    Review of The Afterlife of Little Women by Beverly Lyon Clark

    In 1871, a young girl fleeing the Chicago fire saves a single item from the flames: a copy of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. More than a century later, another young girl pays homage to this beloved text by composing the Louisa May Alcott Cookbook (1985), a selection of recipes for foods mentioned in Little Women, published in the year its nine-year-old author turns twelve. In between these two events, Alcott’s head is featured on a five-cent stamp, a ship is named after her, and a quartet of chimps at the Bronx Zoo is christened Amy, Beth, Jo, and Meg in honor of Little Women’s central characters—not once, not twice, but three times between 1952 and 1960. Meanwhile, a couple of overzealous translators, not content merely to convert Alcott’s most famous story into French and Dutch, revise the ending to make it conclude just as many fans (then and now) wish it would: Jo marries Laurie, not that old fuddy-duddy Professor Bhaer (who, by the way, was played by William Shatner in the 1978 television version of Little Women)

    There is a close relationship between literature and life because the social function of literature is how it involves itself in people\u27s lives. The purpose of this research is to find out the sociology of literature, which examines it through three contexts, first, the social context of the author; second, literature as a mirror of society; third, the social function of literature in the novel Siti Nurbaya by Marah Rusli. The method in this research uses descriptive qualitative. In this case, the writer first describes the social context of Marah Rusli\u27s novel Siti Nurbaya, then analyzes the content of the novel and then looks at the relationship between the problems in the novel, and then adjusts it to socio-cultural conditions. The results of the analysis show that Siti Nurbaya\u27s novel, in terms of the author\u27s social context, that in Siti Nurbaya\u27s novel, is based on the bad experience of the author, Marah Rusli. Siti Nurbaya\u27s novel reflects the many problems of society in Siti Nurbaya\u27s era, such as polygamy, pride in nobility, customs in Padang, child sacrifices for their parents, and so on.     Abstract: Internalization of Islamic Education in Controlling Angry Emotions. This study aims to describe how angry emotions can be controlled through the theory of Internalizing Islamic Education. Internalization of Islamic Education introduces 5 strategies in changing one's mindset and behavior including the exemplary strategy, the habituation strategy, the strategy of giving advice, the strategy of giving promises and threats and self-awareness. Through qualitative methods this study describes how the internalization of Islamic education is realized in the control of angry emotions. Interview and observation techniques (observations) are used by the author in studying how the internalization process takes place so that Islamic education has a role in controlling emotions. The conclusion is that exemplary strategies have a great effect in giving an example to individuals in controlling emotions, habitualizing strategies and giving advice are also needed in dealing with someone who is overflowing with angry emotions, bearing in mind that anger causes many negative effects such as saying harsh, cursing, damaging things to commit murder, besides that the promise and threat strategy also has a role in controlling angry emotions because if a person instills religious values in his heart and implements it will certainly remember that someone who can restrain his anger will benefit and be promised a heaven like the surrender of the good example. exemplified by the prophets. And no less important is self-awareness that limits one's emotional overflow.Abstrak: Internalisasi Pendidikan Islam dalam Pengendalian Emosi Marah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendiskripsikan bagaimana emosi marah dapat dikendalikan melalui teori Internalisasi Pendidikan Islam. Internalisasi Pendidikan Islam mengenalkan 5 strategi dalam mengubah pola pikir dan perilaku seseorang diantaranya adalah strategi keteladanan, strategi pembiasaan, strategi pemberian nasihat, strategi pemberian janji dan ancaman serta kesadaran diri. Melalui metode kualitatif penelitian ini mendiskripsikan bagaimana internalisasi pendidikan Islam tersebut terealisasi dalam pengendalian emosi marah. Teknik wawancara dan observasi (pengamatan) digunakan oleh penulis dalam mengkaji bagaimana proses internalisasi itu berlangsung sehingga pendidikan Islam memiliki peran dalam pengendalian emosi. Kesimpulannya bahwa strategi keteladanan memberikan efek yang besar dalam memberikan contoh kepada individu dalam mengendalikan emosi, strategi pembiasaan dan pemberian nasihat juga dibutuhkan dalam menghadapi seseorang yang sedang meluapkan emosi marah, mengingat bahwa marah menimbulkan banyak efek negatif seperti berkata kasar, memaki, merusak barang hingga melakukan pembunuhan, selain itu strategi janji dan ancaman juga memiliki peran dalam pengendalian emosi marah karena jika seseorang tersebut menanamkan nilai-nilai agama didalam hatinya serta mengimplementasikannya tentu akan mengingat bahwa seseorang yang dapat menahan marahnya akan mendapatkan keuntungan dan dijanjikan syurga seperti sabarnya suri tauladan yang dicontohkan oleh para nabi.     