Does teacher certification in mathematics improve high school special education students' performance on the High School Proficiency Assessment?: a preliminary investigation

    No full text
This prelimary investigation examined the impact of teacher mathematics certification on high school special education students’ scores on the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) in an urban public school setting. The sample included 76 eleventh grade students classified as special education under IDEA. The student sample represented 70% of males and 30% of females from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds. Five teachers federally classified as highly qualified were included. Out of the teacher sample, four held state certifications in mathematics and one was not certified. Research questions and hypotheses were examined using inferential statistical tests (2-sample t-tests) and effect sizes. Results indicated that special education students who were taught by HQTs certified in mathematics scored significantly better on the Mathematics section of the HSPA than special education students who were taught by HQTs non-certified mathematics teachers. Effect sizes indicated small practical and meaningful differences. Results are outlined and directions for future research are discussed.Psy.DIncludes bibliographical referencesby Maria Angela Staropol

Follow-up of a Cementless Stem in Total Hip Arthroplasty with Proximal Spongy Metal Surface

The purpose of total hip arthroplasty is to regain a biomechanical and painfree functioning of the joint to ensure or improve the quality of life. This is thought to be obtained by permanent bony in-growth of a prosthesis. In this study the G2 stem by ESKA Implants was investigated. This is a cementless spongy metal prosthesis with a tridimensional porous coating grid that is limited to the proximal two thirds of the stem and thus allows proximal inducement of loading stress. The retrospective study aimed to investigate survival rates as well as functional results. 77 patients were followed-up at a mean of 7.8 years after total hip replacement. We report very good functional results and excellent survival rates

Gli avvenimenti storici come rivelazione L’incipit della Legatio ad Caium di filone di Alessandria

In the incipit of Legatio ad Caium of Philo of Alexandria anthropological and theological concepts are expressed which do not appear immediately relevant to the story: the narration of dramatic historical circumstances which the author personally lived through. The analysis of the specific contents reveals the connection betwen fundamental religious and cultural themes which are reoccurring themes in the various works of Philo. The introduction does not place ideology a priori but his considerations are evidence of a method of judgement of historical events

    Materia-autore = Author-Matter

The etymology of the word author refers to an act of creation, an act of augmentation, from the Latin verb augere. Author instantiates creation, the expansion of the pre-existing. In 1967 Roland Barthes declared the death of the author in his famous essay to state once more that the crisis is that of the author as a single subjectivity and as a term that condenses prestige, undermined by the de-subjectivation strategies of automatism, fortuity and fragmentation of the historical avant-gardes, as well as by the machinic act and by the reproducibility of the second avant-gardes. Fifty years after Barthes’ paradigmatic formula, this lack of authorship appears to be a successful brand. The ten- sions between the anomie of matter, the law that establishes authorship and the economy that makes the work pos- sible, invoke discordant perspectives. Artists make the self-destruction of their work the real work, and appeal is made for the demolition of architectures, whether by a recognised author or not, in order to re-design, or better still, re-claim the territory. Artificial intelligence consolidates its logics and its design by progressively shedding human ingenuity. The space of criticism becomes, finally, increasingly ephemeral. However, there is an acceptation of criti- cism that is, rather than an individual ‘signature’, an exploration and explanation of how design makes theory. The binomial author-matter seeks to mark these tensions and contradictions: the featured term author is main- tained to underline the persistence of that prestigious subjectivity, at the very moment when the rhetoric of “mat- ter as an author” promises other forms of authorship
