists of Ramanna : The Legend That Was Lower Burma

Open access. Free Download of book via OAPEN Library.Scholars have long accepted the belief that a Theravada Buddhist Mon kingdom, Ramannadesa, flourished in coastal Lower Burma until it was conquered in 1057 by King Aniruddha of Pagan—which then became, in essence, the new custodian and repository of Mon culture in the Upper Burmese interior. This scenario, which Aung-Thwin calls the ""Mon Paradigm,"" has circumscribed much of the scholarship on early Burma and significantly shaped the history of Southeast Asia for more than a century. Now, in a masterful reassessment of Burmese history, Michael Aung-Thwin reexamines the original contemporary accounts and sources without finding any evidence of an early Theravada Mon polity or a conquest by Aniruddha. The paradigm, he finds, cannot be sustained. Aung-Thwin meticulously traces the paradigm's creation to the merging of two temporally, causally, and contextually unrelated Mon and Burmese narratives.Knowledge Unlatched - KU Select 2016 Backlist Collection - 10042

Politics as a Vocation: Aung San Suu Kyi, Politician or Activist?

    No full text
Myanmar’s opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi was seen by the world as a heroic activist and a Nobel Peace Laureate for nonviolent struggle. Since she became a stateswoman, the world’s opinion seemingly changed. In the context of the 2017 Rohingya crisis, she was even labeled an “ignoble laureate” by the New Yorker due to what the West perceived as her silence on the flight of more than 700,000 refugees from Western Myanmar to Bangladesh. This led Western opinion leaders to question her moral conviction and her iconic status as a human rights activist. Through Max Weber’s definion of a politican in his “Politics as a Vocation,” this paper examines whether Aung San Suu Kyi is a politician or an activist

The Mists of Rāmañña: The Legend That Was Lower Burma

Scholars have long accepted the belief that a Theravada Buddhist Mon kingdom, Rāmaññadesa, flourished in coastal Lower Burma until it was conquered in 1057 by King Aniruddha of Pagan—which then became, in essence, the new custodian and repository of Mon culture in the Upper Burmese interior. This scenario, which Aung-Thwin calls the "Mon Paradigm," has circumscribed much of the scholarship on early Burma and significantly shaped the history of Southeast Asia for more than a century. Now, in a masterful reassessment of Burmese history, Michael Aung-Thwin reexamines the original contemporary accounts and sources without finding any evidence of an early Theravada Mon polity or a conquest by Aniruddha. The paradigm, he finds, cannot be sustained. How, when, and why did the Mon Paradigm emerge? Aung-Thwin meticulously traces the paradigm's creation to the merging of two temporally, causally, and contextually unrelated Mon and Burmese narratives, which were later synthesized in English by colonial officials and scholars. Thus there was no single originating source, only a late and mistaken conflation of sources. The conceptual, methodological, and empirical ramifications of these findings are significant. The prevalent view that state-formation began in the maritime regions of Southeast Asia with trade and commerce rather than in the interior with agriculture must now be reassessed. In addition, a more rigorous look at the actual scope and impact of a romanticized Mon culture in the region is required. Other issues important to the field of early Burma and Southeast Asian studies, including the process of "Indianization," the characterization of "classical" states, and the advent and spread of Theravada Buddhism, are also directly affected by Aung-Thwin’s work. Finally, it provides a geo-political, cultural, and economic alternative to what has become an ethnic interpretation of Burma’s history.Knowledge Unlatche

Effect of Post Harvest Handling Practices of Inland Fisheries (Case Study: Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyarwady Region) (Hsu Mon Aung, 2025)

    No full text
Effective post-harvest handling plays a crucial role in small-scale fisheries by preserving the freshness of fish, enhancing food safety, and reducing post-harvest spoilage. These practices directly affect the economic stability of fishing households by minimizing losses and sustaining income. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the impact on current post-harvest handling practices on fish loss and the income of fishers. A mixed-method approach was adopted, by using structured and semi- structured questionnaires developed in line with the FAO’s Post-Harvest Fish Loss Assessment framework (QLAM). The results show that frequent losses are caused by not having enough cold storage, not getting enough ice, not handling things in a clean way, and not having insulated transport. More than half of the respondents who answered that they lost 10–30% of their catch because of physical damage and spoilage. These influences selling prices and household profits go down. The study finding suggests raising fishers’ awareness of proper handling, investing in better storage, and ensuring affordable ice access which maintain fish quality, enhancement market value, and secure livelihoods

    No full text
This study analyzes the current working conditions and perceptions on work and life balance (WLB) among female employees in three specific Cantonment Area Development Committees: Yangon, Mingalardon, and Hmawbi. This research employs descriptive methods, utilizing primary as well as secondary data. The primary data are collected from 146 women employees, including both permanent and daily wage workers within the three CADCs with a structured questionnaire. The secondary data are gathered from relevant literature, textbooks, previous research papers, documents, and websites. The findings reveal that the factors such as workload, social support, and organizational policies significantly influence on WLB of these women. Suggestions include career development support, childcare and working women facilities, review leave policies, promote work-life balance (WLB) initiatives, address work interference and support personal responsibilities to worklife balance (WLB) policies. Addressing these challenges is crucial for successful working conditions for women in the CADCs, supporting their contributions to public administration, and promoting overall gender equality in the workforce