ABSTRAK Pada penelitian ini, penulis menekankan pembahasan terhadap penafsiran ayat-ayat Uluhiyah dari sudut pandang mufassir Nusantara dengan fokus pada kitab Tafsir Marah Labid. Hal ini dilatarbelakangi dari bagaimana Tafsir Marah Labid karya Syekh Nawawi al-Bantany menafsirkan ayat-ayat Uluhiyah yang mana pembahasannya lebih menekankan pada kajian Tauhid. Adapun rumusan dari permasalahan ini ialah, Pertama, Bagaimana pemikiran Syekh Nawawi al-Bantany tentang ayat-ayat Uluhiyah dalam kitab Tafsir Marah Labid? Kedua, Bagaimana konsep Uluhiyah Syekh Nawawi al-Bantany dalam kitab Tafsir Marah Labid?. Selanjutnya, tujuan dari permasalahan pada penelitian ini ialah untuk memperjelas makna ayat-ayat Uluhiyah dalam Tafsir Marah Labid serta berfokus pada ayat tentang konsep Uluhiyah. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kepustakaan (library Research) data�data yang digunakan yaitu sumber aslinya yakni kitab Tafsir Marah Labid, dengan menggunakan metode tematik (maudhu’i) dengan pendekatan Tafsir Marah Labid. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pandangan Syekh Nawawi al-Bantany mengenai makna Uluhiyah ialah bahwa Tuhan wajib Esa pada zat, sifat dan juga perbuatan-Nya. Dia merupakan Tuhan yang berhak disembah dengan segala bentuk peribadahan, dan tidak ada satu makhluk pun yang dapat disekutukan dengan-Nya. Kata Kunci: Uluhiyyah, Tafsir Marah Labid, Syekh Nawawi al�Bantany, Konsep Uluhiyyah. ABSTRACT In this research, the author emphasizes discussing the interpretation of Uluhiyah verses from the perspective of Indonesian mufassir with a focus on the book Tafsir Marah Labid. This is motivated by how Syekh Nawawi al-Bantany's Tafsir Marah Labid interprets the Uluhiyah verses, the discussion of which places more emphasis on the study of Tauhid. The formulation of this problem is, First, what does Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantany think about the Uluhiyah verses in the book Tafsir Marah Labid? Second, what is the concept of Uluhiyah Syekh Nawawi al-Bantany in the book Tafsir Marah Labid? Furthermore, the aim of the problem in this research is to clarify the meaning of the Uluhiyah verses in Tafsir Marah Labid and focus on the verses about the Uluhiyah concept. This type of research is library research. The data used is the original source, namely the book Tafsir Marah Labid, using the thematic method (maudhu'i) with the Tafsir Marah Labid approach. The results of this research show that Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantany's view regarding the meaning of Uluhiyah is that God must be One in His substance, nature and actions. Aku Tak Marah tells about a world that is both familiar and stranger to the general readers in Indonesia; the poor lives of the urban and suburbs people. With a language that is easy to understand and concise story and funny things in it, Aku Tak Marah presents the events that happen every day, but they are often ignored from observation. Aku Tak Marah Novel written by Djokolelono contains many values of life in it, especially the moral aspects that come from the characters contained in the novel. This thesis aims to reveal the moral aspects that arise from each character in order that the moral message can be conveyed by the author to the readers. The issues discussed in this thesis demonstrate how the structural elements of the novel develop the literary work and what kind of morality aspects contained in the novel. This research used literature study. The method used in this research is qualitative method. There are three phases in this research, first phase is data collection. The technique used is the observation technique. After collecting the data, the next step is the data analysis phase. The data is analyzed descriptively. Then, the presentation of data analysis results are presented in the form of words by giving explanation about Aku Tak Marah. The results of this research can be seen as follows: The main characters in Aku Tak Marah are Agit, Candra, and Vici. The characterization in the Aku Tak Marah uses analytical techniques. The plot in Aku Tak Marah uses a chronological straight. The most dominant place setting in Aku Tak Marah is Encing’s House. The time setting in the novel Aku Tak Marah is not explained specifically, such as the day, date, month, or year used; the time mentioned in the novel is morning, evening, and night that all happen in rainy season. The social setting contained in the novel is a comparison of social life among the citizens of big cities (Jakarta) and the suburban residents (Bekasi). Moreover, the results of the analysis of a moral issue in Aku Tak Marah reveal the moral aspects: love, help, courage, admitting mistakes and forgiving, loyalty, caring, and responsibility.     Pengembangan Media CD Interaktif Untuk Pembelajaran Bahasa Mandarin di SD Taman Harapan Malang

