Photography and Invisibility: Indexicality and Performativity Asia-Pacific War Memory in Tsukada Mamoru's <i>Identical Twins</i> Series (2003) and Suzuki Norio's Photos of Onoda Hiroo (1974)

This manuscript engages with two central ideas: the first concerns issues related to the problem of truth value in photography, vis-à-vis issues of fictionality and the powers of the false. This discussion is set forth through the analysis of two photographic series—Tsukada Mamoru's Identical Twins (2003), a series of staged photographs of two young men dressed alternately in Japan's imperial military uniform and modern casual dress, posing in a jungle setting, coinciding with the public debates on Japan's possible involvement in the Iraq war in 2003. The author utilizes the ideas and questions raised through this series to understand the powers and position of the second series, Suzuki Norio's 1974 photographs of Onoda Hiroo, the Japanese straggler who stayed for three decades in the jungles of Lubang Island—photographs that were directly responsible for Onoda's repatriation to Japan. The discussion in the text also illuminates a second idea—how complex is Japan's position toward the trauma of defeat and the specters of war, reflecting the complicated emotions experienced toward war memory and its representation in photographs, films, art, and other visual forms. The analysis of the two series delves into issues of photography theory, on questions of indexicality and performativity, and the relations between photographic images in specific cultural climate. The author analyzes how these images may indicate the political fluctuations between the Asia-Pacific War, the 1970s, and 2003, looking at such issues as indexicality and performativity, ghostly presences and staged scenes, truth and fiction, using photography as an immediate visual reference. Through the text, political, social, and cultural questions concerning wartime Japan are intertwined with an analysis of the visual methods, creating a complex view of visual representation and its means and methods.</jats:p

The evolution of IT has put the development of criticai business applications directly in the hands of users. This autonomy can, however, lead to the waste of resources and many organizational problems. The author conducted an exploratory survey with users in the banking sector, in order to identify environmental factors affecting the development of applications by end users, for whom IT is a vital resource. Based on the literature, the author developed a reference model that considers factors related to the organizational environment, operations, users and applications development. The model allowed the characterization of users, the development process and the Identification of the factors process, technology, support, competence and user, and the influence of these factors on the development of applications by users. The analysis was based on single and multivariate descriptive statistical techniques. As a result of the evaluation of the factors, the thesis makes suggestions to managers in functional areas and informatics, in order to lead to a safer and more effective use of IT by nonspecialized users

Though the T'ang officials were, as a rule, paid out of the land tax income, this system began to fail because of the shortage of revenue. Consequently, a new source of revenue caIled Kungchieh pengch'ien (公廨本錢) was set up to patch up defficiency in the pay roIl by expending the interest therefrom, and later the new tax which was thought as a temporary measure came to assume a more important feature in the taxation sytem. Choch'ien-hu is a name given to the household which was given the privilege of borrowing the Government funds and owed the obligation to pay interest. In the beginning it was exempted from corvee; hence many people looked for being designated as choch'ienhu with consequent evil practices. Thereupon, the the choch'ienhu was dearived of its privilege, and most of the choch'ienhu became impoverished, because they were obliged to pay interest as high as 30 to 50 per cent. The author concludes that the choch'ienhu's corvee played a considerable part in the decline of the landed farmers' class and the development of large scale landownership

The purpose of this dissertation is the consumers preference structure (CPS). The general objective is to study the methods of mensurement of CPS (MMCPS) and its main purpose is to measure that structure using the statistical technique Conjoint Analysis (CA). The CA provides a realistic way to measure the impact of the attribute of a product on the consumers preference. This statistical technique is being used more and more in marketing problems. Some softwares have emerged and increased the use of this technique. This dissertation discusses a real application of this technique on the problem of definition of a linen tissue for a specialist group. The emphasis is on the design of a fractional factorial experiment for estimation of a individual model in wich the response variable is rank and the attributes are qualitative. Linear models of a cell of reference and deviations were constructed for the experimental analysis. Used one a non satureded linear model. Some of the main softwares were analysed: SPSS, SAS, ACA, CBC and CVA. The author defines a software project for optimum fractional factorial experimental design and analysis, according to D-efficiency. MMCPS studies can provide the following contribution to Management: products/services/concepts optimization, CPS quantification, marketing segmentation, choice probability determination on the expected participation of the products/services/concepts market in a particular scenario and the simulation (prediction) of individual and aggregate preferences

Insects visiting Trillium flowers were collected by the author at Piratori, Atsuga, Horoizumi, Shoya, Hiroo, Abashiri and Shari in Hokkaido in 1957 (Fig. 1). 1) These insects consisted of Coleoptera (56.3 percent), Diptera (7.0 percent), Hymenoptera (6.0 percent) and others. The Coleoptera included Nitidulidae (48.3 percent), Oedemeridae and Chrysomelidae (12.1 percent) and others. 2) There seems to be no significant difference between T. kamchaticum and T. tschonoskii, judging by the numbers of insects visiting them. But far fewer insects visit T. apetalon. 3) In the case of T. kamtschaticum, almost all of the insects visit the flower in the first half of the flowering period. The author found no insect after the flowering period

In this study, we investigated all Clostridioides difficile strains isolated from stool samples in Nagasaki University Hospital between January 2012 and December 2014. Toxin genes (tcdA, tcdB and cdtA/cdtB) were analyzed for multiplex PCR in a total of 213 strains. In the toxin gene-positive strain, PCR ribotyping was conducted using capillary gel electrophoresis-based PCR and the Webribo database. Patients’ backgrounds were analyzed by departments, disorders, antimicrobials, and clinical dates. The positive rates of tcdA, tcdB, and cdtA/cdtB genes were 62.9%, 63.4%, and 2.8%, respectively. The most frequent PCR ribotype was 047 (14.1%), followed by 014/0 (11.1%) and 002/0 (8.2%). In univariate analysis, the risk factors for the detection of toxin gene-positive strains in patients were older age (p = 0.0036), over ≥ 65 years old (p = 0.0175), the patients hospitalized at Department of Digestive Surgery (P = 0.0059), higher CRP level (P = 0.0395), and lower albumin level (p = 0.0014). In the multivariate analysis, the risk factor for detection of toxin gene-positive strains was the patients hospitalized at Department of Digestive Surgery (OR; 4.62, 95% CI; 1.18–18.0, p = 0.0274). In this study, the percentage of toxin gene-positive and cdtA/cdtB gene-positive strains was almost the same as that reported in previous studies, but the ribotype was different. In addition, we revealed that the risk factor associated with the detection of toxin gene-positive strains was the patients hospitalized at Department of digestive surgery.長崎大学学位論文 学位記番号:博(医歯薬)甲第1119号 学位授与年月日:平成31年3月6日Author: Yuya Okada, Norihito Kaku, Kosuke Kosai, Naoki Uno, Yoshitomo Morinaga, Hiroo Hasegawa, Katsunori YanagiharaCitation: Journal of Infection and Chemotherapy, 25(4), pp.262-266; 201
