Cultural Mediation for Museums. Driving Audience Engagement

    No full text
The most relevant resource for museums is their audience. The new definition of museums released in August 2022 by ICOM, the International Council of Museums, puts at the core their activities “in the service of society” through the offering of “varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing”. The audience actively contributes to creating experiences, but their engagement remains a difficult challenge for museums. Especially the recent pandemic has shown that museums face multiple difficulties in reaching and engaging their visitors, making their engagement a top priority. To that end, cultural mediation is a key driver to make arts accessible even to the most distant visitors. Thus, cultural mediation has raised the interest of many museums. Traditionally cultural organizations design mediation in accord with “the one-best solution” principle, providing one single concept of cultural mediation to the entire audience. However, this model does not work out, and better cultural mediation services can be designed to increase audience engagement. But how? To solve this issue, as marketing management teaches, museums should segment their visitors’ market, and design accordingly cultural mediation. This book explains how to adopt this customizing strategy. Based on a multi-method research project run in 2021 by the University of Roma Tre for (and in collaboration with) the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Arts in Rome, this book presents a marketing management model to tailor cultural mediation according to visitors’ profiles for the benefits of museums’ educational services offices. Chapter 1 focuses on the processes of cultural mediation adopted at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome. Isabella de Stefano, Head of Communication and Education at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, presents the challenges that the Gallery has to deal with and how cultural mediation helps the museum in engaging visitors. Chapter 2 presents the state of the art of studies related to audience engagement in the arts. After providing the definition, Michela Addis identifies the drivers of audience engagement. Among them, the visitor's ability to fully immerse in the experience is a key driver that cultural organizations must leverage. By providing visitors with useful, enriched, and customized information, museums design labels, apps, and cultural mediation to engage them. Thus, audience engagement emerges as the ultimate goal of museum cultural mediation. After the setting of the goal of museum cultural mediation, Chapter 3 presents the state of the art of this service for the benefit of visitors. Starting with the results of a multidisciplinary literature review about museum cultural mediation, Zoe Giannotti focuses on managerial practices. By discussing the findings of two benchmarking analyses run on 33 educational programmes worldwide and 68 worldwide examples of museum cultural mediation, a list of the competencies and skills needed for cultural mediation emerges. Although knowing the state of the art about museum cultural mediation is important, certainly it is not enough to design more engaging experiences. Towards that goal, a comprehensive understanding of the visitors’ point of view is needed. Chapter 4 addresses this topic. By leveraging in-depth interviews with visitors who experience museum cultural mediation for the first time, Rosina Baldo and Anna Minici identify the visitors’ value chains regarding the museum cultural mediation, depicting four different visitor profiles. The following Chapter 5 builds on the full set of findings presented and proposes an innovative model. Different cultural mediators target different visitors’ profiles. Walter Altamirano Aguilar and Valeria Bellusci suggest a customized model of museum cultural mediation able to satisfy both the needs of the museum and visitors and achieve audience engagement. Four kinds of the cultural mediator – namely, the Guide, the Educator, the Designer, and the Manager Mediators – differ regarding their education, key skills, communication abilities, and target audience; each of them satisfies the need of a specific target profile. Finally, Chapter 6 focuses on the organizational structures that sustain cultural mediation. As Valeria Guerrisi explains, this educational service can be fully explored only if the museums (1) set up a clear audience development strategy; (2) design a proper organizational structure; (3) know their visitors; and (4) customize their cultural mediation offerings. Together, the six chapters contribute to better designing museum cultural mediation. However, each of them is self-standing, addressing a specific step of this strategy making cultural mediation easier and more effective from the managerial, organizational, and operational points of view