    ABSTRAK   Penelitan ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengembangkan media CD interaktif dalam pembelajaran bahasa Mandarin di SD Taman Harapan Malang. Media CD interaktif berisi permainan dengan tiga kategori yang berbeda. Masing-masing kategori memuat 25 kosakata. Kosakata secara keseluruhan dalam media ini berjumlah 75. Penelitian ini menggunakan modifikasi model pengembangan berbasis komputer dari Alessi dan Trollip dengan tiga tahapan dan tujuh langkah pengembangan dari Sugiyono. Tahapan tersebut adalah planning (perencanaan), design (desain), dandevelopment (pengembangan). Integrasi ketujuh langkah pengembangan dari Sugiyono dalam tiga tahapan Alessi dan Trollip meliputi potensi dan masalah, pengumpulan data, desain produk, validasi desain, revisi desain, uji coba produk, serta produksi terbatas. Validasi terhadap isi media ini dilakukan oleh dua orang ahli, yaitu ahli media dan ahli materi. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan instrumen lembar angket dan lembar observasi. Selanjutnya, data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Dari keseluruhan proses validasi dan uji coba yang telah dilakukan, media ini telah dinyatakan valid dan layak untuk dapat digunakan sebagai media penunjang dalam pembelajaran bahasa Mandarin di sekolah dasar.     The aim of the present study was to describe the development of the main character in Memang Jodoh, a novel by Marah Roesli and its learning design for senior high school students. The method used was qualitative descriptive method. Data analysis technique in this research was text analysis.The results of research shows that the main character underwent a change from a trait of a sorrow person turned into a joyful one. In order to depict themain character, the author made used of both available techniquesthe direct and indirect method of characterization. The overall used of both methods provide a complete picture of Hamli's character. Based on the above findings, the researcher has successfully designed a learning that targeting the purpose of learning so that the students are able to understand the character as one of the elements of story builders. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan perkembangan tokoh pada novel Memang Jodoh karya Marah Roesli dan rancangan pembelajarannya di SMA. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis teks. Hasil penelitian menunjukan perkembangan watak tokoh utama yang mengalami perubahan dari watak penyedih menjadi periang. Saat menentukan watak tokoh utama, peneliti menggunakan dua teknik karakterisasi yakni, teknik langsung dan tidak langsung. Keduanya digunakan untuk memberikan gambaran mengenai watak Hamli. Berdasarkan pendapat di atas, peneliti telah membuat rancangan pembelajaran untuk tujuan pembelajaran pada siswa, agar siswa dapat mengetahui watak sebagai salah satu unsur pembangun sebuah cerita.Kata kunci: perkembangan tokoh, novel, bahan ajar

    Snail mediates cell invasion through uPa-uPar and mark signaling in human prostate cancer cells, 2014

    Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process by which cancer cells acquire mesenchymal properties, such as induction of vimentin, while epithelial-associated genes like E-cadherin are lost. This enables the cells to be more metastatic. Factors that can induce EMT include growth factors like transforming growth factor -P (TGF-P) and epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transcription factors like Snail. Snail-induced EMT promotes migration and invasion and we hypothesized that this may be mediated by urokinase (uPA) and its receptor (uPAR) activities. LNCaP, 22Rvl and ARCaP human prostate cancer (CaP) cells stably transfected with constitutively active Snail displayed increased cell invasion as compared to the empty vector control (Neo). Superarray analysis revealed an up-regulation in uPA and uPAR RNA expression in Snailtransfected ARCaP cells as compared to Neo control. Next, the protein expression levels of Snail, uPA, and uPAR were measured by western blot analysis in various prostate cancer cell lines which showed that overexpression of Snail increased uPA and uPAR protein levels. The activity of uPA in conditioned media was measured using an ELISA assay which revealed that uPA activity was elevated in LNCaP, 22Rvl and ARCaP cells overexpressing Snail. Additionally, transient silencing of uPAR in ARCaP cells overexpressing Snail using siRNA resulted in abrogation of Snail-mediated invasion. Snail overexpression was associated with increased ERK activity and antagonism of this activity with MAPK inhibitor, UO126, inhibited cell invasion and decreased uPA activity. Therefore, Snail-mediated cell invasion in human prostate cancer cells may occur via the regulation of uPA/ uPAR and the MAPK signaling pathways

