    We have read with great interest the article "Intermittent fasting scheme and reduction of anthropometric measurements, lipid prole, blood pressure and cardiovascular risk" published by Dr Javier Wong-Gonzáles et al , in number 1, volume 22 of your magazine; where the purpose of the research focuses on the assessment of the efficacy of intermittent fasting as a strategy for the modication of anthropometric parameters and cardiovascular risk variables; We would like to contribute the importance of dening the times of the day in which the periods of food intake and abstinence are framed during intermittent fasting, since the induced metabolic effects are highly dependent on circadian uctuations

    Representaciones sobre el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico en maestros en formación

    Este artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación cuantitativa que indagó por las representaciones sociales acerca del desarrollo del pensamiento crítico de un grupo de maestros en formación (n=41) de una Escuela Normal Superior. Para concretar el objeto de construcción de la representación se tomó como referencia la enseñanza de las ciencias sociales. Los resultados muestran que las representaciones asumen el desarrollo de este tipo de pensamiento como algo que no es innato en los estudiantes y que en esta tarea el profesorado tiene una centralidad importante a través del control del grupo y la información. Las respuestas a los ítems de desarrollo del pensamiento no muestran diferencias estadísticamente significativas por sexo, semestre o haber realizado curso introductorio y permitieron construir la representación social de este grupo cuyo elemento común era ser estudiantes de un programa de formación de maestros

    Relaciones entre la prensa digital y los centros escolares de Educación Obligatoria

    Conocer a través de la percepción del profesorado el papel que desempeña la prensa digital en la Educación Obligatoria es el tema de este estudio. Igualmente, nos interesa averiguar cómo influyen unas variables personales, académicas, institucionales y contextuales sobre estas percepciones. La investigación, en la que han participado 733 docentes de 76 escuelas, es un estudio no experimental de corte descriptivo. Por su parte, los datos se han recopilado mediante un cuestionario de elaboración propia, que consta de 55 ítems con los que se ha llevado a cabo un análisis cuantitativo. Los resultados revelan que los docentes se sienten moderadamente preparados para la aplicación de la prensa digital; siendo el profesorado de Primaria el que peor puntúa sus competencias tecnológicas. En general, han valorado favorablemente la prensa electrónica como un agente educador. Sin embargo, indican que en sus centros se emplea poco como recurso educativo y que no se fomenta su lectura. Respecto a las implicaciones, consideramos que el diagnóstico realizado con esta investigación nos sirve como punto de partida para el diseño y la implantación de programa

    Serpentinite-derived slab fluids control the oxidation state of the subarc mantle

Science Advances, 7(48), (2021): eabj2515, https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abj2515.Recent geochemical evidence confirms the oxidized nature of arc magmas, but the underlying processes that regulate the redox state of the subarc mantle remain yet to be determined. We established a link between deep subduction-related fluids derived from dehydration of serpentinite ± altered oceanic crust (AOC) using B isotopes and B/Nb as fluid proxies, and the oxidized nature of arc magmas as indicated by Cu enrichment during magma evolution and V/Yb. Our results suggest that arc magmas derived from source regions influenced by a greater serpentinite (±AOC) fluid component record higher oxygen fugacity. The incorporation of this component into the subarc mantle is controlled by the subduction system’s thermodynamic conditions and geometry.     Compositional variability in a cold-water scleractinian, Lophelia pertusa : new insights into “vital effects”

The definitive version was published in Geochemistry Geophysics Geosystems 7 (2006): Q12004, doi:10.1029/2006GC001354.We analyzed Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios in the thecal wall of Lophelia pertusa, a cold-water coral, using SIMS ion microprobe techniques. The wall grows by simultaneous upward extension and outward thickening. Compositional variability displays similar trends along the upward and outward growth axes. Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios oscillate systematically and inversely. The sensitivity of Lophelia Sr/Ca ratios to the annual temperature cycle (−0.18 mmol · mol−1/°C) is twice as strong as that exhibited by tropical reef corals, and four times as strong as the temperature dependence of Sr/Ca ratios of abiogenic aragonites precipitated experimentally from seawater. A comparison of the skeletal composition of Lophelia with results from precipitation calculations carried out using experimentally determined partition coefficients suggests that both temperature-dependent element partitioning and seasonal changes in the mass fraction of aragonite precipitated from the calcifying fluid influence the composition of Lophelia skeleton.     Exertion therapy for the mentally subnormal child.

