Phenomenology in the works of Robbe-Grillet
This thesis contends that a return to a phenomenological
analysis of Alain Robbe-Grillet's film and fiction is a relevant and useful undertaking at the start of the twenty
first century, providing the opportunity to reassess Robbe-Grillet's entire oeuvre, both films and novels. It addresses the limitations of earlier phenomenological studies, analysing works not yet subjected to phenomenological analysis, and exploring important
themes into which phenomenology can provide original insights, especially since the development of new phenomenological critical theories.
The structure of this thesis demonstrates the coherence of a phenomenological approach across the works of Robbe-Grillet. The introduction contextualises the
contribution of the thesis, indicating oversights to be rectified in existing studies. The first chapter charts
the development of phenomenology highlighting areas of relevance to the insights outlined in the thesis. Chapter two demonstrates that both the phenomenological reduction, and Robbe-Grillet's formal strategies of challenging
cultural expectations, result in a "making strange" of perceptual experience, with repercussions for the subversion of conventional fictional and filmic narratives.
Subsequent chapters explore further consequences of the reduction, beginning in chapter three with the embodiment
of consciousness which impacts upon the presentation of
narrative perspective in Robbe-Grillet's film and fiction. The fourth chapter examines Robbe-Grillet's rendering of a lived experience of time, rather than an objective
measurement of it, thus analysing another consequence of embodied existence and of the "making strange" that results from undermining cultural expectations. Another mode of
bodily existence, sexuality, was neglected in previous
phenomenological studies, and is examined in the fifth chapter, in the light of feminist readings of phenomenology making a new contribution in its reassessment of the debates around cultural stereotypes and subversion. Chapter six examines the complex relations surrounding intersubjectivity, another area not previously addressed, and elucidates the problematics of Robbe-Grilletian inter-human relationships,
The thesis concludes that earlier phenomenological studies
have not fully worked through all of the implications of the phenomenological reduction in Robbe-Grillet's
works in terms of cultural subversion, nor have they accounted fully for the interdependency of various modes
of human embodiment( perception, situation in space
and time, sexuality and intersubjectivity) as they are enacted in Robbe-Grillet's narratives
L’INVISIBLE ET LE VISIBLE SELON ALAIN ROBBE-GRILLET (The Invisible and the Visible in the Work of Alain Robbe–Grillet)
The present text is an attempt to re-read Robbe-Grillet’s Jealousy in the perspective of what modern psychology calls “the theory of mind”. The author attempts to show that Robbe-Grillet’s literary procedure consists, at least in part, in presenting the characters as deprived of inner mental states, thus approaching the theory of “mindblindness”, presented in a different context, by the psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen
Abstract: We will try to analyze the space’s and the object’s representation in Alain Robbe-Grillet’s works as part of a problem about the identity. If the nouveau romancier breaks with the traditional representation forms of the novel’s universe, it’s because he plays constantly with the signs that enable to determine the identity of the décor’s elements. Thus, we will expose some dialectical tensions by which the author perceive and conceive the space and its objects, in order to show that his techniques constitute a poetics of the reconstruction. Afekt a exteriorita: Robbe-Grilletova sartrovská inspirace || Affect and Exteriority: Sartrian Inspiration of Alain Robbe-Grillet
In the present text, the author focuses on Sartre’s influence on the work of Alain Robbe-Grillet. Sartre’s text that seems to have represented a major source of inspiration for Robbe-Grillet’s writing is
a short 1939 essay entitled „Intentionality: A Fundamental Idea of Husserl’s Phenomenology“, where
Sartre refuses the idea of knowledge as an absorption of objects in subject’s interiority. In the second
part of the present paper, the author offers a close reading of Robbe-Grillet’s Jealousy to support this
view, concentrating in particular on the problem of affectivit
Literatura francesa. This paper intends, starting with the Analysis of the Discourse (FIORIN, 1999), to reflect about transformations in the Alain Robbe-Grillet’s poetic, celebrated author of the Nouveau Roman. We analyse his vinculations with the modern writing and her auto-reference, in spite of the entirety of his work, which permits an understending of a growing referenciality. Key words: Robbe-Grillet. In the footsteps of Alain Robbe-Grillet: 1989. “Robbe-Grillet’s week” at Salamanca University.
