Comparative Literature in Chinese and an Interview with Yue

    No full text
In their article Comparative Literature in Chinese and an Interview with Daiyun Yue Hui Zhang and Daiyun Yue present a review of the discipline of comparative literature based on an interview with Yue (2010). Because Yue\u27s work with comparative literature is intertwined with her personal journey, the interview sheds light on other Chinese scholars and their work who would not be known audiences outside China. The interview also touches on the academic and political reasons why the joint dualisms of ancient/modern and Chinese/foreign continue to be major structuring principles of the discipline in China, as well as how the development of the discipline in China was influenced by engagements with Anglophone U.S. and Canadian scholars and institutions

Migrant workers, collaborative research and spatial pressures : an interview with Meng Yue

    No full text
In July last year I had the opportunity to interview Meng Yue, literary scholar and author of Shanghai and the Edges of Empire (2006). Meng Yue has been collaborating with Toronto-based architect and artist Adrian Blackwell for a number of years, with their students from literature and architecture undertaking highly interesting research on the peripheral zones of Beijing. Questions of peri-urban food production, land use, resource distribution and the multiplication of labour skills have framed these investigations. The interview below is extracted from a considerably longer discussion we had in Beijing during the late summer of 2007, half of which was lost to the faulty battery of an ipod (the rest remains to be transcribed from video…)

    No full text
Studie poodhalila tendenci davu nevystupovat z komfortní zóny a účinnost tezí Randalla Collinse v souvislosti s emočním nastavením kolektivu, účastnícím se slavnostních ceremonií.This bachelor thesis focuses on the reflection of the relationship between the social capital of the artist and the institution that mediates this capital. It focuses on the specific case of Fu Yue, a documentary director, which used her acceptance speech in occasion of receiving a film award for a political gesture, which considered as controversial in her field. By analysis of written documents, media content and face-to-face interviews with Fu Yue work observes the principles of interactive rituals within the award-winning platforms. The theoretical basis of this work is delivered via theses of Pierre Bourdieu, Émile Durkheim and Randall Collins. Study shows tendency of a crowd not to step out of a comfort zone and the effectiveness of Randall Collins theses in connection with the emotional set-up of the collective participating in the festive ceremonies

Spray characterization for engine combustion network Spray G injector using high-fidelity simulation with detailed injector geometry

    No full text
This article presents a computational fluid dynamics study of the engine combustion network Spray G, focusing on the transient characteristics of the spray during the start of injection and the impacts of nozzle geometry details derived from the manufacturing process. The large-eddy-simulation method, coupled with the volume-of-fluid method, was used to model the high-speed turbulent two-phase flow. A moving-needle boundary condition was applied to capture the internal flow boundary condition accurately. The injector geometry was measured with micron-level resolution using X-ray tomographic imaging at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, providing detailed machining tolerance and defects from manufacturing and a realistic rough surface. For comparison, a nominal geometry and a modified geometry incorporating measured large-scale geometric features but no surface details were also used in the simulations. Spray characteristics such as mass flow rate, injection velocity, and Sauter mean diameter were analyzed. Significantly distinct spray characteristics in terms of injection velocity, spray morphology, and primary breakup mechanism were predicted using different nozzle geometries, which is mainly attributable to the realistic surface finish and manufacturing defects. The measured high-resolution geometry predicts a lower injection velocity, a wider-spreading spray, and an overall slower breakup rate with evident injector tip wetting compared to the ideally smooth nozzle boundary. This result implies that the manufacturing details of the injector, which are usually ignored in fuel injection studies, have a significant impact on the spray development process and should be taken into account for design optimization

    Pedagogical Questions in Parent-Child Conversations

    No full text
Questioning is a core component of formal pedagogy. Parents commonly question children, but do they use questions to teach? This article defines "pedagogical questions" as questions for which the questioner already knows the answer and intended to help the questionee learn. Transcripts of parent-child conversations were collected from the CHILDES database to examine the frequency and distribution of pedagogical questions. Analysis of 2,166 questions from 166 mother-child dyads and 64 father-child dyads (child's age between 2 and 6 years) showed that pedagogical questions are commonplace during day‐to‐day parent-child conversations and vary based on child's age, family environment, and historical era. The results serve as a first step toward understanding the role of parent-child questions in facilitating children's learning.Preprint provided, so should not violate copyright, embargoPeer reviewe

Studying high-z galaxies with [C II] intensity mapping

    No full text
We investigate the [C II] line intensity mapping (IM) signal from galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) to assess its detectability, the possibility to constrain the LC II-SFR relation, and to recover the [C II] luminosity function (LF) from future experiments. By empirically assuming that log LC II = log A + γ SFR ± σL, we derive the [C II] LF from the observed UV LF, and the [C II] IM power spectrum. We study the shot noise and the full power spectrum separately. Although, in general, the shot-noise component has a much higher signal-to-noise ratio than the clustering one, it cannot be used to put independent constraints on log A and γ . Full power spectrum measurements are crucial to break such degeneracy and reconstruct the [C II] LF. In our fiducial survey S1 (inspired by CCAT-p/1000 h) at z ∼ 6, the shot-noise (clustering) signal is detectable for two (one) of the five considered LC II-SFR relations. The shot noise is generally dominated by galaxies with LC II > 108-109 L☉ (MUV ∼ −20 to −22), already at reach of ALMA pointed observations. However, given the small field of view of such telescope, an IM experiment would provide unique information on the bright end of the LF. The detection depth of an IM experiment crucially depends on the (poorly constrained) LC II-SFR relation in the EoR. If the LC II-SFR relation varies in a wide log A-γ range, but still consistent with ALMA [C II] LF upper limits, even the signal from galaxies with LC II as faint as ∼107 L☉ could be detectable. Finally, we consider the contamination by continuum foregrounds (cosmic infrared background, dust, cosmic microwave background) and CO interloping lines, and derive the requirements on the residual contamination level to reliably extract the [C II] signal

The Language Choices in the Personal Social Domain of the Kuala Lumpur Yue Community: Cases Analysis and Comparison of Three Female Yue Community Members

    No full text
While Yue is the predominant language in certain regions of Malaysia, previous sociolinguistics studies have mostly focused on the usage of other Sinitic languages in the local context. The discussion of the situation of Yue in certain regions is relatively limited. The author conducted a survey with three Chinese female members of the Kuala Lumpur Yue Community from August 2023 to May 2024 to investigate their language choices. This paper summarizes the findings of the survey, describing and comparing the interviewees’ language choices in the family and friend occasions, which are parts of the personal social domain. It then contrasts these findings with existing large-scale language surveys conducted in Malaysia, aiming to enhance the sociolinguistic understanding of the Kuala Lumpur Yue Community
