Orden y violencia después de 35 años: pistas pecautianas para la investigación contemporánea
No full textThis article offers a user manual for contemporary readers of Order and violence. It reconstructs the book’s argument based on two theses on the disarticulation of society and politics in Colombia. Subsequently, it presents four implications of this argument for contemporary research. The first three—regional comparatism, a broad approach to democracy, and a strong version of the postulate of social self-orga- nization—form the basis of the “Pécaut method.” The fourth applies this method to some aspects of the relationship between violence and politics—state weakness, clientelistic networks, and the privatization of the use of force—that classical explanations tend to naturalize.El presente artículo ofrece un manual de usuario para los lectores contemporáneos de Orden y violencia. Reconstruye el argumento del libro a partir de dos tesis sobre la desarticulación de la sociedad y de la política en Colombia. Luego, presenta cuatro implicaciones de este argumento para la investigación con- temporánea. Las tres primeras —comparatismo regional, enfoque amplio sobre la democracia y versión fuerte del postulado de la autoorganización de lo social— forman la base del “método Pécaut”. La cuarta aplica este método a algunos aspectos de la relación entre violencia y política —la debilidad estatal, las redes clientelares y la privatización del uso de la fuerza— que las explicaciones clásicas suelen naturalizar

No full textNational audienceLe titre de cet essai prête au même malentendu que celui de son aîné, L'Homme pluriel (Lahire, 1999). Certains lecteurs ayant pris celui-ci pour une apologie du pluralisme, l'auteur avait été forcé de reconnaitre que ce n'était " pas un très bon titre " (Duvoux, 2009). Mettant cette fois le monde au pluriel, Bernard Lahire reprend apparemment le risque de l'équivoque en connaissance de cause. Si, dans ce nouvel essai, il n'est toujours pas question de pluralisme, que signifie alors le pluriel du titre ? Que le monde est observable grâce à des focales variables ; qu'il n'est pas multiple et discontinu, mais flou. Différents angles de champ font voir différentes choses, selon le degré de précision attendu. Tous ces angles ont cependant, pour l'auteur, une égale dignité scientifique. Le " géométral de toutes les perspectives " ne pouvant plus être " l'idée régulatrice de la recherche " qu'il a été naguère, il nous faut un nouveau principe fédérateur, afin de conduire les sciences sociales à l'unité. Pour que les sociologues continuent de faire œuvre commune, Bernard Lahire leur propose de tendre à " l'équilibre " entre la variété des focales qu'ils emploient et les propriétés des êtres humains qu'ils surprennent dans leur objectif. Bernard Lahire pense avoir atteint, lui-même, ce point d'équilibre. On peut se demander si c'est le cas et dans le cas contraire, si l'auteur a au moins eu raison de poser le problème dans ces termes. Je répondrai non à la première question, mais oui à la seconde, bien que ce soit pour d'autres raisons que l'auteur
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