In October 1989, French writer Alain Robbe-Grillet visited Salamanca Université after

Robbe-Grillet in Barthes. Not so close, not too far
Pourtant, si Barthes avait “tué” l’auteur –encore qu’il a lui-même permis son retour textuel–; si Robbe-Grillet l’avait bien dissimulé dans ses romans, les deux vont cheminer ensemble vers le “romanesque”.Barthes was one of the first to support Robbe-Grillet's first texts, just as Robbe-Grillet was one of the first to publicly highlight the status of Barthes' as a writer, non only critic and semiologist. From 1945 to 1980, the year of Barthes' premature death, the presence of Robbe-Grillet's writing in Barthesian reflections will be evident, not only in the articles included in the Critical Essays, but in 29 texts by Barthes. The objective in this study is to show the different modulations of this critical-literary approach, and to address the misunderstandings that have arisen. Barthes would have liked the primacy of the object to be maintained, devoid of any psychology, the annulment of meaning, in the way proposed in Degree zero. However, although Barthes has “killed” the author –although he himself allowed his textual return–; although Robbe-Grillet has hidden it well in his novels, the two will walk together towards the “Romanesque”

Robbe-Grillet's métaphoricité fantôme
Alain Robbe-Grillet made his initial reputation among French writers not only through his controversial first novels, but also through a number of essays published collectively under the title of Pour un Nouveau Roman . In these essays, Robbe-Grillet pronounced an absolute condemnation of metaphor in the novel; this condemnation has since been prominently featured in theoretical arguments focusing on "zero-degree" writing. However, Robbe-Grillet has since written fictions which are hardly consistent with his earlier doctrine, and Topologie d'une cité fantôme appears, if anything, to embrace metaphor, and thus to point to a new direction in Robbe-Grillet's work, a direction closer to that of Simon and Ricardou
Alain Robbe-Grillet. Les Sables mouvants du texte
Alain Robbe-Grillet is often regarded as the leader of the French New Novel, a 20th century literary movement breaking with literary realism. A former scientist, Robbe-Grillet invents a new Real, where imagination, memories, fantasies and dreams are given a power somehow superior to that of tangible reality. The text becomes a laboratory, where the author performs experiments with language. Runs, a proliferating intertextuality and constant slidings in the text often mislead the reader. Moreover, and especially since the publishing of three pseudo-autobiographical books, Robbe-Grillet blurs the relation between the concepts of author, narrator and character, making it difficult to seize the Subject at work in an often ironical text. This text appears as a protective and self-defensive envelope of words, and recalls a motherly entity, a fantasy of self-engenderment.Nevertheless, self-defense underlies a feeling of guilt. According to Roland Barthes, writers, handling the mother-tongue, could be regarded as playing with the body of the mother, an activity that criticism often connects to what psycho-analysis calls an OEdipus complex. However controversial the psycho-analytical approach of literature may be, the Robbe-Grillet text invites and justifies such a reading. Sado-erotic fantasies, fetishism, clear allusions to Freudian or Lacanian themes reinforce the idea that psychoanalysis is one of the main threads in the Robbe-Grillet discourse. Meanwhile, many traps in the text tend to deconstruct psycho-analytical criticism. Robbe-Grillet claims he is conscious that he lives in what he calls a "post-freudian society" and denies psycho-analysis as an authority. One could consider psycho-analysis as religion, another target of the Robbe-Grillet text, patriarchal authorities defining a certain number of taboos, among them that of incest. Yet, the attacks against them can be understood as an ultimate attempt to destroy the father-image, and expose a genuine search for the lost paradise of the womb.Through an analysis of the relation to the Real, the function of intertextuality, guilt and the psychoanalytical discourse in Robbe-Grillet's works from Un régicide to Les Derniers Jours de Corinthe, this study tries to establish that the exposition of incest, even under cover of an implicit critique of psychoanalysis, is still a way to keep the fantasy alive; in other words, to go from the couch to the bed and not the opposite.</p
