A 160x160-pixel Image Sensor for Multispectral Visible, Infrared and Terahertz Detection

    No full text
This paper describes the development and characterization of a 160×160-pixels image sensor for the simultaneous detection of visible, infrared and terahertz spectra. The monolithic imager is realized by means of post-processing of CMOS wafers housing the readout integrated circuit (ROIC). Visible pixels are implemented as conventional photodiodes in the ROIC, which contains also the addressing and processing electronics for the infrared and terahertz bands. Infrared and terahertz detectors are based on micro-bolometers and realized during the post-processing fabrication steps. A standard 0.35μm 2P4M CMOS wafer lot has been fabricated and processed, and single imagers characterized for the three spectral bands. Successful operation has been verified at 50 fps, with more than 100 dB dynamic range in the visible region, a NETD of 60mK in the infrared, and a 63pW NEP for the terahertz, with a total power consumption of 173 mW

On the origin of time-dependent behaviour in a barotropically unstable shear layer

An experimental study on the instability of a detached Stewartson layer, using an annular, rotating tank with flat, rigid upper and lower boundaries, showed an instability to steady vortices at a critical Reynolds number, arranged in a global mode structure along the shear layer. Increasing the Reynolds number resulted in successive transitions to lower modes where time-dependent behaviour was only found for flows with three or less vortices. Previous numerical simulations of a related experiment, using a two-dimensional spectral model of the quasi-geostrophic vorticity equation incorporating Ekman forcing and viscous dissipation, suggested that the boundary conditions at the inner cylinder of the domain could significantly affect the interior flow by the generation and shedding of vorticity at this inner boundary. A comparison of the numerical results with experimental data suggests that the rise of time-dependent behaviour is due to vorticity generation at the inner domain boundary

Innovative monolithic detector for tri-spectral (THz, IR, Vis) imaging

    No full text
Fusion of multispectral images has been explored for many years for security and used in a number of commercial products. CEA-Leti and FBK have developed an innovative sensor technology that gathers monolithically on a unique focal plane arrays, pixels sensitive to radiation in three spectral ranges that are terahertz (THz), infrared (IR) and visible. This technology benefits of many assets for volume market: compactness, full CMOS compatibility on 200mm wafers, advanced functions of the CMOS read-out integrated circuit (ROIC), and operation at room temperature. The ROIC houses visible APS diodes while IR and THz detections are carried out by microbolometers collectively processed above the CMOS substrate. Standard IR bolometric microbridges (160x160 pixels) are surrounding antenna-coupled bolometers (32X32 pixels) built on a resonant cavity customized to THz sensing. This paper presents the different technological challenges achieved in this development and first electrical and sensitivity experimental tests

SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in IBD: more pros than cons

    No full text
International audienceData on the efficacy and safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are now available, but evidence for these vaccines in those who are immunocompromised (including patients with inflammatory bowel diseases) are lacking. As vaccination begins, questions on advantages and disadvantages can be partially addressed using the experience from other vaccines or immune-mediated inflammatory disorders

Cello techniques and performing practices in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries

    No full text
This thesis comprises a study of cello performance practices throughout the nineteenth century and into the early decades of the twentieth. It is organised in terms of the increasing complexity of the concepts which it examines, as they are to be found in printed and manuscript music, instrumental methods and larger treatises, early recordings, concert reviews and pictures. Basic posture is considered along with different ways of holding the bow. The development of the tail-pin shows that even when it was widely used, the older posture was still referred to as a model. Some implications for tone quality and tonal projection are considered in the light of the shape of the arms. Some connections between the cellist's posture and that recommended by etiquette books are explored. The functionality of the left hand and arm, and the development of modem scale fingerings, show that there was a considerable period of overlap between newer and older practices, with modern scale fingerings evolving over a long period of time. Similarly, views on the function of the right wrist in bowing are shown to change gradually, moving towards a more active upper arm movement with less extreme flexibility of the wrist. Two central expressive techniques especially associated with string playing arc considered in the context of the cello, namely vibrato and portamento. These topics are examined in the light of written indications in music, recommendations in cello treatises, and the practices evidenced in early recordings. The sources for this study can be brought into an overall framework of a constant dialogue between `theory', as expressed in verbal instructions to the learner, or general a priori reflections about the cello, and `practice', manifested in performing editions and early recordings, or in individual acts of reception. A wide divergence is noted, both between theory and practice in general, and in terms of different styles of playing observable at any one time. It is suggested that tensions between practice and critical disapproval can be resolved in terms of Lacanian discourse. Several test cases are used in order to compare several different recordings of the same works. The question of the musical character of the cello is discussed in terms of widespread assumptions about its gendered identity. A wide range of sources suggest that this moved from a straightforwardly `masculine' identity expressed through a controlling, elevated eloquence to a less clearly defined one, incorporating the 'feminine', with a greater stress on uninhibited emotional expression. Some performance implications for this change of view are pursued with respect to specific repertoires. Broad conclusions stress the importance of the diversity of performance practices as opposed to unifying generalisations

Electron Coherence in Mesoscopic Kondo Wires

To appear in Advances in Solid State Physics, Vol 43, edited by B. Kramer (Springer Verlag, Berlin 2003)We present measurements of the magnetoresistance of long and narrow quasi one-dimensional gold wires containing magnetic iron impurities. The electron phase coherence time extracted from the weak antilocalisation shows a pronounced plateau in a temperature region of 300 mK - 800 mK, associated with the phase breaking due to the Kondo effect. Below the Kondo temperature, the phase coherence time increases, as expected in the framework of Kondo physics. At much lower temperatures, the phase coherence time saturates again, in contradiction with standard Fermi liquid theory. In the same temperature regime, the resistivity curve displays a characteristic maximum at zero magnetic field, associated with the formation of a spin glass state. We argue that the interactions between the magnetic moments are responsible for the low temperature saturation of the phase coherence time

Quasi-steady vortical structures in vertically vibrating soap lms

    No full text
An analysis of the quasi-steady streaming of the liquid in a vertically vibrated horizontal soap film is reported. The air around the soap film is seen to play a variety of roles: it transmits normal and tangential oscillatory stresses to the film, damps out Marangoni waves, and forces non-oscillatory deflection of the film and tangential motion of the liquid. Non-oscillatory volume forcing originating inside the liquid is also analysed. This forcing dominates the quasi-steady streaming when the excitation frequency is close to the eigenfrequency of a Marangoni mode of the soap film, while both volume forcing in the liquid and surface forcing of the gas on the liquid are important when no Marangoni mode resonates. Different manners by which the combined forcings can induce quasi-steady streaming motion are discussed and some numerical simulations of the quasi-steady liquid flow are presented

Experiments on a barotropic rotating shear layer. Part 1. Instability and steady vortices

    No full text
The barotropic shear layer in a rotating fluid is studied in a laboratory experiment. Through the rotation of circular sections in the base and lid of a circular tank relative to a background rotation of the entire system, a vertical layer of strong horizontal shear develops, the Stewartson layer. Above a critical shear, the shear layer breaks up through barotropic instability, which is an inertial instability The flow then develops a string of vortices along the shear zone. It will be shown that the transition from an axisymmetric flow to regular vortices occurs through a Hopf bifurcation. Subsequent transitions to more complex flows, such as modulated vortices, chaos and highly irregular flow, will be presented briefly, while the main points of this paper are the primary instability, steady vortices and their nonlinear dynamics. Among the issues discussed is the sensitivity of the flow to the direction of the differential shear. The experimental data will be used to test the ability of boundary layer theory and quasi-geostrophic theory to predict the onset of instability and the range of unstable wavenumbers.</p
