Neandertalczyk „Lewantyński” z Wadi Amud
In this paper the author presents an attempt to classify the fossil skull from Wadi Amud using the features collected in Table 2. A new comparative method is applied for the analysis. The index of similarities consists in denoting the similarities of particular figures using a three grade scale A, B, C. The index of similarities is a fraction. The numerator represents the number of identic categories (A, B. C) of two objects, the donominator represents the sum total of identic categories plus the number of discordances multiplied by two. The index of similarities ranges from 100 (total uniformity) to zero (total diversity). As a result of the application of this method the author obtained a dendritic arrangement (fig. 2). The starting point for this arrangement is J. Czekanowski\u27s table of distances (1909). Based on this table we arrange the individuals in this way that we join each individual with the nearest one (Taksonomia wrocławska, 1951). It may be generally stated that Amud Man shows an equal similarity with Neandertalians and with Homo sapiens fossilis.Dans cette étude l\u27auteur présente une épreuve de classifier le crâne fossile du gisement Wadi Amud en usant les mesurages demontres dans table 2. Une nouvelle méthode comparative a été appliquée pour cette analyse. L\u27indice de similarité caractérise les similitudes des objets particuliers à l’aide d’une graduation en triple échelle A, B, C. L\u27indice de similarité est une fraction. Le numérateur représente la somme des catégories identiques (A, B, C) de deux objets, le dénominateur représente la somme des catégories identiques + le nombre des catégories discordantes multiplié par 2. L\u27indice de similarité range entre 100 (uniformité absolue) et zéro (diversité totale). Les similitudes des individus caractérisés à l\u27aide de cette méthode sont démontrées par un arrangement dendritique (fig. 2). Cet arrangement s\u27appuie sur la table des distances d\u27après la méthode des différences de J. Czekanowski (1909). Pour construire un dendrite on joint chaque individu avec l\u27individu prochain dans le groupe examiné, (Taksonomia wrocławska, 1951). Konseptualisasi dan implementasi ‘Amud pada penafsiran Hamid Al Din Al Farahi
Salah satu cabang Ulum Alquran adalah munasabah. Keberadaan munasabah ini memang punya latar belakang pro dan kontra. Tapi di samping itu semua, pasti ada sisi positif yang justru banyak di dapat. Salah satu mufassir kontemporer yang kembali menghadirkan cara berpikir dengan dasar munasabah adalah Hamiduddin al-Farahi. Ia mengembangkan teori munasabah menjadi sebuah metodologi yang berhasil menarik perhatian kalangan pengkaji Alquran. Nizam adalah metodologi yang ia gagas dan langsung diterapkan pada penafsirannya, sekalipun tidak semua surat dalam Alquran. Selain itu, juga ada konsep ‘amud, yakni tema sentral yang ada pada surat. Keberadaan ‘amud menjadi latar belakang penulisan dalam penelitian ini. Orientasi permasalahannya terletak pada pernyataan al-Farahi bahwa setiap surat pasti mempunyai ‘amud. Namun pada penafsirannya, ada empat surat yang tidak disebutkan ‘amud nya oleh al-Farahi. Apakah al-Farahi tidak konsisten dalam menerapkan konsep yang sudah ia tetapkan, ini menjadi hipotesis awal dalam penelitian ini. Pengkajian ini berlanjut pada karya-karya al-Farahi yang lain. Pada salah satu karyanya, yaitu Dala’il al-Nizam al-Farahi mencantumkan penjelasan ‘amud secara global pada surat. Setidaknya dari pengamatan pada Dala’il al-Nizam ini mematahkan hipotesis awal. Pembahasan tersebut, kemudian memunculkan asumsi baru. Bagaimana cara menemukan ‘amud pada satiap surat. Mengingat bahwa al-Farahi ini tidak mengkonsepkannya secara gamblang. Maka dilakukanlah analisis pada dua kitab tafsir yang tetap merujuk pada metodologi ‘amud al-Farahi, yakni Amin Ahsan al-Islahi dan M. Khaleel-ur Rahman Chishti. Dari keterangan yang didapat, maka dirumuskanlah langkah-langkah dalam menemukan dan merumuskan ‘amud. Yakni, dengan tetap mengkaji munasabah per ayat dalam setiap surat. Kemudian, mengelompokkannya menjadi beberapa sub-tema, ini yang disebut dengan nizam atau macro structure dari surat. Dan, langkah terakhir adalah menganalisis lebih dalam lagi pembahasan apa yang tetap ada atau yang lebih dominan dari setiap sub-tema pengelompokan ayat tersebut. Pembahasan yang sering muncul itulah yang akan merumuskan ‘amud pada setiap surat. Kerangka berpikir yang digagas oleh al-Farahi memang masih memiliki sisi kekurangan. Namun, peletakan dasar atas konsep tersebut merupakan suatu keberanian. Karena metodologinya itulah, kajian terhadap struktur dan tema sentral dalam Alquran masih diminati oleh para pengkaji Alquran dan akan terus mengalami perkembangan dan penyempurnaan
Virtual reconstruction of the Neanderthal Amud 1 cranium

