Using Semantic Mapping Strategy to Develop the Eleventh Grade Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at SMK plus Indonesia Timur

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the use of semantic mapping develops the students’ vocabulary mastery in terms of meaning, spelling, and usage.
The research employs a quasi-experimental reseach design. The research took place at the Eleventh Grade of SMK plus Indonesia Timur in academic year 2013/2014. The population of the research was 79 students. The sample consisted of 59 students which belonged to two groups; 30 students in experimental group and 29 students in control group, which were taken by using purposive random sampling technique. The instrument of collecting data was vocabulary test. The data were obtained through pretest and posttest for both groups and the result of the test was analyzed by using SPSS 20.0 version.
The result of data analysis showed that using semantic mapping was effective to develop the eleventh grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMK plus Indonesia Timur. The students’ result of posttest for experimental group is higher than the students’ result of posttest for control group. It is proven by the mean score of posttest of experimental group is 7.9 and the mean score of posttest of control group is 7.1. The difference of the mean score is statistically significant. It is based on t-test value at significant level 0.05; the probability value is lower than significant level (0.01≤ 0.05).
The result of hypothesis testing showed that the difference of students’ posttest in experimental and control group was significant (0.01≤ 0.05). It means that the use of semantic mapping strategy can develop the eleventh grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMK plus Indonesia Timur

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan strategi semantik mapping mampu meningkatkan penguasaan kosa kata siswa SMK plus Indonesia Timur.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian quasi-experimental. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMK plus Indonesia timur tahun akademi 2013/2014. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI dengan jumlah 79 siswa, dan jumlah sampel yang diambil untuk penelitian ini adalah 59 siswa yang terbagi menjadi 2 kelompok; yaitu 30 siswa di kelompok experimental dan 29 siswa di kelompok kontrol yang dipilih dengan menggunakan purposive random sampel. Instrumen pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah test kosakata. Data yang diambil yaitu pretest dan posttest dari kedua kelompok dan hasil dari pengujian tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan SPSS versi 20.0.
Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa menggunakan strategi semantik mapping efektif dalam meningkatkan kosakata siswa kelas XI SMK plus Indonesia Timur. Hasil posttest siswa pada kelompok experimental lebih tinggi daripada kelompok kontrol. Ini dibuktikan oleh jumlah rata-rata posttest pada kelompok experimental yaitu 7.9 dan jumlah rata-rata posttest pada kelompok kontrol yaitu 7.1. Perbedaan skor bisa dikatakan signifikan secara statistik. Ini berdasarkan nilai t-test di signifikan level adalah 0.05; dan nilai probability lebih rendah dari signifikan level (0.01≤ 0.05).
Hasil test hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa perbedaan posttest siswa di kelompok experimental and kontrol adalah signifikan (0.01≤ 0.05). Ini berarti bahwa penggunaan strategi semantik mapping mampu meningkatkan kosa kata siswa kelas XI di SMK plus Indonesia Timur
IDENTIFIKASI CERITA ANAK BERBASIS BUDAYA LOKAL UNTUK MEMBUDAYAKAN LITERASI DI SD
Local culture is the identity of an area where in this era its features are increasingly eroded by foreign cultures. It happened because of the ease with which foreign cultures enter and blend in with local cultures which can directly affect the cultural structure of the nation. Likewise with folklore as if forgotten. Folklore is one of the national cultural heritages which is a national honor with a diverse culture that must be introduced to students since elementary school. This study aimed to identify the children's stories based on local culture and implement literacy culture at SD Kartika XX-I Makassar. The approach used in this research was descriptive qualitative with survey method while the data collection techniques used were observation, documentation, interviews and questionnaires. Based on the data obtained, the researchers identified twelve children's story titles which were then carried out by literacy to elementary students of Kartika XX-I Makassar. The application of literacy culture in SD Kartika XX-1 Makassar by 1) distributing story books to students 2) reading about 15-20 minutes, 3) students identifying moral values contained in the story, 4) strengthening the moral values of the story children and the application of local culture in accordance with national values
The Students’ Learning Experienced toward the Implementation of Blended Learning Method
Blended learning is when instructors deliver both online and traditional classroom instruction to their students at the same time. While some students participate digitally, others attend classes in person. This study aimed to find out the students’ experienced about implementation of blended learning in learning English. In order to better understand how blended learning impacted students' reading comprehension. This study used a mixed-method to collect the data, interview participants as well as surveying participants. The samples for this study were the students of English department. The results showed that using blended learning has a significant positive impact on students, where it can be finished online in addition to being in the classroom in person. THE ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ LEARNING STYLE
The aim of this research is to find out the types of learning style which students have. The population in this study was the students of English Department in academic year 2017 which amounted to 24 students. The research was conducted at Muslim University of Maros (UMMA), South Sulawesi. This research was a qualitative descriptive research. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaires and documents. The questionnaires in this research were used to determine what learning styles were dominated by students in the learning process. The results of the learning style analysis of the students showed that there are 12 (50%) students were categorized as visual learners, 8 (33%) students were categorized as auditory learner, and 4 (16%) students were categorized as visual-auditory learners
VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION IN TEACHER TALK IN THE CLASSROOM UNIVERSITAS MUSLIM MAROS
This research aimed to analyze the forms of verbal and nonverbal communication in teacher talk. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The instrument of the study was the FLINT System and Darn classification. The participants of this research were the teacher and students in a speaking class of the English Department. The results show that teacher talk gives a positive impact on students’ performance. During the class interaction, the teacher successfully met the aspects of good teacher talk and applied some forms of FLINT system of verbal communication and some elements of non-verbal communication. For the FLINT system, the teacher applied to ask questions, giving encouragement, giving direction, critiquing students’ behavior, dealing with feelings and, prising. For the form of nonverbal communication, the teacher applied only two forms, those are kinesics which is referred to as gestures, and haptics is referred to as touching
The Interferences Faced by The EFL Students in Listening Comprehension
Listening is one of the important skills which must be possessed by the students. But, unfortunately, some students can not cover it in their learning. They found some difficulties during listening. This research aimed to find out the interferences that are faced by the EFL students. This research was qualitative descriptive research. The data is collected from the questionnaires to get the information on students’ difficulties. The data showed that some factors interrupt the learners in listening and they came from internal and external factors. The existing difficulties mostly come from the material given, the second factor comes from the listener and the last factor is related to the physical setting. It is correct that the interferences in listening comprehension faced by students, not only from the listeners themselves but also from content material and surroundings during the listening process. Hence, the students have to find the appropriate way and practice more to improve their listening ability.

