Therapeutic efficacy of a nutritional combination of N-3 PUFAS and Arctium lappa in canine atopic dermatitis
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of a diet containing Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (n-3 PUFAs) supplemented with the Arctium lappa (AL) plant (Fito Progres® ADULT Sensitive, Blaufelden Wiesenbach, Germany) on Canine Atopic Dermatitis (CAD). Twenty atopic dogs were fed a specifically prepared diet for 90 days and were then returned to their usual diet for another 90 days. A physiological and complete dermatological examination was conducted every 30 days. The examination of the dogs’ skin included an assessment of the Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index (CADESI) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pruritus based on owner-derived data. The results show a significant reduction (p<0.01) in the total CADESI score for the 1st 90 days of the trial (V90) compared to day 0 (V0; selection visit) and the same trend is also evident during the following 90 days. Therefore, the positive effect of the feed persisted for 90 days after the studied diet was suspended. Furthermore, the research shows a highly significant reduction (p<0.01) in pruritus during the period the dogs received the studied diet compared to V0 while the pruritus increased significantly in the second period of the trial (p<0.05) compared to V90. The number of dogs with pruritus decreased after 90 days of feeding with the formulated diet while it increased after the studied diet was suspended. The results of this study suggest that the studied diet could be a powerful tool in the management of CAD

Previous issue date: 2016-11-30Background: Along with increased longevity elderly are accompanied by diseases such as cognitive decline. Despite the increase in scientific research on cognitive aging, there are few adapted and validated for the American Latin countries. Thus, there is need for greater availability of valid instruments, reliable, standardized and standardized for use with the Brazilian population. Studies also show that education has a significant impact on cognitive performance, which may confound interpretation of the test results. It is noteworthy that low education with elderly performed worse on memory tests which can be seen in the ecological test and thus modify regulation standards is necessary because the test complements the traditional procedures of formal assessment of memory. The behavioral test Rivermead memory differs by being a functional and ecological test, widely used for memory assessment in aging may be of great value for the diagnosis and the use of formal cognitive batteries. Objective: Thus, these works has the main objective suggest normative data for the elderly, stratified by age and education to the Behavioral Test Rivermead Memory (RBMT) and evaluates the effect of these variables in a sample of elderly with preserved cognition, as well as comparatively analyze the results of normal and depressed elderly people with low education. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving a sample of 233 healthy elderly from a third-age group in Porto Alegre with an average age of 70 (SD 7.9) years and 10.7 (SD 4.8) years of education was carried out. The sample was stratified into the following age groups: 60-69 years, 70-79 years and > 80 years. The sample was also divided into individuals with < 8 years and ? 8 years of education. Pearson?s Chi-squared test and Spearman correlations were used. Results: The elderly participants with low educational level had worse performance on all sub-tests, except the Pictures, Messages, Belongings and Orientation. Older elderly performed worse for total RBMT score and on the Face Recognition, Immediate and Delayed Route, Messages and Belongings subtests (p ? 0.005). Conclusion: Mean scores for age and schooling were suggested in ecological tasks, which is an aspect to be taken into account in the context of the neuropsychological evaluation of cognitively normal elderly.
Ten simple rules for starting FAIR discussions in your community.
This work presents 10 rules that provide guidance and recommendations on how to start up discussions around the implementation of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles and creation of standardised ways of working. These recommendations will be particularly relevant if you are unsure where to start, who to involve, what the benefits and barriers of standardisation are, and if little work has been done in your discipline to standardise research workflows. When applied, these rules will support a more effective way of engaging the community with discussions on standardisation and practical implementation of the FAIR principles.Scholarly Communications and PublishingManagement SupportControl & Simulatio
Natural reason and God’s infinite power : diversity of approaches in the late 13th and 14th century commentaries on Averroes's De Substantia Orbis
The subject of this article is the Latin reception of Averroes’s treatise De substantia orbis, with special regard to the commentary practice in the late Middle Ages. Numerous philosophical problems were taken up in these commentaries following Averroes’s lead. The most controversial among them were these concerning divine attributes, i.e., infinite power, efficient and final causality, and, consequently, God’s ability to create out of nothing. Three different commentaries were therefore chosen to exemplify the key differences between the doctrinal approaches of the commentaries on the De substantia orbis. The first two of them - composed by Fernand of Spain and Maino de’ Maineri - represent the exegetic approach, adopting and developing Averroes’s ideas; the third commentary - composed by an anonymous author in Erfurt around 1362 - represents the critical approach referring to the questions raised in the De substantia orbis in order to propose orthodox solutions being far from these adopted in the treaty by Averroes himself. The article aims at scrutinizing the problems of infinite power of God and divine causality as they have been taken up by Latin philosophers from the late 13th to the second half of the 14th century by elucidating the key differences between the two lines of inquiry and highlighting the variety of approaches to Averroes’s De substantia orbis

The nature of optically dull active galactic nuclei in COSMOS
We present infrared, optical, and X-ray data of 48 X-ray bright, optically dull active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the COSMOS field. These objects exhibit the X-ray luminosity of an AGN but lack broad and narrow emission lines in their optical spectrum. We show that despite the lack of optical emission lines, most of these optically dull AGNs are not well described by a typical passive red galaxy spectrum: instead they exhibit weak but significant blue emission like an unobscured AGN. Photometric observations over several years additionally show significant variability in the blue emission of four optically dull AGNs. The nature of the blue and infrared emission suggest that the optically inactive appearance of these AGNs cannot be caused by obscuration intrinsic to the AGNs. Instead, up to ~70% of optically dull AGNs are diluted by their hosts, with bright or simply edge-on hosts lying preferentially within the spectroscopic aperture. The remaining ~30% of optically dull AGNs have anomalously high fX /fO ratios and are intrinsically weak, not obscured, in the optical. These optically dull AGNs are best described as a weakly accreting AGN with a truncated accretion disk from a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. Exploring the feasibility of ex-post harmonisation of religiosity items from the European Social Survey and the European Values Study
This paper examines the feasibility of ex-post harmonisation strategies using European Values Study (EVS) Wave 5 (2017–2020) and European Social Survey (ESS) Round 9 (2018–2019) data across 17 countries. The study shows an empirical assessment of the comparability of four items measuring religious behaviours (belonging to a religious denomination at present/in the past, religious services attendance, and praying), captured in both surveys. The novelty of this paper lies in the analytical comparison of religiosity indicators that are rarely assessed from a comparative perspective. The harmonisation strategy was based upon several analytical techniques that seek to determine similarities and differences between the selected items in terms of (a) their validity, by examining their correlations with a set of sociodemographic and substantive correlates, (b) their distributions, supplemented by visual comparisons and relevant statistical tests, and (c) item non-substantive shares. The findings pointed to the most consistency among the partial correlations, where individual religiosity produced the most differences between the surveys. Distributions produced the most discrepancies that also corresponded to less similarity across variable categories as gauged by Duncan’s index. This paper is descriptive and exploratory in its aim. It can be taken as a jumping-off point for future research where the time series of these two surveys, and potentially others, can be examined across aggregate levels (e.g. birth cohorts, countries)
