Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Madrid, SpainThis paper is part of the reflection initiated in 2016 following the20th anniversary of the Public Understanding of Science Journal, analyzing both the thematic evolution of the journal itself andbroader aspects of the evolution of thefield. Here, we aim toanalyze developments in PUS based on all the papers publishedin thefield’s two major journals: Science Communication andPublic Understanding of Science. We propose to study thefieldbased on the epistemic relations established between textsresulting from the references they include. Thus, although theaforementioned journals constitute our source of information, byincorporating in the analysis the references of all the papers inthese journals–which include books and other journals–wesignificantly expand the scope and build the epistemic links thatare established by the texts analyzed in a very specific way.
Is the Emerging Source Citation Index an aid to assess the citation impact in social science and humanities?
This paper aims to analyze the implications of the Emerging Source Citation Index (ESCI), from Clarivate Analytics, as an assessment tool. Based on the evidence that the ESCI has expanded publication coverage, primarily in the social science and humanities, this study poses the following questions. How much has coverage been expanded by field and subject category? What effect has inclusion had on impact factors? Have they risen significantly in any discipline? Is subscribing to this product worthwhile? Should it be taken into consideration for assessment purposes? The results obtained show that sub-fields such as Ethics, Poetry, Cultural Studies or Asian Studies improve their visibility with the inclusion of journals in ESCI. Although at the scientific level, CSEC does not seem to improve the evaluation of impact measurement, this new citation index can provide relevant information for evaluation at the micro and meso level. Since it includes widely cited documents (in both the top 1% and top 10%), in many disciplines not indexed in the core collection the use of this source can improve the completeness and quality of the analysis of citations from individual groups or institutions in subfields such as Poetry, Cultural studies or Asian studies. It is advisable to carry out periodic studies to analyse the evolution of the impact since, in disciplines with a reduced production and a low number of citations, the data are very sensitive to variations (especially if they are recent publications). This work was carried out during a research stay at the University of Vienna financed with funds from the Carlos III University of Madrid, SpainPeer reviewe
Open access initiatives in European universities: analysis of their implementation and the visibility of publications in the YERUN network
In this paper, the authors analyse the open access (OA) output of the universities in YERUN (the Young European Research Universities Network) and their institutional documentation of their own OA situation. The period from 2009 to 2019 was selected for the bibliometric analysis. The full register of publications for the YERUN universities was downloaded from Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection, and a set of bibliometric analyses was performed to provide an evidence-based response to the research questions (example: Do YERUN universities follow publication patterns similar to those of their countries of origin? How does OA affect the impact of scientific publications? What types of OA are used at each institution? Is there a relationship between specialization and OA?). The bibliometric analyses looked at four dimensions: activity and context indicators; collaboration indicators; specialization indicators; OA types and impact indicators. The document analysis included variables related to infrastructure, specific support actions, institutional policies and OA information availability. The paper concludes that the institutional measures and actions fostering OA identified on universities’ websites bear a correspondence with the bibliometric data. YERUN institutions have higher rates of OA publications than do their host countries, with a clear preference for the green route. OA publications are systematically more cited than non-OA publications, and green OA has more impact than do other types of OA. Also, no relationship was found between specialization and OA publication rate.Peer reviewe
The practical implementation of open access policies and mandates in Spanish public universities
This paper analyses the open access (OA) production of Spanish public universities from 2011 to 2020 to achieve the following objectives: (i) to identify and analyse policies, strategies and mandates for the promotion of open access; (ii) to analyse practices related to open access of scientific publications, (iii) to explore methodologies that allow identifying variables related to open access of publications. The procedure followed consists of three phases: first, the Spanish regulation on open access is analysed; second, bibliometric techniques are applied to obtain a series of indicators related to open access of publications indexed in the web of science core collection; third, a statistical analysis based on a classification tree of variables is proposed. The results obtained show that the institutional measures and actions to promote OA identified in the policies and mandates of the universities correspond to the bibliometric data. Spanish public universities have higher rates of OA publications, with a clear preference for Green Published and DOAJ Gold publications. OA publications are systematically more cited than non-OA publications (with Green Accepted in the lead), and there is a strong relationship between visibility, funding and open access. It has also been observed that the variables that best predict whether the percentage of OA publications of a university is above average are: the proportion of publications in DOAJ Gold, the impact received by Hybrid publications and the percentage of documents in the Bronze way.Peer reviewe