Objectives We describe a new computer reconstruction to obtain complete anatomical information of the ecto- and endocranium from the imperfectly preserved skull of the Neanderthal Amud 1. Materials and Methods Data were obtained from computed tomography scans of the fossil cranium. Adhesive and plaster were then virtually removed from the original specimen, and the fragments comprising the fossil cranium were separated. These fragments were then mathematically reassembled based on the smoothness of the joints. Both sides of the cranium were reassembled separately, and then aligned based on bilateral symmetry and the distance between the mandibular fossae obtained from the associated mandible. The position of the isolated maxilla was determined based on the position of the mandible that was anatomically articulated to the mandibular fossae. To restore missing basicranial and damaged endocranial regions, the cranium of Forbes' Quarry 1 was warped onto that of La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1, and the resulting composite Neanderthal cranium was then warped onto the reconstructed Amud 1 by an iterative thin-plate spline deformation. Results Comparison of the computer reconstruction with the original indicated that the newly reconstructed Amud 1 cranium was slightly shorter and wider in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions, respectively, suggesting that it was relatively more brachycephalic. The endocranial volume was estimated to be 1,736 cm3, which was quite similar to the original estimated value of 1,740 cm3. Discussion This new computer reconstruction enables not only measurement of new cranial metrics, but also inclusion of the Amud 1 specimen in three-dimensional geometric morphometric analyses that were previously difficult due to its incompleteness.Peer Reviewe

New Data from Shovakh Cave and Its Implications for Reconstructing Middle Paleolithic Settlement Patterns in the Amud Drainage, Israel
This study presents the geoarchaeological and geochronological aspects of Shovakh Cave and the first comparative context to the nearby Amud Cave (~ 500 m downstream), providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the range of human behaviours within a small geographic area. Sediment samples from two newly excavated areas at the rear and entrance of the cave were analysed using infrared spectroscopy, micromorphology and phytolith analysis and dated through uranium-thorium and luminescence techniques. The rear of the cave shows carnivore activity and low artefact concentrations. It also exhibits a shift in sedimentation from wind-blown deposits to colluviation of terra rossa. Direct dating of the deposits associated with the Middle Palaeolithic (MP) occupation at this area could not be obtained due to the breccia forming at the lower part of the excavation area. However, the later phases of the Middle Palaeolithic occupation at this area gave an age estimate of 45.5 ± 3.7 ka. At the entrance of the cave, there are relatively more residues associated with human use of fire. Post-depositional processes in this area include decalcification of the upper layer, cementation of the lower layer and phosphatisation due to guano decomposition, which indicates that this area was probably roofed. The ages obtained in this area range between 67.5 ± 5.5 to 56.2 ± 5.9 ka, overlapping with the occupation time of Amud cave. The evidence from Shovakh Cave presents lower intensity of occupation compared to Amud, indicating variable modes of site use by humans in the Amud drainage during the Late Middle Palaeolithic
Hominid Remains from Amud Cave in the Context of the Levantine Middle Paleolithic
The evolutionary and behavioral implications of the hominid remains from the old and new. Amud Cave excavations are discussed in this paper and viewed against the archaeological record of the Levantine Middle Paleolithic. On the biological level, the finds from Amud support the view that Neanderthals were a different species from Homo sapiens. While it is fully acknowledged that behavioral differences can not support or refute the claims for taxonomie differentiation, the analysis of mortuary practices indicates that both strong similarity and subtle differences between Neanderthals and АМН occur in this realm of symbolic behavior.Dans cet article sont analysées, d'un point de vue phylogénétique et comportemental, les découvertes anciennes et récentes d'Amud, dans le contexte du Paléolithique moyen du Levant. Du point de vue biologique, les Hominidés d'Amud s 'accordent avec l'interprétation qui fait des Néandertaliens une espèce différente des Homo sapiens. Il est bien connu que les différences comportementales ne peuvent être utilisées en taxonomie, mais les pratiques funéraires montrent à la fois d'étroites similarités et de subtiles différences entre les Néandertaliens et les hommes anatomiquement modernes pour ce domaine du comportement symbolique.Hovers Erella, Rak Yoel, Lavi Ron, Kimbel William H. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