Eur J Neurol. 2010 Dec;17(12):1482-5. Effect of prothrombin 19911 A>G polymorphism on the risk of cerebral sinus-venous thrombosis. Martinelli I, Bucciarelli P, De Stefano V, Passamonti SM, Menegatti M, Tormene D, Tosetto A, Mannucci PM. A. Bianchi Bonomi Haemophilia and Thrombosis Center, Department of Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda - Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, University of Milan, Milan, Italy. [email protected] BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The A>G polymorphism at position 19911 of the prothrombin gene is associated with a mildly increased risk of venous thromboembolism, alone or in association with such common thrombophilia mutations as factor V Leiden and prothrombin 20210 GA. Its role in cerebral sinus-venous thrombosis (CSVT) is not known. METHODS: The presence of prothrombin 19911 A>G was investigated in a case–control study of 107 patients with cerebral thrombosis and factor V Leiden (n = 25), prothrombin 20210 GA (n = 47), without known thrombophilia (n = 35) and 842 healthy individuals with the corresponding coagulation profile. RESULTS: Prothrombin 19911 A>G did not increase the risk of CSVT in carriers of factor V Leiden (adjusted odds ratio 1.6, 95%CI 0.6–4.7), prothrombin 20210 GA (odds ratio 1.1, 95%CI 0.6–2.2), nor in patients without known thrombophilia (odds ratio 1.3, 95%CI 0.5–3.1). CONCLUSIONS: Prothrombin 19911 A>G polymorphism does not appear to be a risk factor for CSVT, alone or in association with factor V Leiden or prothrombin 20210GA. © 2010 The Author(s). A revision of the monoraphid pennate diatom genus Campyloneis Grunow was carried out based on LM and EM observations. The material examined originated from various herbarium collections and from extant epiphytic diatom communities on leaves of Posidonia spp. We also examined the generitype C. grevillei (Smith) Grunow and the fossil material of C. gheyselinchi Reinhold from which the author extracted the type. Our results clarified the fine structure of C. grevillei and C. gheyselinchi. Of the various varieties of C. grevillei, only the variety argus (Grunow) Cleve was retained. This differs from the nominate variety in the arrangement and shape of the areolae adjacent to the sternum of the araphid valve. The newly described taxon Campyloneis juliae De Stefano differs from all Campyloneis species in areolae ultrastructure and morphology of the valvocopulae. As for the fossil species C. gheyselinchi, the sternum valve areolae are similar to those of C. grevillei, but scarcity of frustules in the type material prohibited evaluation of its variability. For this reason we provisionally maintained its rank of species. The elaborate linking systems among the valvocopulae and valves in Campyloneis species appear to provide structural reinforcement against pressure from neighboring epiphytic diatoms and scouring of seagrass leaves.A revision of the monoraphid pennate diatom genus Campyloneis Grunow was carried out based on LM and EM observations. Una marcha a pie y sus historias: la novela de Victoria de Stefano

    No full text
El presente trabajo se acerca a la obra a partir del análisis temático y de los elementos discursivos empleados por la autora así como del diálogo con la tradición en la que se inserta la novela.ABSTRACTA hike and its stories: The novel by Victoria de StefanoIn the novel Historias de la marcha a pie, the Venezuelan author Victoria de Stefano looks upon the theme of life and death, two of the greatest universal topics that constitute the center of human condition as well as the artistic task throughout the history of culture. The treatment of these topics acquires such particular resonance in the novel that it incorporates the work to the perennial flow of the production of culture and, in a noticeable way, to the modernity of the second half of the 20th century. It could be said that the author, through fiction, has put her novel to converse with Sartrean existentialism. Throughout the story, the main character builds a vision of herself, the other and the world, as an option and a vital commitment capable to counteract the erasure of death. This work approaches the novel from the thematic analysis perspective and discursive elements used by the author, as well as of the dialogue in the tradition in which the novel is inserted.RésuméUne marche a pied et ses histories: le roman de Victoria de StefanoDans le roman Historias de la marcha a pie, l’auteur vénézuélienne Victoria de Stefano aborde le thème de la vie et de la mort, deux des plus grands sujets universels qui constituent le centre de la condition humaine ainsi que la tâche artistique à travers l’histoire de la culture. Pareto's Chronicles: Liberty and the Left

    Get PDF
The ‘second series’ of the Giornale degli Economisti commenced in 1890. It revealed a notable change in editorial direction from the earlier series, which was a direct result of Alberto Zorli being joined by leading liberal intellectuals, Ugo Mazzola, Antonio de Viti de Marco and Maffeo Pantaleoni, as the Journal’s proprietary directors. In regard to economic science, the second series saw the Journal establish itself as the leading Italian distributor of the new marginalism. In regard to politics, it became a leading advocate for liberal policy. To that end, the Journal published a special feature from 1891 entitled ‘cronaca’, which critically chronicled practical developments in Italian public policy, public finances and the state of the economy. In 1893 Pareto took over from Ugo Mazzola as author of the chronicles, a role he continued to perform until 1897. His contributions were, overwhelmingly, critical of interventionist and militaristic actions of the Italian Government. The purpose of this paper is to place Pareto’s chronicles in their historical context and search for comments that hint at the subsequent development of sociological theory. This will be achieved by: interpreting Pareto’s ‘cronaca’ with reference to political developments in Italy from the 1880s to 1897; identifying practical illustrations in the ‘cronaca’ concerning liberty and the extreme left in Italian society; and identifying three broad consistencies between Pareto’s ‘non-scientific’ ‘Cronaca’ and his scientific ‘General Sociology’.Cronaca, Chronicle, Vilfredo Pareto, General Sociology
