La prosa documentale di Svetlana Aleksievič: tra reportage e memoir collettivo

    No full text
This essay offers an analysis of the work of Svetlana Alexievich as the most complete expression of documentary prose, defined as a hybrid narrative and combining the genres of the reportage and the collective memoir. This narrative trend attained full development in Soviet literature during the 1970s and is characterized by a transfer from the author to direct witnesses of the narrated events. While Iryna Shylnikova traces the origins of this trend, a diachronic study of documentary prose allows her to reconstruct Svetlana Alexievich’s artistic method. She explains, at the same time, how a recourse to living testimonies on real facts can be transformed into an aesthetic phenomenon. In particular, Shylnikova focuses on Second-hand Time in an attempt to establish the core points of the author’s poetics

Classical Crossover and Its Russian and Ukrainian Interpretations

    No full text
This article aims to explore the phenomenon of “classical crossover,” a contemporary music trend that blends “high” and “low” elements. In addition to analyzing the genre’s main features and cultural preconditions for its emergence, the article will examine its historical origins and development. The second part of the article focuses on examples of classical crossover in Russian and Ukrainian music, with an analysis of several artists who have ventured into this new type of production, including the Terem Quartet, Anna Netrebko, Olga Chubareva, and Arina Domski. By applying historical and cultural methodology, the article suggests that classical crossover has a broad audience in Russia and Ukraine, allowing musicians to introduce elite classical music to the masses. Although some may view the genre as a dilution of classical music’s distinctive qualities in order to cater to popular tastes, it also provides musicians with the opportunity to create original pieces that merge tradition with innovation. Considering all of the above, the author of this article aims to explore the cultural significance and impact of classical crossover in the music industry

Constructing an integrated model of public-sector leadership competencies: an exploration

    No full text
Driven by the forces of globalization, the sweeping developments of recent decades have prompted changes in societal perceptions of leadership. The meaning of the concept itself has changed so dramatically that public leadership does not mean public-sector leadership anymore as the sectoral boundaries have been crossed to include individuals from the private and nonprofit sectors, civic leaders, and community volunteers involved in addressing pressing social, economic, and environmental problems (Luke, 1998). And yet, the chain of recent, universally acknowledged public sector leadership failures indicate that lack of leadership in public organizations is, if not immediately apparent, quite real. Increasingly, leadership quality is being linked to leadership training and development. In particular, an approach to leadership development and selection that is gaining momentum under “the pervasive influence” of New Public Management in the US and a number of other countries (Mau, 2009) is based on a set of identifiable personal characteristics called competencies. This research offers an analysis of competency-based approaches and addresses the need for better articulation of leadership models to ensure a better fit with the public sector (Trottier et al., 2008). The purpose of this theory-building exercise has been to create an integrated model of public-sector leadership competencies that could be used as a template in developing a leadership training program for public sector executives and/or managers. Exploratory in nature and qualitative in terms of methodology, the research offers a phenomenological perspective and provides critical assessment of the competency movement’s place within the processes transforming public service. Grounding the analysis in the existing leadership and public administration literature, I ask the questions: How well does the competency-based approach serve the mission of producing public leaders capable of sustaining high performance in their work communities—departmental units or agencies? And is it capable of capturing and integrating new and emerging competencies as they appear? The synthesis of selected competency models into the integrated model brings the disparate and disjointed language of competency modeling one step closer to a common denominator, thus deepening our understanding of this phenomenon. It also responds to the perceived need to further develop competency-based theory of leadership and contributes, through the advancement of the topic, to the improvement of our civil service and its leadership cadre’s training and development.Ph. The article deals with the problem of interaction between the artist and the society in early poems of Iryna Zhylenko for the first time. Theme dominant is defined as decodering of the mystery of creative work, identification of the problem of genius’ choice in the poems of Iryna Zhylenko «Tsar-ear. Ode to Kateryna Bilokur», «Save the Sun at the sunrise» and «Seige. The poem about escape and returning back». Lyric heroine has an imaginary dialogue with prominent painters Kateryna Bilokur, Anry Matisse and Micelangelo Buonarotti. All of them experience catharsis while coping with doubt. Interaction between the personality and the society in the works mentioned above is considered via perception of the difference of the genius-artist by the society. Having survived the crisis of self-identification and formulates new sense of life: «to serve the mankind and the epochs», becomes a tragic character which impartially rises above earth misery for the sake of eternity, universal values of life. The author is interested in characters’ critic psychological states, but in general the problem of the artist and the society, the sense of creative work in the works we analyze has optimistic lifeaffirming solution. Long inner monologues of famous artists and fragmentary composition promote its artistic incarnation. Iryna Zhylenko grasps the idea of favouritepainers’ outlook and style evolution, the process of identification their goal: to serve people. Poems «Tsar-ear. Ode to Kateryna Bilokur», «Save the Sun at for sunrise » and «Seige. The poem about escape and returning back» confirm the development of author’ poetic skills, incarnate typical for her concepts of home, garden, town, happiness, heart, light. They reflect the evolution of Iryna Zhylenko’s poetics : from quiet self-concentration, meditation, privacy, self-irony to publicistic and civic writing, ontological comprehension of the urgent problems of the second half of the twentieth century

