Enforcing cooperation in public goods games : Is one punisher enough?
We experimentally investigate a finitely repeated public goods game setting where, in each round, access to sanctioning power is exclusively awarded to one single player per group. We show that our central ‘Top Contributors as Punishers’ institution – a mechanism by which a player needs to be the highest contributor in her group in order to earn the right to sanction others – is extremely effective in raising cooperation and welfare due to turnover in the top contributor role and to top contributors’ willingness to substantially sanction others. Our findings yield implications for the design of mechanisms intended to foster cooperation in social dilemma environments
Legitimate punishment, feedback, and the enforcement of cooperation
In dealing with peer punishment as a cooperation enforcement device, laboratory studies have typically concentrated on discretionary sanctioning, allowing players to castigate each other arbitrarily. By contrast, in real life punishments are often meted out only insofar as punishers are entitled to punish and punishees deserve to be punished. We provide an experimental test for this 'legitimate punishment' institution and show that it yields substantial benefits to cooperation and efficiency gains, compared to a classic, 'vigilante justice' institution. We also focus on the role of feedback and we interestingly find that removing the information over high contributors' choices is sufficient to generate a dramatic decline in cooperation rates and earnings. This interaction result implies that providing feedback over virtuous behavior in the group is necessary to make a legitimate punishment scheme effective. © 2012 Elsevier Inc
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

El juego en la composición escénica. La intervención lúdica en los procedimientos de creación teatral.

Río Negro, Argentina.This research unfolds in my imagination from an impulse, its origin stemming from a genuine, captivating, creative, and inspiring experience. In theatrical work, involving body, mind, spirit, and imagination, a reflection arose on stage composition and how it can be approached, how many forms there are, how many methods, techniques, paths, styles, and categories. At that very moment, I came to the conclusion that it would be impossible to address all the paths, but perhaps it wouldn't be impossible to remember the explorations I had gone through as a person, in which I felt emotions, made decisions, expressed my creativity, managed to expand my imagination, felt independent to compose individually and in groups, and took risks. In that moment, the image appeared in my mind, along with the sensation of freedom in my body. I remembered that everything was chaos, and to find myself in that chaos, I had to make a decision, and for that, I needed courage. To break through the boundaries of convention, it is necessary to understand convention in all its aspects, because then we, as artists, will be able to recognize when we transgress the established order, supported by creativity and imagination as pillars of the compositional movement. Knowing the rules of the game gives us the possibility of being different in time, of having a different energy; but not only can we create a time and space with its own unique tendency by knowing the rules, it also allows us to overcome the obstacles that cross our path as artists. It invites us to creatively combine these rules so that we may find other paths, ways, emotions, sensations, images, and inspiration.
From this reflection arises a mystery related to stage composition, the procedures of theatrical creation, the role of the actress/actor, of direction, of the dramatic work, and its connection to the world of play.La presente investigación se despliega en mi imaginación a partir de un impulso, su origen deviene de una experiencia genuina, cautivante, creativa e inspiradora. En el quehacer teatral, con el cuerpo, la mente, el espíritu y la imaginación, surgió la reflexión sobre la composición escénica y cómo se puede abordar, cuántas formas existen, cuántos métodos, técnicas, caminos, estilos categorías. En el mismo instante llegué a la conclusión que sería imposible abordar todos los caminos, pero tal vez no sería imposible recordar cuáles exploraciones me habían atravesado como persona, en las que sentí emociones, tomé decisiones, expresé mi creatividad, logré expandir mi imaginación, sentí independencia para componer de manera individual y grupal, me arriesgué. En ese minuto apareció la imagen en mi mente y la sensación de libertad en mi cuerpo, recordé que todo era un caos y para encontrarme en ese caos tenía que tomar una decisión, y para ello necesité de coraje. Para atravesar los límites de lo convencional es necesario conocer lo convencional en todos sus aspectos, porque luego podremos darnos cuenta como artistas cuando transgredimos lo establecido con el apoyo de la creatividad y la imaginación como pilares del movimiento de composición. Conocer las reglas del juego nos da la posibilidad de ser en el tiempo de otra manera, tener distinta energía; pero no solo por conocer las reglas podemos crear un tiempo y espacio con su propia tendencia, sino que también nos permite atravesar los obstáculos que se nos cruzan en el camino como artistas. Nos invita a combinar creativamente esas reglas para que encontremos otros caminos, maneras, emociones, sensaciones, imágenes, inspiración.
De esta reflexión surge una incógnita relacionada con la composición escénica, los procedimientos de creación teatral, el rol de la actriz/actor, de la dirección, de la obra dramática y su vínculo con el mundo lúdico
Reclamações ambientais em Aveiro, Portugal: atores, preocupações, padrão territorial e resoluções
This paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental
issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between
2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning
and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces
the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental
grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by
local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental
quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of
the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case
study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth
section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal
evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems
and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This
information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental
quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance

The subject of this article is the issue of the historicity of the figure of Daniel, who is the main character of the biblical book bearing his name. The question of whether Daniel is a historical or just a literary figure is important because it influences the exegesis of the text of the Book of Daniel. First, the author will indicate the reasons for questioning the historicity of Daniel, and then he will present different approaches to interpreting the content of the Book of Daniel.Przedmiotem artykułu jest kwestia historyczności postaci Daniela, który jest głównym bohaterem księgi biblijnej noszącej jego imię. Pytanie o to, czy Daniel jest postacią historyczną, czy tylko literacką, jest ważne z tego powodu, że ma wpływ na egzegezę tekstu Księgi Daniela. Interactions between Reflection and Praxis in the History of Economic Thought. The case of the Franciscan Cicles from XIII Century Assisi to the Present
Resumen: Daniela Parisi analiza el impacto de la vida de San F rancisco de Asís desde la perspectiva de la historia del pensamiento económico. Haciendo referencia particularmente a la atención otorgada en los círculos franciscanos a los signos de los tiempos, la autora traza el camino desde la vida de San Francisco, pasando por la vida de la Orden hasta el presente, y revela los orígenes del movimiento franciscano como un intento de reforma social y religiosa. En primer lugar, el artículo presenta la vida que llevó San Francisco como una “pobreza material voluntaria” en el contexto de los cambios socio-económicos que tuvieron lugar en el siglo XIII, con el advenimiento de la sociedad comercial. Luego, explica cómo la propuesta de San Francisco creció hasta convertirse en una orden religiosa. Finalmente, el artículo intenta iluminar aquellos aspectos en que la Orden Franciscana puede todavía considerarse un signo de los tiempos a través de una existencia comprometida con la pobreza, eliminando lo superfluo de nuestra vida y viviendo en consonancia con el Evangelio.Abstract: Daniela Parisi analyses the impact of the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, from the perspective of the history of economic thought. By referring in particular to the attention given in Franciscan circles to the signs of times, the author draws the path from Saint Francis’s life to the life of the Order until the present, and reveals the origins of the Franciscan movement as an attempt for social and religious reformation. First, the article presents St. Francis’s life of a “voluntary material poverty” in the context of the social and economic changes that took place in the XIII century, with the rise of the commercial society. Then, the author explains how St. Francis’ proposal grew into an Order. Finally, the article aims at illuminating the aspects in which the Franciscan Order can be still considered a sign of the times by living the commitment to poverty and minority, eliminating the superfluous from our lives and living close to the Gospel
