Diffusion tensor imaging in early Alzheimer's disease.
Our aim was to investigate the extent of white matter tissue damage in patients with early Alzheimer disease (AD) using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI). Although AD pathology mainly affects cortical grey matter, previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies showed that changes also exist in the white matter (WM). However, the nature of AD-associated WM damage is still unclear. Conventional and DTI examinations (b=1000 s/mm2, 25 directions) were obtained from 12 patients with early AD (Mini Mental State Examination [MMSE] score=27, Grober and Buschke test score=33.2, digit span score=5.6) and 12 sex- and age-matched volunteers. The right and left mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) of several WM regions were pooled in each patient and control, and compared between the two groups. Volumes of the whole brain and degree of atrophy of the temporal lobe were compared between the two groups. In AD, MD was increased in the splenium of the corpus callosum and in the WM in the frontal and parietal lobes. FA was bilaterally decreased in the WM of the temporal lobe, the frontal lobe and the splenium compared with corresponding regions in controls. Values in other areas (occipital area, superior temporal area, cingulum, internal capsule, and genu of the corpus callosum) were not different between patients and controls. No correlations were found between the MMSE score and the anisotropy indices. Findings of DTI reveal abnormalities in the frontal and temporal WM in early AD patients. These changes are compatible with early temporal-to-frontal disconnections
”You have to Make up your own Story Here”. Identities in Cyberspace from Twitter to Second Life
The paper opens the discussion on the contemporaneity of the Internet in human life. Today our lives online are not something separate from our lives offline: both are an inherent part of our existence. The Author analyzed the identity and presentation of self in cyberspace from Twitter to Second Life (SL) contexts in terms of: expressions given; embellishment as a minor form of persona adoption; dividing the self; conforming and ‘fitting in’; and masking, anonymity and pseudonimity.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. In graancirkelkringen
In this fascinating book Meder explains how stories can grow into irrefutable exempla of truth. Gradually, they can become the building blocks of a belief system, and determine people's conduct and worldview. All the elementary questions are dealt with from different perspectives: who makes the crop circles? What do the farmers think of them? How are the crop circles made and to what purpose? What positions do journalists take? Are there any messages to be found in crop circles, and if so, how can they be decoded? What kind of research do the cereologists perform in the field? If people believe in supernatural or extraterrestrial interference, what else do they believe in? Why do the croppies and cereologists think they are right, and what arguments do sceptics have to think them wrong? The author draws comparisons between the phenomenon in Britain and the Netherlands. The book also contains a brief survey into the acclaimed ancient history of crop circles. Although it is not the objective of the book to determine the absolute truth about crop circles, in the end the readers will be provided with all the pros and cons in the debate to make up their own mind

Summary
Aims. A prophylaxis program for the early detection of colorectal cancer carried out by our department since the year 2000 has been extended to include people aged 65 and older. The subjects were asked additional questions regarding their dietary habits and possible coexistence of type 2 diabetes, and women were asked about the use of hormone replacement therapy. A physical examination, including measurements of nutritional status, was conducted. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of overweight, obesity, type 2 diabetes and hormone replacement therapy on the incidence of cancers and adenomas detected by colonoscopy screening in people aged 65 and older.
Methods. The study method was standard colonoscopy screening conducted in people aged 65 and older, in whom no clinical signs suggesting the presence of colorectal cancer were observed. The subjects examined provided their answers to a number of questions related to coexisting conditions and medicines taken, and women were asked about their use of hormone replacement therapy in the past. Every subject underwent a thorough physical examination that included basic anthropometric measurements.
Results. Subjects with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and women who had used hormone replacement therapy had a greater risk of developing colorectal cancer.
Conclusions. The increased risk of colorectal cancer in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as women undergoing hormone replacement therapy, may be associated with insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). This polypeptide shows a similarity to insulin, is an active compound in the process of carcinogenesis and plays a role in the regulation of cell growth, proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Elucidating the molecular mechanism of action of IGF-1 is important for identifying the causes of tumorigenesis and can also be of significance for the future development of effective methods of treating malignancies.

Abstract
Introduction. Colonoscopy screening for the early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC), despite many limitations, is widely used in the prevention of this most common digestive tract malignancy due to some important advantages. CRC is a nutrition-dependent disease. It is estimated that implementing rational nutrition as part of health promotion activities during childhood and continuing it in the adult life could reduce the morbidity and mortality of colon and rectal cancer. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of dietary habits on the incidence of colorectal adenomas and cancers in the population aged 65+ subjected to colonoscopy screening.
Methods. The study method was standard colonoscopy screening conducted in subjects aged 65+ in whom no clinical signs of CRC were observed. The subjects were also assessed for their nutrition and the frequency of consumption of selected products, including red meat, vegetables, fruit and fried foods, using a standardized questionnaire prepared in cooperation with the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Results. Most CRC detections and the greatest number of excised adenomas were reported in subjects consuming vegetables as rarely as several times per year.
Conclusions. Consumption of vegetables, among other foods, as part of rational nutrition from childhood through adult life may reduce the morbidity and mortality due to CRC.