The purpose of the article is to find out the main artistic and sociocultural factors that determined the formation of professional folk dance ensembles in the USSR. The research methodology is based on a combination of historical-cultural, formal-typological, comparative analysis, which made it possible to fully reveal the range of issues associated with the subject of the research. The scientific novelty consists in identifying the main artistic and sociocultural factors that led to the formation of professional folk dance ensembles in the USSR; clarification of the general and the difference in the principles of folklore dances adaptation by Y. Churko and K. Vasylenko. Conclusions. The article concludes that in the classification schemes of the principles of folklore dances adaptation by Y. Churko and K. Vasylenko, the first (minimal adaptation of the primary folklore source) and the third (the author’s work) principles coincide. Y. Churko states that the essential in the second principle is the connection with the folklore mainstay. K. Vasylenko places before arbitrary interpretation, enrichment with tricks, borrowing the styling of classical dance, a departure from folklore is allowed. The article found the cultural factors that determined the formation of professional folk dance ensembles in the USSR: the All-Union Folk Dance Festival in 1936 in Moscow; the success of the trykolinnyi (three-part) hopak in London in 1935; numerous shows and festivals of organised amateur performances and unorganised amateurs. Among the sociocultural ones is the article “The Ballet Falsity” (1936), which introduces the idea of the inorganic demonstration of folk dance on the ballet stage, emphasised the need to create independent forms of stage presentation of this kind of choreographic art; imposition of socialist realist principles, including “nationality”, “large-scale involvement”; replicating the formula of Soviet art “national in form, socialist in content,” which required the introduction of elements of national art in ideologically verified forms

Art of the ХХ century, in particular literature, developed under the influence of modernism. The personification of artistic research and experiments in the literature of this era was the figure of the famous Irish writer J. Joyce. Joyce’s artistic heritage has long been one of the most interesting and attractive phenomena for literary critics in various schools and industries. In modern researches of Ukrainian scientists, Joyce’s works are considered in a broad ideological and aesthetic context of that time, its innovation in the context of the development of literary trends of the last century. The paper is devoted to the study of the features of the translation of the autobiographical novel by the Irish writer James Joyce’s “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” and the reproduction of the writer’s idiostyle by Mariana Prokopovych. The first chapter defines the theoretical foundations for studying the features of translation of autobiographical works; analyzes the problem of determining the genre of the novel about an artist; considers Künstlerroman as a modern literary and linguistic phenomenon. In the research part of the article, the features of translating an autobiographical novel are presented; the novel about an artist “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” in the literary heritage of James Joyce is analyzed; the transformation of James Joyce idiostyle in the translation into Ukrainian of the Künstlerroman novel “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” is taken under consideration: lexical aspect of equivalence: denotative aspect of lexical transformations and connotative aspect of lexical transformations; lexical-grammatical aspect of equivalence; grammatical aspect of equivalence, in particular, transformation at the morphological and syntactic levels. “Portrait of a young artist” is, in our opinion, the key work that combines the world of a novice writer with a deep philosophical view of the world of a mature artist. The author of the article is convinced that the problems of adequacy and equivalence of the original text and translation, without a doubt, deserve further research in modern translation studies, the prospects for further research in the context of our subject are, in our opinion, the ability to analyze functional-communicative, stylistic, connotative phraseological, onomasiological and pragmatic equivalence of translations into Ukrainian of other works by Irish writer J. Joyce and novels by other authors in the genre of the novel about the artist.Статтю присвячено дослiдженню жанрових особливостей роману iрландського письменника Дж.