Brazilian Neuroscience research areas: a bibliometric analysis from 2006 to 2013
Bibliometrics is used to examine the different branches of Brazilian Neurosciences research, the annual advancement of specialization, and the relationship between scientific categories and author productivity through 9655 articles published on Web of Science from 2006 to 2013. Seventy-one areas are identified that form part of the Transdisciplinarity of Brazilian Neurosciences scientific output as well as the division between clinical research and basic and experimental research. The three most important areas identified were Neurosciences (higher frequency and co-occurrence, especially with “experimental” subjects), Psychiatry (present in the first three years of the survey) and Clinical Neurology (associated with other medical subjects, as with Psychiatry), in addition to significant subjects aimed at behavioral studies. Ninety-two author clusters were identified, with notable differences between the publishing habits of the most and least productive authors. The researchers specialize in certain subjects, with more groups investigating the fields of Psychology, Psychiatry and Occupational Health.Peer reviewe
Spanish Scientific Output in Communication Sciences in WOS. The Scientific Journals in SSCI (2007-12)
Although the field of Communication Sciences has been slower to organize in Spain than in other European countries and the United States, in recent years it has shown a clear tendency to growth. One way to trace this process is by analyzing scientific production, and this paper focuses on this aspect. Using bibliometric methods, we analyze scientific journals and papers indexed in Thomson Reuter’s international database, the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) for Communication. While the focus of the study is Spanish scientific output, the results are related to international activities in this field. The three Spanish journals included in SSCI in recent years: «Comunicar», «Comunicación y Sociedad» and «Estudios sobre el Mensaje Periodístico» were studied in detail. The results show that Spain plays an important role in Communcation journal publishing (4th in the world) and as a producer of scientific papers (6th in the world), with a remarkable evolution, in quantitative terms, especially in the last five years. The inclusion of these three Spanish journals in the international database has been an important contribution to the country's visibility in this field, but there is still a need to promote international collaboration to achieve greater impact and openness in the scientific community
AbstractScience, Technology and Society (STS) field shows a clear consolidation, manifested in the existence of journals, conferences, a common language and the possibility of identifying a set of actors belonging to him. However, the demarcation of the field is not easy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present a new methodology to identify and analyze the STS publications in the world and particularly in Latin America. Using the Web of Science database, 47,349 documents (4.6% from Latin America) where recovered and the main bibliometric indicators of activity and specialization were obtained. To study the thematic and the intertextual relationships of publications, bibliographic coupling techniques — to identify “Bibliographical clusters”— were used. Through this approach we try to know the thematic structure of STS research and analyze their dynamics over time.</jats:p
University excellence initiatives in Spain, a possible strategy for optimising resources and improving local performance
This article analyses Spain's Campus of International Excellence (CEI) Programme and its potential for raising the visibility of the country's universities, optimising resources and intensifying interaction with the local surrounds. The examples studied are the UAM–CSIC (Autonomous University of Madrid + National Research Council) and EUSKAMPUS (University of the Basque Country + Donostia International Physics Center) CEIs. The main characteristics, mission and aims of these initiatives are discussed. The results are analysed in terms of the papers published in journals listed in international databases (Web of Science). The analysis compares each university's individual output to the results obtained by these inter-institutional alliances. The improvement observed in all the indicators studied highlights the importance of joining forces to attain higher visibility.Peer reviewe
¿Qué publica Brasil en Biblioteconomía y Documentación? Estudio de la producción internacional y análisis de Clúster Bibliográficos (Web of Science 2000-2014)
This article analyses publications from Brazil in Library and Information Science (Web of Science). The main objectives are: to know the production’s characteristics, to analyze the country’s profile of activity and to detect the documentary corpus used as a conceptual framework. The methodology consists of two stages. At first, papers were collected and the main bibliometric indicators of activity, specialization and collaboration were obtained. Bibliographic coupling method was used in the second stage to detect "Bibliographical communities" with common references. The results show that 910 documents have been published by Brazilian centers between 2000 and 2014, especially in Portuguese, wherein the main dissemination ways are national magazines. Different bibliographic clusters were detected with specific topics, authors and related reference: Open Access studies, information retrieval, metric studies, knowledge organization and scientometrics. The latter community is the most international, due to both consumption and diffusion magazines.Neste trabalho analisam-se as publicações do Brasil em Library and Information Science da Web of Science.
