    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

A self-conscious Kurt Vonnegut: an analysis of Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five and Breakfast of Champions

    No full text
The works of Kurt Vonnegut stand as seminal in the American literary canon. Looking at three of his most influential novels, namely Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five and Breakfast of Champions, this study aims to better understand the mechanisms which inform his fiction. Working chronologically through the novels, the study examines historical context, narrative technique, theoretical underpinnings and the social critique of each novel. Guided by an idea of the postmodern novel the study examines how these elements interact, concluding that by way of what may be considered "simple" yet self-conscious metafiction and prose as well as variations in narrative technique, Vonnegut is able to more accurately convey his opinions on the American situation as well as demonstrate his stance on the role of fiction and the writer in contemporary society. The study also considers closely the role of the reader and the author/reader/text relationship

Abstract This study aims to improve the science learning outcomes of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 01 Muara Bungo using guided discovery learning methods. This type of research is classroom action research. The subjects of this study were students of class VII.1 State Junior High School 01 Muara Bungo, totaling 28 students, consisting of 13 male students and 15 female students. Researchers used an action research model from Kemmis and Taggart. This research was conducted in two cycles of action. In the first cycle, it was conducted in one meeting, while in the second cycle there were two meetings. In each cycle there are planning, implementation, observation and reflection activities. The instruments used were observation sheets and tests. Before being used in the study, the test was empirically validated and with expert judgment. The reliability of the test was calculated using Alpha Cronbach. Observation data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively while test results were analyzed descriptively quantitative percentage. The results of the first cycle research showed that the percentage of students whose grades were above the KKM had only reached 71.43%, so they still could not reach the criteria for research success. In the second cycle, the steps for applying discovery learning methods to increase student success were carried out by providing motivation, dividing the number of smaller group members and heterogeneous members of the group, and giving the opportunity to make group presentations on the results of their practicum in front of the class. The percentage of student scores above the KKM in cycle II increased to 89.29%. Based on the research results, it can be seen that the guided survey method can improve science learning outcomes. Riska Yanti, Perilaku Hidup Bersih dan Sehat (PHBS) Ibu Rumah Tangga dari Keluarga Nelayan (Studi Deskriptif di Kelurahan Kalibaru, Kecamatan Cilincing, Jakarta Utara). Skripsi. Jakarta: Program Studi Pendidikan IPS, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, 2019. ABSTRACT Riska Yanti, Clean and Healthy Life Behavior of Fishermen Communities (Descriptive Study of Housewives of Fishermen in Kalibaru Village, Cilincing District, North Jakarta). Essay. Veneer recovery and properties of plywood made from coconut trunk (cocos nucifera) / Yanti Abdul Kadir

    No full text
A study was undertaken to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of plywood made from coconut veneers bonded with urea formaldehyde resin. Five coconut trunks were obtained from a coconut plantation in Bagan Datoh, Hutan Melintang, Perak Trunks were cut into 165 em billets of different portions, bottom, middle and top from which veneers were obtained. The specific objectives of the study were, firstly, to evaluate veneer recovery percentage from peeling process, secondly, to evaluate physical properties of plywood made of coconut trunk. The portions were peeled to get the inner and the outer veneers. The study showed that the veneer recovery rate of the coconut trunks decreased from the bottom to the top portion of the stem. However, the difference of the recovery rate between each portion was not significant. The mean values of the green veneer recovery for the bottom , the middle, and the top were 53.71%, 48.41% and 47.00% respectively. The veneer recovery rate was also evaluated through different diameters of coconut trunks. The diameter classes chosen for the study were 23.1cm-25cm (class 1), 25.1cm-28cm (class 2), and 28.1cm-33cm (class 3). Veneer recover rate showed insignificant differences in height level and diameter classes. There was insignificant different in Me % even though inner part of trunks possessed higher Me % compared to the outer part. By comparing the Me % between bottom, middle and top parts, it seemed that higher Me % values were recorded from the top part compared to the middle and bottom parts. As for density study of the veneers, it could be seen that inner veneers had lower density from that of the outer veneers. The outer part showed higher density due to the concentration of vascular bundles present in the region. The bottom part of the trunk exhibited higher density value compared to the middle and top parts.Pressing pressure and time were also evaluated. The study revealed that the best pressing pressure and time to manufacture coconut-based plywoods were 500psi and 10 minutes respectively. The evaluation was made based on the physical and mechanical properties of the plywoods made at three different pressing pressure and time. The pressing pressure and time were used to fabricate more coconut-based plywoods for further physical and mechanical testing. This time, only density test was included for physical testing. Three types of mechanical testing were conducted on the plywoodc made from coconut i.e modulus of rupture (MOR) (BS EN 310:1993), modulus of elasticity (MOE) (BS EN 310: 1993), screw withdrawal (SW) CBS EN 699: Part 1:1989) and shear strength (88) (BS EN 314-1:1993). The physical and mechanical examinations showed that the plywoods made of the determined pressing pressure and time was suitable to produce plywoods which has strength that surpassed the standard requirement values of each testing

    Five Scholarly Open Access Publishers

    No full text
This review critically examines five international scholarly publishers that publish academic journals using the gold (author pays) Open Access model. The author-pays model is changing scholarly publishing because authors, rather than libraries or other subscribers, become the publishers' customers, an arrangement that creates a built in conflict of interest. The more articles a publisher accepts, the more revenue it earns. New gold Open Access publishers are appearing almost weekly, and many are engaged in unethical practices. The review covers four predatory publishers, Academy Publish, BioInfo, ScienceDomain International, and Scientific Research Publishing, and one legitimate publisher, AOSIS Open Journals
