Australia's Black Summer wildfires
In this dataset we provide various metrics for the Black Summer wildfires of Australia (September 2019 - mid February 2020), whose area was larger than 100 sq.km. To this end we treated each wildfire as a wildfire event, and extracted various metrics which are either based on the polygon of the extent of the wildfire, or on the approximate ignition point of that wildfire. Our aim was to understand the climatic, vegetation and anthropogenic variables which might explain the wildfires - their spatial and temporal extent, the burn severity etc. The data was collected from a wide range of (mostly) public freely available datasets, full references provided in our publication mentioned below.
This dataset includes the burn date of all Black Summer wildfires of Australia (September 2019 - mid February 2020) based on MODIS and VIIRS, polygons of the largest (> 100 sq.km.) fires (n = 391), and their approximate ignition points. In addition the excel file contains 10 response variables of the fires, and a range of climatic, vegetation and anthropogenic explanatory variables we used to study these fires
Stages for the More Sustainable Farm
Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones. Analyses of the results allow us to confirm the greatest relative sustainability of the planned farm, for the diverse traced scenarios.Decision taking, planning, sustainability, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management,
Parole d'artiste : Marta Cuscunà
International audienceModeration of the interview with Marta Cuscunà, an Italian performer, director, puppeteer and author. In 2009, she was awarded the Premio Scenario per Ustica for E bello vivere liberi!, first show of a trilogy on female resistance, followed by La semplicità ingannata (2012) and Sorry, boys (2015). These three texts are published in Resistenze femminili (Udine: Forum, 2019). In 2018 she created Il canto della caduta. Earthbound (2021) is her last devised show, which brings in the themes of ecofeminism, taking cues from the theories of Donna Haraway and Bruno Latour. In 2021 she became associate artist at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. In 2023, she is guest of honor at the 11th Biennale internationale des arts de la marionette in Paris. She was awarded the prizes Rete Critica (2017), Premio della Critica – ANCT (2018) and Premio Hystrio - Altre Muse (2019).Animation de la discussion avec Marta Cuscunà, performeuse, metteuse en scène, marionnettiste et autrice italienne. Protocol for the validation of the Sentinel-2 FMC data product
Satellites provide essential data for bushfire management to government, industry, and civil sectors. These data must be consistent, high-quality, reliable, and repeatable to inform fire management decisions and operations. The ANU team has developed a pre-operational near-real-time data service - the Australian Flammability Monitoring System (AFMS, Yebra et al., 2018). The AFMS currently relies on MODIS (500 m) data and can be accessed as a pre-operational service through the ANU (http://anuwald.science/afms). In response to industry and end-user needs, the algorithms behind the AFMS have been modified to work on Sentinel-2 data, however this new product requires spatial and temporal validation so that end users have confidence in the product. The validation of the Sentinel-2 Fuel Moisture Content (FMC) data product will increase the likelihood of rapid adoption by fire management agencies at both the Local and State Government levels. Satellite derived products can be validated directly using an independent data source that is representative of the target values or indirectly through product inter-comparison and/or by collecting measurements across various scales and upscaling. This protocol details the procedure for routine collection of Live Fuel Moisture Content (LFMC) for the validation of the ANU’s Sentinel-2 FMC data product. For the successful operationalization of this protocol, we acknowledge that working in areas with dense canopies or heavy understory vegetation such as mallee-heathlands and pine plantations, the collection of samples using star or other transects may be extremely time consuming or impractical (Muir et al., 2011). With this in mind, this protocol has developed to better suit the routine operations of personnel from local government areas (LGAs), emergency services, and other stakeholders whose time and resources may be limited
Simulation Reflectance Models in ecology: potentialities and problems
próximos al 50%).Simulation approaches based on Radiative Transfer Models (RTM) have been widely used in the last few years to estimate biophysical
parameters from remotely sensed data, thanks to their greater generalization power. However, the operational use of RTM is constrained by
the difficulty of providing correct parameterization of the input variables.
This paper reviews the main problems of using RTM to accurately estimate biophysical variables from satellite imagery, highlighting the need
for considering ecophysiological relationships between the input variables.
A case study, focused on the estimation of shrublands water content from MODIS imagery is presented. The selected RTM were PROSPECT
and SAILH. As a result of this exercise, it is shown that the accuracy in the estimations is greatly improved by considering the co-variation
between the inputs (average errors about 30% against errors around 50% when using a random variation of input parameters).Este trabajo ha sido financiado por el Programa Nacional de I+D en Medio Ambiente y Clima, del Ministerio de Educación y