    Bibliography: pages 120-136.The use of physical exercise as a therapeutic technique was explored with special reference to the mentally subnormal child. Advances in intellectual capability and social maturity were discussed in direct relation to .progress in motor skill and physical fitness. The prerequisites for a successful physical exercise programme for increasing intellectual and social functioning were outlined. An investigation was carried out to examine the effects of dynamic physical exertion therapy on the intellectual and social functioning of mentally subnormal children. A static physical exertion therapy condition served as control intervention. Thirty two institutionalised children matched on age, sex and diagnostic classification, participated in the 30-week programme. Heart rate at rest, heart rate at sub minimal workload and maximal oxygen consumption rate estimates served as measures of physical fitness. Changes in intellectual and social functioning were assessed by means of the Vineland Social Maturity Scale, Old South African Individual Scale, and Goodenough Draw-A-Man. Test. Highly significant improvements were recorded for the dynamic physical exertion therapy condition. Changes due to the static physical exertion therapy were less significant. The results supported the hypotheses that intensive, regular cardiovascular endurance exercises bring about marked increases in physical fitness associated with increases in intellectual and social functioning.     The Genome Sequence Of Leishmania (leishmania) Amazonensis: Functional Annotation And Extended Analysis Of Gene Models

    We present the sequencing and annotation of the Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis genome, an etiological agent of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Amazon region of Brazil. L. (L.) amazonensis shares features with Leishmania (L.) mexicana but also exhibits unique characteristics regarding geographical distribution and clinical manifestations of cutaneous lesions (e.g. borderline disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis). Predicted genes were scored for orthologous gene families and conserved domains in comparison with other human pathogenic Leishmania spp. Carboxypeptidase, aminotransferase, and 3′-nucleotidase genes and ATPase, thioredoxin, and chaperone-related domains were represented more abundantly in L. (L.) amazonensis and L. (L.) mexicana species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these two species share groups of amastin surface proteins unique to the genus that could be related to specific features of disease outcomes and host cell interactions. Additionally, we describe a hypothetical hybrid interactome of potentially secreted L. (L.) amazonensis proteins and host proteins under the assumption that parasite factors mimic their mammalian counterparts. The model predicts an interaction between an L. (L.) amazonensis heat-shock protein and mammalian Toll-like receptor 9, which is implicated in important immune responses such as cytokine and nitric oxide production.     This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Our thesis is concerned with the process of course innovation and Development in technical education within the area of the London County Council During the period 1918-39. Although essential, an historical study, the Thesis is intended to be of value in a consideration of future development in Technical education, and in particular in the study of the relationship between Curriculum management and manpower planning. The first part of our thesis describes the institutional structure of the principal sectors of technical education in London and outlines the Type of courses that were available and their general progress during the Interwar years. The second part of our thesis seeks to analyse the background to course innovation and to assess why certain courses were successful and why others were comparative failures. Since the topic is potentially so vast, our thesis has been limited to an identification of major factors, rather than a detailed consideration of each one. Our analysis shows the process of course innovation and development in technical education to have been a highly complex interaction of forces in which the other aspects of the educational structure, including administrative as well as teach1ng institutions, played a vital role. Emphasis has been given to the influence of senior administrative officers within the local I education authority framework. Special mention has been made of the work of the Board of Education and of the limitations of the Board in tailing to establish definite guidelines for course development in technical education. Important factors outside the educational structure have also been considered, including the attitudes of parents and business management to formal technical training

    Abstract: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis has rapidly progressed from a research tool to a clinical application for the diagnosis and management of tuberculosis and in public health surveillance. This development has been facilitated by drastic drops in cost, advances in technology and concerted efforts to translate sequencing data into actionable information. There is, however, a risk that, in the absence of a consensus and international standards, the widespread use of WGS technology may result in data and processes that lack harmonization, comparability and validation. In this Review, we outline the current landscape of WGS pipelines and applications, and set out best practices for M. tuberculosis WGS, including standards for bioinformatics pipelines, curated repositories of resistance-causing variants, phylogenetic analyses, quality control and standardized reporting