    The coastal environment as a laboratory: Architecture and embodied experiences

    The long-stretched shadow of my body touches the footprints in the sand in front of me. It is a cold winter afternoon and the sun is already setting. I hear the rhythm of water pulling back and passing under another wave of water. The beach is full of people many of whom presumably visit this place for the same reason as I: “uitwaaien”. While walking in the wind, I empty my mind of thoughts which have been floating around in my head that day. I find comfort in being together with the wind, the sand, the sea. “Uitwaaien” is a Dutch word that is not directly translatable to another language. It involves an activity, yet also a feeling, an experience, a change in mood. What intrigues me as an architect is that this shows that an environment has such strong influence on a person’s well-being. Architects are constructors of environments and therefore I believe that by researching and using the coastal environment as a laboratory, architects can learn to better understand how to design an environment that results in positively affecting its users. To explore the topic, the coastal environment around the harbour of Scheveningen becomes the laboratory. Around Scheveningen harbour, few buildings are left which remind me of the fishing industry which used to be the occupation for most of Scheveningen’s inhabitants. Fish is still one of the most important industries around the harbour, yet the labour has moved inside large box-like warehouses and factory-like ships. Now that the fishing industry is taking less space in the harbour, new offices, apartment blocks and warehouses are starting to appear. These new developments are a reflection of what is happening on a national level and global level. In the case of The Netherlands, the political and economic structures are creating a commercial environment in which housing developers start new building developments at a fast pace and with low budgets. The lack of action by the state in developing houses and the large housing shortage in most cities adds to this problem (Hulsman, 2021; Hulsman & de Voogt, 2020; Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties, 2020). Designs, therefore, are often reduced to the minimum standard of living as set by the building codes. The result is distanced and generalised architecture without thoughts on how these environments could positively affect the user’s well-being (Hannema, 2019) (Pallasmaa, 2012, p. 34,37). In words of Juhani Pallasmaa: “homogenisation of space weakens the experience of being, and wipes away the sense of place” (Pallasmaa, 2012, p. 50). So, the new buildings in the harbour stand in a strong contrast to the spatial characteristics of the coastal environment which provide many positive effects. How can architects make sure that also the buildings have a positive influence on people’s well-being? How can buildings, instead of weakening, enhance the characteristics of the area?     Analisis Pengkondisian Fitur log-f0 CWT Emosi Netral ke Marah dan Sedih Menggunakan Metode Convolutional Autoencoder dan Seq2Seq

    Pada tesis ini, penulis merancang arsitektur deep learning spesifik yang digunakan untuk mengkondisikan intonasi marah dan sedih dari emosi netral.Untuk melatih arsitektur,penulis menggunakan dataset Emotional Speech Database yang menyediakan data mentah berupa rekaman suara berlabel yang dibutuhkan penulis secara spesifik. Dengan data yang tersedia, penulis kemudian melakukan ekstraksi fitur log-f0 Continous Wavelet Transform (CWT) sebagai representasi intonasi. Dengan menggunakan fitur yang berhasil diekstraksi kemudian penulis dapat memandang fitur sebagai data berbasis urutan maupun data gambar bila dilakukan modifikasi. Berdasarkan natur data ini, penulis kemudian mengusulkan arsitektur Seq2Seq dan Convolutional Autoencoder untuk dilatih. Selain itu, penulis juga melatih alat ukur berupa Speech Emotion Recognition untuk melihat performa pengkondisian emosi. Semua arsitektur yang dilatih ini kemudian diuji pada tiga dataset, yaitu: ESD, RAVDESS, dan CREMA-D untuk menilai performa dan kemampuan arsitektur dalam melakukan generalisasi. Hasil pengujian yang dilakukan penulis menunjukkan bahwa secara performa dan generalisasi arsitektur Seq2Seq lebih unggul dari Convolutional Encoder. ================================================================================================================================= In this thesis, the author designs a specific deep learning architecture to condition angry and sad intonations from neutral emotions. To train the architecture, the author uses the Emotional Speech Database, which provides raw data in the form of labeled voice recordings that are specifically required by the author. Using the available data, the author then performs feature extraction of log-f0 using Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) as an intonation representation. The extracted features are then viewed as either sequence-based data or image-based data if modifications are applied. Based on the nature of this data, the author proposes Seq2Seq and Convolutional Autoencoder architectures for training. Additionally, the author develops a Speech Emotion Recognition tool to measure the performance of emotion conditioning. All trained architectures are then tested on three datasets: ESD,RAVDESS, and CREMA-D, to evaluate the performance and generalization capability of the architectures. The test results demonstrate that, in terms of performance and generalization, the Seq2Seq architecture outperforms the Convolutional Autoencoder
