Most Internet users are aware of the Wikipedia and many use it every day, but what is "the" Wikipedia? Who writes the articles, are they edited, who payed for it, and how large is it? This paper gives a few glimpses behind the scenes and discusses the history of the project and the people who make the Wikipedia usable as a free and open encyclopaedia

    Teaching by chat

This paper discusses some didactical aspects of chat usage for instructional purposes. Areas covered range from the choice of course type and student group for using chats, to the preparation and moderation of chats, and discussing how to manage both troublemaking students and systems. In February 1998 I was the chair of a committee at my previous university that was authoring a recommendation list about the Internet to the president of the school. One of our recommendations was to eliminate the IRC server (Internet Relay Chat), since it was only causing traffic and was just being used for games. We stated that we could not envision a use for chatting either for research or for instructional purposes. Five years later here I am: teaching 4 of my 5 courses by way of chat. There has been an enormous growth in the use of chat-based instruction, but also quite a lot of problems encountered. Much of the available literature addresses technical problems, or discusses chats from an educational psychology perspective. This paper will address ten of the didactical issues in chat-based instruction, summarizing the experiences that I have made in many years of chat experience (DIPF/Orig.)Diese Arbeit diskutiert einige didaktische Aspekte der Nutzung von Chats für Lehrzwecke.

Academic plagiarism is nothing new, and it most certainly did not begin with the advent of the Internet. How do we find and document plagiarism? And how do we deal with those who have been caught? This book collects material on the various aspects of plagiarism in education. Because of the widespread interest in the many doctoral dissertations in Germany that have been found to be plagiarized, including those from high-ranking politicians and members of the scientific community, special attention is given to the VroniPlag Wiki and the situation in Germany, past and present.Introduction -- Plagiarism and academic misconduct -- Plagiarism in Germany -- Plagiarism detection -- Plagiarism perspective -- Plagiarism policies and procedures in other countries -- Outlook

    Learning Software Engineering via Internet

In recent years, education authorities worldwide, including the German Federal Government, have invested heavily in the development of e-learning and multimedia materials for institutions of higher learning. While for some subject matters the benefits of e-learning seem obvious, there are subjects, often consisting of a number of tenuously connected topics or requiring a balance of learning and training, for which it is a valid question whether appropriate learning materials can be presented via the Internet. Software Engineering belongs to this second group, both for its broad collection of topics and, particularly, for the required emphasis on teamwork and communication training