THE EFFECT OF READING TEACHING MATERIAL FOR DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION
This study aims to explain the relationship between student learning styles and student achievement in English Reading Comprehension and to determine how extents the teaching material meets the needs of students with different learning styles. Researchers conducted the One-Group Pretest-Posttest design where only one experimental group was given a pre-test and post-test. Data collection is done in several ways, namely by giving a questionnaire from Barsch Learning style inventory (1980), interviewing and conducting pre and post tests to determine the development of students' abilities before and after the presentation of the material. In addition, classroom observation was conducted to find out the classroom activities and students’ participation toward teaching material given. The data revealed that the average of students’ result in pre-test was 38.92 % while the result of the average of students’ result in post-test was 68.58 %. It may say that the students’ improvement in reading comprehension using the teaching material has a significant improvement. 100% of visual learners have improved the ability in English reading comprehension after being given the material. 100% of auditory learners also have an increase in the ability in English reading comprehension after the provision of teaching materials. Likewise with visual-auditory learners in which 100 percent of respondents experienced an increase. However, only 80 percent of 100 percent kinesthetic learners experience an increase after the provision of teaching materials. There are many factors that influence the students. It can be in the form of internal factors that trigger students' motivation in learning English
EDUKASI GURU SD DALAM PENULISAN BUKU CERITA BERBASIS BUDAYA BUGIS MAKASSAR
Tujuan utama pelaksanaan kegiatan ini adalah untuk memberikan edukasi kepada guru SD dalam penulisan buku cerita berbasis budaya bugis Makassar. Metode pelaksanaan yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan ini yaitu metode ceramah dan tanya jawab, demonstrasi, dan pelatihan atau praktik penulisan atau tutorial. Adapun pelaksanaan kegiatan meliputi pemaparan materi (teori) terkait penulisan buku cerita, pengenalan budaya bugis Makassar, pengenalan cerita berbasis budaya dan praktek penulisan cerita berbasis budaya bugis Makassar, kemudian dilakukan pendampingan praktek penulisan buku cerita berbasis budaya bugis Makassar. Output kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan guru dalam penulisan buku cerita berbasis budaya bugis Makassar Kata kunci : Edukasi, Buku cerita berbasis budaya Bugis Makassa
THE USE OF TPR METHOD FOR DISABLE STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES IN ENGLISH VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT
Teaching English as a foreign language to mentally retarded persons is much more complicated than normal EFL students, and it requires specific techniques and methods. The aims of the research are to find out the profile of disabled students’ learning style and to elaborate on how well Total Physical response meets the needs of disabled students with different learning styles. This research applied pre-experimental design which used to see the result of applying the TPR Method for disable students with different learning styles in vocabulary development and the data were obtained from the questionnaire, interview, and classroom observation. The research result shows that there are 3 types of learning styles in the classroom, namely visual learning, auditory and kinesthetic learning style. The data revealed that the average pre-test results of students before being given teaching material using the TPR method is 5% while the results obtained by students after giving teaching material using the TPR method is 77%. 100% of visual learners have improved the result of the post-test after being given the material. 100% of auditory learners also have an increase in the result of the post-test after the provision of teaching materials using the TPR method. However, only 50 percent of 100 percent kinesthetic learners experience an increase after the provision of teaching materials using the TPR method. There are many factors that can influence the result of the student’s test. Analyzing Students\u27 Engagement in Online Learning Environment
Students\u27 engagement is a supporting factor that has an important position in the online learning process to achieve a better and more effective quality of learning. So, this research aims to determine student engagement in online learning. This research used a qualitative descriptive method, and the sample was taken from the English Department Universitas Muslim Maros and consisted of 41 students. The researcher used questionnaires to analyze the students\u27 engagement as a guideline for analyzing and interpreting data and interviews to support the data. The data from the questionnaire will be analyzed using the Likert Scale. The indicators used to measure student engagement in online learning included emotion, participation, behavior, cognition, and skill factors. The data shows that students generally support online education, which is well-received by students
