Book Review: Outmaneuvered: America’s Tragic Encounter with Warfare from Vietnam to Afghanistan
Author: James A. Warren
Reviewed by: Dr. Marie Louise deRaismes Combes, assistant professor of national security, Department of National Security and Strategy, US Army War College
Outmaneuvered: America’s Tragic Encounter with Warfare from Vietnam to Afghanistan chronologically examines the United States’ relationship with counterinsurgency. The author’s primary focus is the influence of politics on irregular warfare and covers irregular conflicts that occurred prior to and after 9/11. The reviewer saw both positives and negatives to the book and its arguments.

Cuando los combes luchaban (1953) by Leoncio Evita Enoy : process of perversion or discursive subversion?.
It was in 1953 when was published, Cuando los combes luchaban, first novel written by a man of Equatorial Guinea: Leoncio Evita Enoy. Even though actions of the novel took place in the pre-colonial period, at the time of publication, Equatorial Guinea had still been a Spanish colony which had rejected the independence claimed by the independentists. Through what discursive process does Leoncio Evita Enoy manage to conceal in the same work, criticisms as much towards black culture as to the white one? How does ideology, by which our author seems to legitimize action of invaders, and therefore destruction of a people, manifests itself at the level of discursive formation? Finally, its work recognized as assimilationist, all we have to do is to know whether it is perverted or simply subversive. Does it contain features of resistance to colonialist ideology? To achieve our ambition, we propose to use a new tool, that is to say, be based on the production conditions to analyze “amount of text” devoted to the main themes of the work
Galaxy Zoo:bar lengths in local disc galaxies
We present an analysis of bar length measurements of 3150 local galaxies in a volume limited sample of low redshift (z =3), and we find that observers were able to reproduce their own bar lengths to 3% and each others' to better than 20%. We find a "color bimodality" in our disk galaxy population with bar length, i.e., longer bars inhabit redder disk galaxies and the bars themselves are redder, and that the bluest galaxies host the smallest galactic bars (< 5 kpc/h). We also find that bar and disk colors are clearly correlated, and for galaxies with small bars, the disk is, on average, redder than the bar colors, while for longer bars the bar then itself is redder, on average, than the disk. We further find that galaxies with a prominent bulge are more likely to host longer bars than those without bulges. We categorise our galaxy populations by how the bar and/or ring are connected to the spiral arms. We find that galaxies whose bars are directly connected to the spiral arms are preferentially bluer and that these galaxies host typically shorter bars. Within the scatter, we find that stronger bars are found in galaxies which host a ring (and only a ring). The bar length and width measurements used herein are made publicly available for others to use (http://data.galaxyzoo.org)

REGIONAL AND URBAN SCIENCE IN FRANCE: RANKINGS OF AUTHORS AND INSTITUTIONS AND PUBLICATION PATTERNS DURING THE NINETIES
This article analyses the evolution experienced by research in urban and regional science in France between 1991 and 2000, comparing these changes with wider international trends. Nine of the leading international journals of regional and urban studies were used in drawing up rankings of countries, authors and institutions and in exploring publication patterns. We examine the strategy adopted by the French in establishing themselves within the world's top five in regional and urban research and report a number of interesting findings when comparisons are drawn internationally.REGIONAL AND URBAN SCIENCE, BIBLIOMETRICS, RANKINGS
La consommation de séries à l'épreuve d'internet. Entre pratique individuelle et activité collective
National audienceThis article examines the world of TV series fans, which the author calls “seriphiles”. Through websites, forums, blogs and P2P platforms, the Internet provides an ideal vantage point from which to examine the diversity of activi- ties spawned by the love of series. The Internet as well as digital technologies have profoundly reshaped the patterns of consumption of TV series content. In particular, the author seeks to understand how seriphiles share their passion in the context of changing socio-technical conditions. He identifies three forms of sharing: the experience of viewing, online conversations, and exchange and redistribution of content. These three strongly intertwined forms create a ten- sion between individual and collective dimensions of series consumption that is conspicuous in the studied population of seriphiles.L'article se propose d'investir l'univers des fans de séries – désignés par « sériphiles ».
Do the last chapters of The Ring or the Shining Stone show an effort by the author to justify his orthodoxy just after the Constitution Benedictus Deus? Does Gerson’s critique rather have the decretal of 1311 in mind, as Andr. Combes claims? This article takes up the question afresh and shows that it is rather an amalgam of the two bulls, which in no way affects the Brabant master’s conception of mystical union, which is perfectly orthodox and subtly Trinitarian. He by the way criticised the Begards, to whom Gerson and Combes tried to assimilate him, as well as their Eckhartian source. The indistinction of enjoyment in no way reduces the difference of essences, nor that of the divine persons. Each blessed creature thus receives in the union without confusion its true identity inscribed on the calculus, in the eternal face to face
Exponential decay of eigenfunctions of first order systems
Papers from the International Conference on Transport and Spectral Problems in Quantum Mechanics held in honor of Jean-Michel Combes at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, Cergy-Pontoise, September 4--6, 2006The author studies exponential decay of the eigenfunctions of first-order (matrix) differential operators of the form It is shown that under certain assumptions, the eigenfunctions obey estimates of the type The author emphasizes that these estimates are valid everywhere off the essential spectrum , not just below the minimum of
