Modeling Routing Choices in Unidirectional Pedestrian Flows

In this work we present a simple routing model capable of capturing pedestrians path choices in the presence of a herding effect. The model is tested and validated against data from a large scale tracking campaign which we have conducted during the GLOW 2019 festival. The choice between alternative paths is modeled as an individual cost minimization procedure, with the cost function being associated to the (estimated) traveling time. In order to trigger herding effects the cost function is supplemented with a penalty term, modulated as a function of the fraction of pedestrians walking along each route. The model is shown to provide an accurate quantitative description of the decision process

Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here

Detecting a preformed pair phase: Response to a pairing forcing field

    No full text
The normal state of strongly coupled superconductors is characterized by the presence of “preformed” Cooper pairs well above the superconducting critical temperature. In this regime, the electrons are paired, but they lack the phase coherence necessary for superconductivity. The existence of preformed pairs implies the existence of a characteristic energy scale associated with a pseudogap. Preformed pairs are often invoked to interpret systems where some signatures of pairing are present without actual superconductivity, but an unambiguous theoretical characterization of a preformed-pair system is still lacking. To fill this gap, we consider the response to an external pairing field of an attractive Hubbard model, which hosts one of the cleanest realizations of a preformed pair phase, and a repulsive model where s-wave superconductivity cannot be realized. Using dynamical mean-field theory to study this response, we identify the characteristic features which distinguish the reaction of a preformed pair state from a normal metal without any precursor of pairing. The theoretical detection of preformed pairs is associated with the behavior of the second derivative of the order parameter with respect to the external field, as confirmed by analytic calculations in limiting cases. Our findings provide a solid test bed for the interpretation of state-of-the-art calculations for the normal state of the doped Hubbard model in terms of d-wave preformed pairs and, in perspective, of nonequilibrium experiments in high-temperature superconductors

Dynamical vertex approximation for the attractive Hubbard model

In this work, we adapt the formalism of the dynamical vertex approximation (DΓA), a diagrammatic approach including many-body correlations beyond the dynamical mean-field theory, to the case of attractive on-site interactions. We start by exploiting the ladder approximation of the DΓA scheme, in order to derive the corresponding equations for the nonlocal self-energy and vertex functions of the attractive Hubbard model. Second, we prove the validity of our derivation by showing that the results obtained in the particle-hole symmetric case fully preserve the exact mapping between the attractive and the repulsive models. It will be shown how this property can be related to the structure of the ladders, which makes our derivation applicable for any approximation scheme based on ladder diagrams. Finally, we apply our DΓA algorithm to the attractive Hubbard model in three dimensions, for different fillings and interaction values. Specifically, we focus on the parameters region in the proximity of the second-order transition to the superconducting and charge-density wave phases, respectively, and calculate (i) their phase-diagrams, (ii) their critical behavior, as well as (iii) the effects of the strong nonlocal correlations on the single-particle properties

La maturità di Alessandro Fei del Barbiere, in bilico tra Maniera e Riforma

This article studies the mature career of the Florentine painter Alessandro Fei del Barbiere (1537-1592), beginning with the rediscovery of the 'Ascension' altarpiece formerly in the Albizi Chapel in the destroyed church of San Pier Maggiore, Florence. Studying this painting and others recorded in 1584 by the biographer Raffaello Borghini, such as the two altarpieces for Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Madonna dell'Umiltà in Pistoia, the author reconstructs a body of works showing how in the 1580s Fei gradually went beyond the archaic style of his apprenticeship - he had been trained by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Pierfrancesco Foschi, but was also marked by the Maniera of Vasari - evolving towards naturalism in both mimesis and pictorial handling. In Florence, his development partly parallels that of Santi di Tito and his circle, but Fei was also influenced by a probable sojourn during the early part of that decade in Rome, where he could have been inspired by Girolamo Muziano and the painters working for Pope Gregory XIII. Among other proposals, the author suggests that the artist was responsible for decorating the chancel of Fiesole Cathedral (c. 1584-1589), which consisted of an altarpiece, only rarely discussed by scholars, and a cycle of frescoes hitherto attributed to Nicodemo Ferrucci

Tra socialdemocrazie e Perestrojka. Le relazioni internazionali del Pci attraverso le carte di Alessandro Natta

This essay reconstructs the foreign policy of the Italian Communist Party during the four years of Alessandro Natta’s secretariat (1984-1988) through largely original archival documentation, from the Alessandro Natta Fonds of the Historical Archive of the Chamber of Deputies. Natta’s papers are also cross-referenced with those kept in the PCI Archive at the Gramsci Foundation. The author analyses the relationship that the PCI establishes with Gorbachev’s Perestroika, Deng’s China, and European social democracies during the last years of the Cold War

Fermi and Luttinger Arcs: Two concepts, Realized on One Surface

    No full text
I will present [1] an analytically solvable model for correlated electrons, which is able to capture the major Fermi surface modifications occurring in both hole- and electron-doped cuprates as a function of doping. The proposed Hamiltonian, which represents an extension of the Hatsugai-Kohmoto model [2], qualitatively reproduces the results of numerically demanding many-body calculations, here obtained [1] using the dynamical vertex approximation in its ladder implementation [3]. Our analytical theory provides a transparent description of a precise mechanism, capable of driving the formation of disconnected segments along the Fermi surface (the highly debated “Fermi arcs”), as well as the opening of a pseudogap in hole and electron doping. This occurs through a specific mechanism: The electronic states on the Fermi arcs remain intact, while the Fermi surface part where the gap opens transforms into a Luttinger arc. === References === [1] P.