Research on Housing Planning Development Design in Mountainous Area: Difference between China and Hawaii
With the rapid development of urbanization in China, more and more houses are being put up; however, the land resources available are quite limited. As a result, the problem of residential development has become a contradiction between man and land. Owing to the feature of this development situation, and the fact that the majority of land resources are in the form of mountains or hills, people have to consider how to develop mountainous areas to increase the living space. However, in the process of building mountainous residential buildings, the protection of land and environmental resources is often neglected due to the pursuit of the maximization of commodity interests and the large demolition and construction of land resources in mountainous areas, which result in the loss of land resources and the occurrence of various consequent natural disasters.
Therefore, the author of this dissertation takes the opportunity of this dualdegree training program between Tongji University and the University of Hawaii, compares the similarities and differences of the development of residential house between China and Hawaii, and draws vantages and advantages from mountainous or hillside residential development in Hawaii to explore how to solve and improve the development of China’s domestic mountainous residential houses and the contradiction between man and land to provide guidance for the sustainable construction of new rural housing in mountainous areas by examining the characteristics and ideas of mountainous and hillside houses of development in Hawaii.
This present thesis is divided into eight chapters. Chapter One serves as the introduction, which mainly introduces the background, purpose and significance of the research. Chapter Two presents the related theoretical research, which mainly discusses related domestic and foreign theoretical research on the use and development of mountainous areas and mountain cities from all ages, and makes a detailed introduction to the contents of theoretical research based on the theories of mountainous residential settlements. Chapter Three, the Historical Development of the Mountainous Residences in Hawaii and Mainland China, focuses on and compares the characteristics of the historical development of the mountainous residential areas and the historical process of the use of mountainous areas in the United States and China, and compares the differences between the two regions through the perspectives of residential layout model, courtyard and public space as well as road development, and concludes that there is a fundamental similarity between them, namely, mountainous areas were by no means easy to reach before there emerged powered means of transport. Chapter Four, the Modern Planning Development of the Mountainous Residences in Hawaii and the Development of Domestic Modern Mountainous Residences, focuses on and compares the planning characteristics and mountain utilization features in the development of modern mountainous residential areas in Hawaii, the United States and in China to find out the differences and draw the surface similarities in the use of cluster layout model in mountainous areas by means of progressive land use mechanism and planned construction modes. Chapter Five, a Comparison of the Design Norms for Mountain Residential Buildings in Hawaii and in China, mainly studies the classification as well as planning and designing norms of the residential lands in Hawaii and China, summarizes several typical directions to compare their difference and reaches the conclusion that China can learn and benefit from some norms in Hawaii. Chapter Six, A Case Study of the Practices and Characteristics of Sloping Land and Mountainous Residences in Oahu Region, Hawaii, summarizes the characteristics and features of the planning and construction of the two categories of mountainous and hillside residential areas in Hawaii. Chapter Seven, the Planning and Design of Mountainous Residential Buildings in FengGang Township, completes the design of renewal, mainly targeted at Mainland China’s current mountainous residential situation to provide innovative tips and renewal programs for the planning and design of China’s mountainous and hillside residential areas. Chapter Eight, Conclusion and Prospects, puts forward three guiding opinions for the sustainable development planning model of the new type of mountainous and hillside residences in China, looking forward to further and more detailed research in the future.
The whole thesis illustrates the author’s reflections on the comparison of mountainous and hillside residential buildings between Hawaii and Mainland China and the consequent conclusions. Due to the limit of time and the limited vision of the author, there is still some room to be desired
In the present study an attempt is made to identify the classification of Schiller's theory of aesthetic education, focussing on the central educational problem of creating and preserving human totality. Given that an only Kantian or only Hegelian reading does not seem to be sufficient for detecting the classification of Schiller’s Theorie, an attempt was made to solve disagreements which would remain in an only Kantian or only Hegelian reading by applying the Hylemorphistic reading. A Hylemorphistic reading seems appropriate since it does assume a co-principiality of form and matter and Schiller’s On the Aesthetic Education of Man in a Series of Letters also gives clear indications that the author himself believed in the co-principiality of form and matter. The basic fundament of this analysis is laid by the four dimensions of Schiller’s Theory on the Aesthetic Education, which are: First, the subject theoretical dimension; Second, the socio-critical dimension; Third, the art theoretical dimension and fourth, the educational dimension which synthesizes the first three dimension with a view to the educational theory and practice.
The subject theoretical dimension expresses Schiller’s hylemorphistic approach in an especially anthropological manner in the formal and material impulsion, yet also other anthropological aspects like Person and Condition, Reason and Sensuousness are touched by it. In the socio-critical dimension, Hylemorphism is displayed in Schiller’s dialectic of materialism and idealism. In the art theoretical dimension, it basically defines the essential, crucial moment of artistic work: The interplay of form and matter. Finally, the educational dimension expresses Schiller’s hylemorphistic approach particularly clear in assembling material and formal education.
Each dimension asks for totality in a contextual way. The subject theoretical dimension focusses on analyzing the interaction of formal and material impulsion, sensuousness and reason, person and condition, while the socio-critical dimension asks for the possibility of transforming a state based on nature (Naturstaat) into a state based on reason (Vernunftstaat). The art-theoretical dimension displays the three central art-theoretical dimensions of Schiller’s On the aesthetic Education of Man, Balance, Harmony, Beauty. Here, he partially already refers to the role of these three moments for creating and preserving human totality.
This study closes by transferring its results into an educational synthesis and by depicting that only the aesthetic game's beauty may enable humans to feel as a totality, to feel as a unit, to feel free
