Macroeconomic Interdependence with Trade and Multinational Activities

    No full text
This paper examines how differences in the integration strategies followed by firms active in foreign markets affect the way productivity and policy shocks spread their effects worldwide. The analysis incorporates costly trade and local sales by multinational firms in a general-equilibrium open economy macroeconomic model. The mode of foreign market access is found to play a major role in the international business cycle, affecting the dimension of consumption and output spillovers worldwide. We show that despite financial markets being effectively complete, consumption risks may not be fully insured in the world economy as long as multinational firms discriminate prices across markets. Furthermore, cross-country differences in firms' integration strategies can account for extensive asymmetries in the way country-specific and global shocks are transmitted in the world economy. We argue that this may have relevant consequences for the welfare implications of monetary and trade policies. Copyright 2008 The Author. Journal compilation 2008 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Lilia Schwarcz e a persistência do nacionalismo metodológico nas interpretações do Brasil / Lilia Schwarcz and the persistence of methodological nationalism in interpretations of Brazil

    No full text
This review presents a critical analysis of the book Sobre o autoritarismo brasileiro (On Brazilian authoritarianism), by anthropologist and historian Lilia Schwarcz, which seeks to make a multidimensional interpretation of national authoritarianism. By presenting the main arguments in the book, I argue that the author constructs an interpretation that does not break with traditional images of Brazil, but rather reproduces an idealized perspective of the democratic system, following the methodological nationalism, what leads her to emphasize some supposed particularities of the Brazilian case. Thus, Schwarcz’s work contributes to crystallize the subordinate position of Brazil within the geopolitics of knowledge in global modernity

Soleil amer by Lilia Hassaine: From Utopia to Exclusion

In Soleil amer, Lilia Hassaine revisits Algerian immigration in the post-colonial period. This article shows how the author chooses to make her characters evolve over three decades, each of which illustrates a stage in the urban planning during that period. The sixties were the years of utopia with the birth of social housing, the seventies the years of abandonment of social policies, and the eighties those of decadence, condemning these large suburban areas to progressive ghettoization. We understand that Saïd and Naja’s family, dragged down by this same decadence, is also a victim of the consequences of these social policies and of the end of the mirage of integration that the HLM housing estates represented in the sixties. The writer points to the political responsibility for the exclusion of these suburban areas, but also to the Franco-Algerian wound that is still open today.Filologí

On Growth and Income Distribution in a Globalizing World

    Get PDF
The basic idea explaining the relationship between economic growth and income distribution is the “U- shaped hypothesis” postulated by Simon Kuznets. This can be shown in a dual-economy model with technical progress. Initially, inequality is low, but as labour participation in the modern sector increases, higher wages in this sector tend to increase inequality. However, if enough labour is incorporated in the modern sector, wage inequality begins to diminish. Income inequality continues to worsen between the two sectors, if a new modern economy (e.g. IT-based technical change) is introduced and potential GDP shifts to a new trajectory before the turning point is reached. In a globalised word, the substantial unskilled-labour-saving technical progress puts pressure on wages of unskilled workers (in industrialized countries). Also, globalization may be blamed for leaving many nations and millions of people out from reaping the benefits of globalization. This problem can only be overcome by appropriate reforms of the international economic system.Economic Growth, Income Distribution, Globalization
