Freud, Lacan and Witz : the dimension of the pleasure and the significant
To Jacques Lacan, the Witz technique is the same as the significant technique. Regarding the Witz, the french author considers that the significant technique has a more essential dimension than the pleasure dimension. However, for Sigmund Freud, the main characteristic of the Witz is the pleasure production. An analysis of the pleasure concept, going through its mechanism in the Witz, besides a study about the relationships between the lacanian significant and the freudian Witz, will enable us to have a broader comprehension about the importance of those two dimensions. The evidence of a kind of ¿silence¿ from Lacan about the ¿economic¿ aspect of the pleasure certainly will help us to clarify his position. We sustain howsoever that, even though we recognize the importance of the significant dimension, the pleasure, according to Freud¿s approach, does not lose its main dimension in relation to the Witz and its relationships with the unconsciousDoutoradoEpistemologiaDoutor em Filosofi

Witz/Blitz. Sparks of light in Romantic art according Walter Benjamin
The concept of Witz, as it appears in fragments by Friedrich Schlegel, published between 1798 and 1800, is connected to the aesthetic understanding and was revisited by Walter Benjamin in The Concept of Art Criticism in German Romanticism. Witz is part of the romantic "philosophical terminology", a moment in a critical reflection on a work of art in which sudden knowledge is given. In the work of art, Witz operates an illumination of different levels: semantically, it appears as a figure of style of suddenness, or as parabasis, the break that self-explains the work. Witz, etymologically, would be a corruption of "wissen" (to know), represented by the metaphor of light. The original term Witz maintains a sound similarity to Blitz (lightning), as the knowledge that emerges into consciousness suddenly, like the lightning, a sudden illumination of the scene. Witz / Bliz are in a conceptual pair, i.e., the sound of the terms allows visual and phonetic exchanges that meet the semantic possibilities, making it a pair of opposites
Bart Collins and Steven Witz work on new telehealth model
Purdue communications professor Bart Collins, seated, and Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering director Steven Witz experiment with new technology that will be used to help design a national telehealth model to treat patients in rural and underserved areas who suffer from chronic illnesses. In this test, Collins and Witz are communicating via computer with Hannah Kim, a doctoral student in education technology, and Scott Schaffer, a Purdue professor of education technology.College of Liberal Arts;Communication
What really matters? The elusive quality of the material in feminist thought
The concept of the 'material' was the focus of much feminist work in the 1970s. It has always been a deeply contested one, even for feminists working within a broadly materialist paradigm of the social. Materialist feminists stretched the concept of the material beyond the narrowly economic in their attempts to develop a social ontology of gender and sexuality. Nonetheless, the quality of the social asserted by an expanded sense of the material - its 'materiality' - remains ambiguous. New terminologies of materiality and materialization have been developed within post-structuralist feminist thought and the literature on embodiment. The quality of 'materiality' is no longer asserted - as in materialist feminisms - but is problematized through an implicit deferral of ontology in these more contemporary usages, forcing us to interrogate the limits of both materialist and post-structuralist forms of constructionism. What really matters is how these newer terminologies of 'materiality' and 'materialization' induce us to develop a fuller social ontology of gender and sexuality; one that weaves together social, cultural, experiential and embodied practices

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Gender, careers and organisations: current developments in banking, nursing and local government
Is the position of women in the workplace changing? In addressing the broad range of issues raised by this question, Gender, Careers and Organisations engages in diverse contemporary debates about economic and organisational restructuring, human agency and strategy, embodiment and sexuality. Drawing on original empirical research into contemporary British banking, nursing and local government, the book both contributes to a reformulation of current debates and to the development of theoretical perspectives on gender, careers and organisations
