Assimilation, antigemination, and contingent optionality: the phonology of monoconsonantal proclitics in Polish

    No full text
Bakovic (2005) analyzes the avoidance of 'sufficiently similar' adjacent consonants as the interaction of independent antigemination and assimilation processes. We present evidence from the phonology of monoconsonantal proclitics in Polish in support of the primary consequence of this analysis, that any conditions on antigemination or assimilation will also be conditions on 'sufficient similarity' avoidance. These conditions concern the segmental contexts in which geminates are disallowed in Polish and the variability of one of the assimilation processes involved. The analysis is further corroborated by the coincidence of two changes in progress: as the rate of variable assimilation has gone down, so has the rate of 'sufficient similarity' avoidance.Pająk, Bożena; Bakovic, Eric; Assimilation, antigemination, and contingent optionality: the phonology of monoconsonantal proclitics in Polish. The article talks about developing a practical model for creating a digital library, which is still quite an experimental activity in Poland. Based on her team’s experiences in creating the KPBC, the author discusses steps to project planning and completion, such as, defining project components, objectives, foundation, team management issues and criteria for team selection. Furthermore, the author deals with planning and supervision of work processes, provides an outline of recommended procedures for digitalization and shows an example of a project budget. Thanks to the exchange of practical knowledge on creating digital library projects, future undertakers of similar ventures can find their mission more manageable

Bożena Pactwa deals with the problem of reconstructing an identity of the Ukrainian minority in Poland. The author refers to the memory of the victims of the action “Wisła”, dramas of people expelled that were deprived of the sense of the ethnic affiliation. Moving from considerations on time and memory from an abstract to a socio‑historical level, the researcher convinces us that a collective memory of the Ukrainian minority in Poland will last among others thanks to the ceremonies commemorating the past cultivated together that combines the witnesses of the past events with the representatives of a young generation. Key words: an ethnic identity, a collective memor

The staff employed in this organizational unit, apart from specific professional qualifications, must have the ability to make quick decisions as well as the skills to utilize highly specialized medical apparatus and equipment. Operating theatre nurses are exposed to various harmful factors, thus strain resulting from this type of work can be both mental and physical. The aim of this paper was to assess the level of knowledge of surgical nurses about harmful factors at their workstations. Material and methods: The study was performed in a group of 625 nurses working in different types of operating rooms of public hospitals in Poland. An original questionnaire survey was used to characterize the harmful factors occurring at the operating room nurse's workstation. Results: The results obtained prove that according to the nurses surveyed, the main problem associated with working in the operating theatre is constant exposure to harmful factors that have a significant impact on workload. Conclusions: There are factors identified by the staff at the operating theatre nurse's workstation that affect the level of strain both physically and mentally. Shaping the right working conditions, affecting the efficiency and safety of employees should be a priority for hospital managers and directors. Keywords: surgical nurse, work environment, risk factors, mental workload, physical workload

Bożena Zawisza       Two Songs of Friendship. Judeo-Christian Philosophy of Friendship and the Worldview of the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation in the 21st century. Transcultural Reflections     The author conducts a contrastive analysis of Judeo-Christian philosophy, represented by two European thinkers Jacques Derrida and Tadeusz Sławek, with the worldview of Nuu-chah-nulth, a Canadian First Nation inhabiting the Western coast of Vancouver. The concept of friendship excluding such concepts as symmetry, equality, or mutuality in favour of opposition and decentralization of a viewpoint, is juxtaposed with the dominating principles of Tsawalk – the Nuu-chah-nulth worldview – which promote such values as the common origin and essence of all living beings, despite the apparent differences of race or skin colour. The analysis of the philosophical stances of Derrida and Sławek, highlighting the importance of independence in each relation, promoting the variety, and even open opposition between friends, leads to the understanding of friendship as a process, in which not only one gets to know one’s own culture but also acknowledges other cultures’ value. Both Derrida and Sławek question traditional Judeo-Christian philosophical propositions, preparing ground for the revision of the existing division between the dominating and dominated. Both of them perceive in the development of friendship the possibility for the establishment of better world order. The Nuu-chah-nulth worldview, based on the assumption that heshook-ish tsawalk – everything is one, is purely the philosophy of friendship which accepts everyone without any exception. It rejects any artificially created divisions, resulting from the lack of knowledge, stereotypes and fear. All the same, Nuu-chah-nulth’s mode of behaviour is conditioned by the existing network of relationships between all living beings.  Bożena Zawisza       Two Songs of Friendship. Green Economy Indicators

The chapter is an attempt to answer the question: how is the actual green economy implementation process underway to be measured? The answers were given firstly by the international organizations OECD, UNEP, Word Bank, Global Green Growth Institute, as well as the consulting company Dual Citizen. Also the author of this chapter proposed the Green Economy Index. There is a growing awareness concerning the need for international unification of the indicators used to measure a green economy. Existing indicators represented slightly different approaches and methodologies, based on their own definitions of the subject to be measured. The topic of green economy indicators is going to grow in importance in upcoming years. This will be connected with locating a green economy at the centre of regional and national development strategies.Wydanie współfinansowane ze środków Miasta Łodzi w ramach zadania “Współpraca z wyższymi uczelniami” – umowa 100/03/201
